Chapter Twenty-Two: Fitz

I wake to feel a sweet liquid go down my throat. Gagging when the bitter aftertaste burns at the back of my mouth, I sit myself up to see Steven and Caroline smile happily at me. When they rush over to give me an embrace, I realize that my head and arm as healed completely. I can't help but wonder what they did to heal all of those completely, since I don't think that I was out for a few weeks or anything.

Steven smiles at me. "Do you feel any pain?" he asks me as I swing my feet over the table. "Like, a headache or stinging of any wounds we might've missed?"

I look at my arm and make sure that there isn't a wound at all. I then put my hand to the back of my head in search for any pain. Sighing in relief when I won't feel any waves of pain, I look at the pathologist and chemist again. "I don't feel any pain," I say. "But what was that liquid that I swallowed?"

"It was a remedy for a headache that you would've gotten," Caroline says with a gentle grin. "You did talk with Sophie telepathically for what- a few hours?"

Remembering our long conversation, I can't help but blush faintly at Caroline's smile. "Wait- how long was I out for?" I ask.

Steven frowns. He looks at his watch. "You passed out when it was about 1:30 when you passed out," he mumbles. "And it's now 3:56 in the afternoon, so..."

"I was knocked out for fourteen hours?!" I sputter, my eyes widening considerably..

Caroline nods nonchalantly. "Almost fourteen and a half," she corrects.

I frown. "Where's Fitton? And everyone else?" My eyes widen as I ask, "Is Fitton still here?!"

Before Caroline or Steven can answer, Mr. Wallace rushes into the room. "Is he-" Mr. Wallace begins, but he cuts himself off when he sees me. "Oh- you're awake now. Good."

Raising an eyebrow, I ask, "Where is everyone?"

"In the conference room," Mr. Wallace says. "They're searching up Fitton Galster, since he was supposed to be dead three years ago." I can't help but raise an eyebrow at the venom that seeped into the last few words.

Pretending that Mr. Wallace just replied normally, I ask, "Is he still here?"

Mr. Wallace shakes his head. "He disappeared before you passed out, remember?"

I frown, not remembering it. "He did?" I ask. "Well, I don't remember that part."

Nodding, Mr. Wallace says, "Why don't you change? You're still in your pajamas, and it's-" Mr. Wallace check his watch. "4:13 now."

Thanking the pathologist and chemist, I leave the room and head up to my room. I then go into the bathroom to take a shower since my head might have blood on it still. After I dry my hair, I get some grey jeans and wear a collared, dark blue shirt. I'm about to leave the room when I remember my mental note.

Wheeling around on my heel, I open my desk drawer and grab out prostrator. Thankful that the prostrator is the perfect size for my hand, I then tuck the box of tzanion ammunition in my back pocket. Grabbing my key card, I actually exit my room and head towards the conference room.

In the elevator, I transmit to Sophie, Are you there?

Fitz? Fitz! Are you awake yet?

For some reason, I nod, even though I'm in the elevator alone. Yeah, I woke up about fifteen minutes ago..? All of my injuries have healed- it's weird.

I kind of got used to it, Sophie says. But you're right it's weird. Oh- before I forget, Fitz, remember your prostrator?

Yeah... I say slowly, hoping that she catches my confusion. I'm bringing it with me now, by the way. Just in case.

Really? Because that's what Mr. Wallace also wanted you to do! Sophie says. That's even weirder...

I furrow my eyebrows as I step out of the elevator. Why did he say that?

Um... I think that I should probably explain it to you in person, Sophie transmits to me.

Before I open the conference room door, I ask, Do you want to talk about it alone or does it not matter?

Well, Mr. Wallace made it seem like it should've been kept quiet, so I think talking alone would be better, Sophie admits. But... be warned, I told everyone that you're coming here,. Laurel and Benen are planning a sleepover, but they're not the ones who asked for it this time.

Then who did? I ask as I step inside the conference room. Once there, everyone suddenly stops in their place and turns toward me. "Fitz!" they all shout.

My eyes widen at the sudden outburst. I'm about to say something when some wraps their arms my neck tightly. After taking a second to recognize the familiar blond hair of Sophie, I wrap my arms around her to return her embrace. "Did you sleep?" I whisper in her ear.

"Well," Sophie draws out the word, making my eyes flash with concern when we pull away slightly. When she sees this, the female Percipient giggles with sympathy before hugging me again. "Don't worry, I slept well. I just woke up late- near eleven in the morning."

I can't help but chuckle at this. "You did go to sleep at about three in the morning," I point out, earning some laughter from Sophie. Still hugging her, I glance up to see two swooning Altruistics and two gagging Sovereigns. Chuckling more, I whisper to her, "You know that you and I are going to have to deal with a lot of questions from the Altruistics, right?"

When we pull away, Sophie rolls her eyes. "Unfortunately," she comments, making me chuckle. "Especially at the sleepover."

My eyes widen as I look at her. "By the way, who wanted-" I suddenly stop myself when I come to the realization in my head. Momentarily glancing over at the Sovereigns, I whisper, "No. Way."

Sophie scoffs, "You should've seen how I reacted. I actually felt Audrey's forehead and asked if she was sick or anything of the sort."

I look into Sophie's brown eyes before bursting into a fit of laughter. Sophie pouts dramatically at me before joining in on my laughter. Almost having to wipe a tear away, I stare at the now confused Sovereigns and say, "If only I had a camera..."

Sophie laughs more. "Don't worry, Laurel and Benen came prepared!"

...

This time, we'd decided to have the sleepover for the boys in my room and Sophie's room for the girls. This time, Benen and Donovan were the ones who had to bring some blankets and a pillow from their rooms. Once we settled in, I look at the two of them. "What did I miss?" I ask as I discreetly tuck my prostrator and extra tzanion underneath my pillow.

Donovan groans. "Do you really have to talk about that now?" he asks, groaning even more obnoxiously.

Benen shakes his head. "You didn't miss much," he admits. "We tried to look up Fitton Galster, but it's like he died three years ago!"

"Just like his 'death' certificate states," I mutter, rolling my eyes.

Before Benen can anything else, though, Donovan perks up. "We need to talk about things teenagers talk about!"

I raise an eyebrow skeptically as Benen asks, "So what do we talk about?"

Instead of verbally answering, Donovan smirks mischievously and makes eye contact with both Benen and me. His smirk only grows more when I feel my face warming at only one possibility for a topic. "Donovan," I try to say in a warning tone, my reddening cheeks contradicting my voice.

Donovan merely snickers. "So... who volunteers?" When both of us have confusion written across our faces, he laughs more, "Don't worry! I'm going to make Benen go first anyways!"

I can't help but sigh in relief. Benen, on the other hand, looks like he was just chosen for the Hunger Games. "Why me?!" he asks. The male Altruistic and I exchange one glance. If this were the Hunger Games, then Benen is about to die.

Donovan smirks. "First question, why did you kiss her?" he asks, holding his chin up with his fist to make himself look curious.

Benen blushes. "Well, she's really kind and so happy and she really makes the whole room light up and she's so loving and she's-" Benen realizes that he's rambling and places a hand over his mouth.

"What else?" Donovan asks. "Come on- tell me!"

He shakes his head. "You heard enough," Benen says, his face practically crimson.

Sighing in defeat, Donovan turns to me. "Now you!"

Blushing, I jump up. "Um, I'll pass," I stammer. "Thanks for the offer, though."

Donovan rolls his eyes. "Come on- it's your turn!"

And right then and there, I feel like I'm in a room with two Benens instead of one. Thinking quickly, I ask, "What about you and Audrey? How's she?"

Benen snickers. "Oh yeah! I want to hear about that!" He's about to say more, but Donovan throws his pillow squarely at his face. Benen chucks his pillow at Donovan, and two engage in a ruthless pillow fight.

Grateful that I'm not a part of this, I transmit to Sophie, How are things going on your side?

Let's see, Sophie says sarcastically, making me smirk. Laurel's been prodding me about earlier today, and Audrey decided to join in. That is, until I shifted the attention on her and Donovan. So now they're talking about that.

I chuckle out loud. Donovan got Benen to ramble on about Laurel for a bit, I admit. And he was beginning to hone in on me when I brought up him and Audrey. Benen wanted to hear that, and Donovan threw a pillow at him. They're in a rather painful pillow fight right now.

Boys...

I scoff. More like "girls..."

Ha- as if! Sophie says, making me smirk.

Care to vouch for that, Sophie? I ask sarcastically. When I don't hear a reply, I assume that I'm victorious. Also, do you think you can slip away and come to my room? So we can talk about Fitton?

I don't know, but why don't you come and get me so I won't have to make up a rather lousy excuse? Sophie asks. I think the torment we'll most likely receive will be better than the teasing we'd get if we sneak out.

Before opening the door, I can't help but laugh. True. And where do you want to go so the others won't hear us- hallway or balcony?

I think some fresh air would be nice. How about the balcony?

Fine by me. When I open the connecting door, all three girls look at me. Smirking slightly, I point to Sophie and ask, "Do you mind if I take her away for a bit? If that's alright with you."

Laurel replies with a squeal and Audrey can't help but smile. Both of them look at Sophie as she gets up and walks towards me. God, this feels awkward, she transmits to me.

I nod as well. "Thanks, I'll promise to not take too much time away from your sleepover," I say to the two of them.

Audrey scoffs, "Wow. He hasn't even taken her away and he's already taken her breath away." The two girls then laugh when Sophie and I begin to blush madly.

Not trusting my voice, I silently lead the way to my room's balcony for a rather needed explanation.
