Chapter Sixteen: Fitz

Once Sophie and I are downstairs, the two of us are met by the Sovereigns and the Altruistics. When both of us step out, I ask, "Um, what are you four doing down here?"

Donovan merely scoffs before saying, "Wallace was being a pain in the neck about us not being here. So here we are." The male Sovereign crosses his arms over his torso before looking over at the conference room doors, which are still closed.

Sighing, I look over at Benen. "Do you have a better explanation?" I inquire, raising an eyebrow.

Smirking slightly, Benen says, "We were all in our own rooms, but Mr. Wallace's voice entered our minds and told us to go downstairs."

"Benen and I came down first, but Audrey and Donovan ignored it," Laurel adds. "But being a sweetheart, Benen went up to get them!" the female Altruistic adds before kissing Benen on the nose, much to the Sovereigns' distaste.

Nodding, Sophie says, "Awww! That's adorable!" Audrey gags out of the corner of my eye as the female Percipient smiles at the two lovers.

Smirking at this, I transmit to her, You know that you're reaction to the two Altruistics will always be hilarious?

Sophie pouts at me, a smile struggling to appear on her face. I'm surprised you haven't done this before with Benen yet, she replies, finally smiling. Girls can't be the only ones who do this.

I laugh out loud. Sure they don't, I say sarcastically, raising my eyebrows at her.

Donovan suddenly clears his throat. "Uh, guys?" he says, earning our attention. Once we all look at him, he points to his head and says, "Wallace's voice entered my mind again. He says to go..." He pauses, pointing at the now open conference room doors. "...in there."

I narrow my eyes at where Donovan's pointing. "How and when did it open?" I ask.

"Wasn't it closed just moments before?" the female Percipient adds.

Audrey nods. "That's what I remember," she agrees.

Laurel's eyes widen. "Is that because of Mr. Wallace that it's open?" she questions. The five of us look at one another before shrugging. Honestly, we didn't have a clue, but it doesn't seem like someone else would. Looking at each other, we hesitantly go inside the conference room.

Inside, the familiar table that the six of us sit at was pushed off to the side again. A large glass cylinder towers over us, causing us to either tense up or back away slightly. We suddenly turn around when the creaking sound of a door closing sounds behind us.

"You all took such a long time to come here," Mr. Wallace says. Walking over to us slowly, he tsks under his breath. "We could've gotten over with this earlier, but some decided to ignore my transmission," he explains, raising an unamused eyebrow in the Sovereigns' direction.

Sophie raises an eyebrow. "This?" she asks. "What do you mean?"

"And what is that?" I ask, pointing at the large cylinder in the middle of the room. Its tall figure practically emitted dread.

"That's actually a scanner." Mr. Wallace walks over to it and opens the front door. "I need to scan all of your memories," he explains vaguely.

Before either Sophie or I can ask, the Altruistics and Sovereigns ask, "Why?"

"Some memories are being developed inside your minds, and others are diminishing, which results in forgetfulness of that event," Mr. Wallace clarifies. "I was originally going to do this with just Sophie and Fitz, since they have the telepathic abilities." Looking at the other four, he adds, "I then remembered how you four were also a part of their memories, and that may result in some developing memories of your own."

Laurel and Benen still have confused expressions, but they nod in comprehension nevertheless. Audrey and Donovan, however, share my same opinions and frown. "That doesn't really make sense," Audrey states while Donovan nods in agreement. "Why the heck do we need to do this in the first place?"

"They're freaking memories," Donovan sneers, narrowing his eyes at the grey-haired man. "They don't do anything."

Practically growling in annoyance and irritation, Mr. Wallace brings out a computer. "If you guys are so persistent with an explanation, we'll just have Sophie go first."

"What?!" Sophie says, backing away. "Why me? And that isn't an explanation!"

I glare at Mr. Wallace before stepping between them. "Why her?" I ask when he doesn't answer Sophie. Before I know it, I'm transmitting to him, If you do anything to her, I swear to God that your face will be slammed against the ceiling in a matter of seconds.

Diverting his gaze from my death glare, Mr. Wallace just takes Sophie by the arm and drags her over to the scanner. "It won't hurt," he says. "And it'll only take a few seconds."

When the female Percipient looks over at me, I sigh and say begrudgingly, "It'll be okay. And we're right here if you need us." I then silently tap my right temple, quietly telling her that she can also transmit to me if she needs to. Smiling softly, Sophie nods understandingly before she enters the scanner, the glass door closing behind her.

"Just stand there and don't touch the glass," Mr. Wallace instructs strictly before looking at the computer screen again. "The actual glass has the memory sensors, so we can't have anyone tamper with that. Got it?"

Her eyes wide, Sophie nods and stands straight, her tenseness clear. The inside of the scanner glows a bright green, causing Sophie to tense up more and pale slightly.

Noticing this, I step near the scanner and say, Don't worry- I think that's just the scanner actually scanning your memories now. It'll be over soon, so...

Suddenly, the green light fades away, and the glass scanner's door opens again. Running over to us, the female Percipient says, "I do not want to do that again. Ever."

I laugh quietly with Sophie as Laurel enters the glass cylinder. The female Altruistic gives Benen a shaky smile before the door closes. And just like it did with Sophie, the glass cylinder glows a green light before Laurel's let out again.

The same thing occurs with Benen, Audrey, and Donovan. The scanner flashes green for every one of them as well.

Before I know it, it's my turn to go into the glass cylinder. Although I said that it'd be alright to Sophie, I instinctively tense up as I slowly make my way to the scanner. The back of my mind tells me to run out the doors- that something's going to happen- but I force myself to ignore that voice.

As if reading my mind, since he technically can, Mr. Wallace says, "I'll shut the door once you're inside. It'll only take a few minutes-" But before I can object to anything, the door closes.

Even though her voice is muffled, I can faintly hear Sophie yell, "Minutes?! You said seconds!" The female Percipient then meets my gaze before storming over to me, irritation and determination prominent in her eyes.

Before she can reach for the door, Mr. Wallace suddenly yells out, "Sophie Elizabeth Foster, you better step away from that door if you know what's best for you!"

Clearly taken aback, the female Percipient stumbles back, her eyes as wide as a deer in headlights.

Tempted to test out my theory of using telekinesis while being confined in a glass cylinder, I manage to push down my irrational anger. Instead, I transmit to Sophie, I'll be alright. Maybe he just needs to check on my memories because of last year...

...if you say so, Sophie replies meekly before stepping back, her concerned expression hard to look away from. I try to comfort her by smiling softly, which earns me a smile in return.

"Just get it over with," I angrily tell the middle aged man, scowling at him. I raise my eyebrows when my previous statement echoes back to me because of the surrounding panels of glass.

Nodding, Mr. Wallace furiously types into the computer. As I stare at him, I wait for a green light to glow for the sixth time.

Instead, the scanner glows a yellow.

"Huh, it's not green," Benen states, making me frown.

Donovan facepalms himself. "No kidding, Sherlock. And here I was, thinking it was blue."

"What does that mean?" Sophie asks, ignoring the bickering Sovereign and Altruistic. She skeptically takes a step forward. "It glowed a green for us..." Her voice trails off, looking at me.

"It doesn't mean anything bad..." Mr. Wallace says, his voice muffled from the glass. I watch with slightly wide eyes as the middle aged man types a bit more into the computer.

But he suddenly stops when the scanner changes to a red glow.

Cursing loudly, Mr. Wallace seems as if he wants to break the computer to pieces of metal. "But that is," I manage to hear him say before he starts to type into the computer furiously again.

"What's happening?!" I shout, forcing myself to not touch the glass. "It's red!"

"Donovan-try to open the door!" Mr. Wallace shouts, not looking away. I suddenly realize that Donovan's already trying to pry the door ajar.

"Fitz!" Sophie manages to shout, too shocked to move. She watches with a pale face as Benen rushes over to help the male Sovereign as well.

"Screw it," I mutter under my breath before slamming my shoulder into the glass door in front of me. Sensors are going down today, I think bitterly to myself as I try to help from inside the glass cylinder. "Mr. Wallace, what's going on with this scanner?!" I shout, trying to pry it open by using my telekinesis to push myself into the door with more strength.

"I don't know!" I hear him say almost instantly.

Growling in frustration, I step back. Sighing deeply, I look around the glass cylinder, not that there's much to see anyways. Suddenly, I hear a hissing sound. Frowning, I look up and walk around in a circle, trying to find out where the hissing noise is coming from.

Suddenly, a dark grey mist enters the glass cylinder from the bottom of the scanner. "What the..?" I mutter as the mist travels up my legs and surrounds me. The mist burns my eyes and makes my throat close up. "What- is- this?!" I choke out between wheezing coughs.

"Open the door!" I hear Sophie shout. With burning eyes, I look up to see the entire glass cylinder floating a few feet off of the ground, along with the male Sovereign and Altruistic. "What's that grey mist?!" she yells out.

"Sophie-" I'm suddenly cut off with a choking fit. I stumble forward, propping my arms against the closed glass door. Put us down... I transmit, my brain feeling strained. I don't want anyone to get hurt.

"Open!" she shouts, pointing two fingers at the door. I feel something trying to tug the door open, which I assume to be Sophie using her telekinesis. Why isn't it opening..? Sophie asks softly. Letting everything that she was levitating touch the ground softly, she turns to Mr. Wallace, who's still typing into the computer. "What's happening, Mr. Wallace?! Why isn't he coming out?!"

I can't hear what Mr. Wallace's saying over my coughing. I don't realize that I'm leaning against a side of the glass cylinder until I hear Donovan shout, "Why isn't it opening?!"

"I don't know!" Benen yells, trying to pry the door open again.

Laurel comforts Sophie as Audrey comes over to help with the door. "Dang- it really can't open!" she comments, cursing under her breath.

"What- you thought we were faking this?!" Donovan says, glaring at the female Sovereign.

"Who cares?!" Benen, Laurel, and Sophie shout at the same time, startling me into standing up straight up again. The five look at me as I trip over my own feet, slamming my back into the back wall of the glass scanner.

Groaning, I struggle to stand up. The grey mist burns my eyes so much that I can't see anything but grey. "Help me," I breathe out, coughing one last time before my eyes roll into my head. I feel my legs crumbling beneath me, my head hitting the glass as I collapse.

The last thing I remember hearing is a scream.
