Chapter Twenty-Three: Sophie
Where should I begin? I ask myself as I gather up everything that I should tell him. Finally thinking that I've assorted my words correctly, I look up into Fitz's teal eyes, which seem at least two shades darker due to the lack of light, other than his room's lights. "Well, I was heading to go to my room," I begin, "But Mr. Wallace stopped me."
Fitz raises an eyebrow. "Why?" he asks. "Was it about Fitton?"
I tilt my head to show that it was partially about him. "Well, it was mostly about you," I admit. "He said that he knows how you used a prostrator to save me-"
"Wait- how would he know about that?" Fitz asks. "He wasn't inside the warehouse at all."
I frown. "That's weird..." I muse. "Did you somehow tell him about how you still have the prostrator?" I ask him after a moment of thinking.
Fitz shakes his head. "Not at all," he says.
I furrow my eyebrows at all of this. "And he was saying how it was very intelligent of you to use the tzanion back at Fitton," I continue. "And that you must be very powerful since only a few people can still stay conscious from tzanion really small like that, and Fitton blacked out for a few seconds. Mr. Wallace didn't seem to care at the memory about the tzanion belonged to you completely."
The male Percipient sighs. "I'm guessing he said even more than that?" he asks, sighing again when I nod. Running a hand through his hair, Fitz asks, "What else did he say?"
"He said that it was a good thing that you didn't use your prostrator when you were fighting with Fitton," I explain. "And he said that he needed to tell you that you need to carry your prostrator with you from now on."
"Did he technically say that it was a good thing that I didn't have the prostrator?" Fitz asks.
I shrug. "I actually asked the same thing," I admit. "But Mr. Wallace said that if you did, then Fitton would've done something to you because he'd be under the impression that you were that prepared."
"Did he mention what specifically?" Fitz asks.
I shrug again. "Not that I know of," I say. "But he also said that Fitton now views you as more advanced than he had originally predicted. And that both of us 'show more power' than he would've guessed."
Fitz furrows his eyebrows, his lips weighing into a scowl. "Now I can't help but wonder what he would've done, and how Mr. Wallace could tell."
I shrug. I think of Jacob again and shudder involuntarily before I can stop myself. Thank God that you didn't bring the prostrator, I think gratefully. Who knows what could've happened?
I don't know, but there isn't a need to worry about that now, Fitz transmits to me. Startled, I remind myself to not transmit my thoughts to Fitz by accident.
I can't help but roll my eyes at his reply, There is a need to worry about that, even now. Who knows, maybe he'll use whatever he didn't use on you now another day.
Fitz steps closer. His teal eyes, now darker from the night, gazes at me so intensely that my breathing hitches in my throat. I feel my cheeks warm and become very grateful for the lack of decent lighting. Even if he does attack any of us another day, that also gives us the chance to show him what we all can do to protect ourselves, he argues, his eyes never leaving me.
We shouldn't underestimate him, I transmit unsurely. I try to stare at anything other than Fitz's gaze, but still stare at him.
The male Percipient raises an eyebrow at me. We shouldn't overestimate him either, he argues, making a valid contradiction. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be practicing our abilities, since we need to know more than ever. But what happened can't be changed now, so we shouldn't be worrying about different possibilities on what could've happened.
I sigh, But I can't help it. I can't stop worrying about what he could've done to you- Even though I transmitted the last thought to him, I clap a hand over my mouth to stop myself. Now blushing furiously, I finally look away from Fitz's charming gaze.
Sophie... I glance up so stare at the ground between us, so Fitz gently uses his hand to tilt my head up so I'm staring into his eyes again. I can tell that you don't want Fitton to do something that would be similar to what Jacob did. Before I can transmit anything back to him, Fitz adds, It's in your eyes. You don't have to say it- I just have to look into your brown eyes.
I swallow nervously, my eyes widening at the last. I immediately become self-conscious on what my eyes showed him. I've been worrying about that since Mr. Wallace told me that, I admit. You freaked me out pretty badly when you collapsed the first time. The second time was worse...
Fitz sighs before slowly dropping his hand to the side. My fingers must've brushed against my injury, and I must've not woken up after that, he says.
I nod in agreement. And all the bruises that covered you... What happened, Fitz?
Fitton must've bumped into something because he couldn't see in the dark, Fitz explains. So I woke up to a loud thud and someone cursing. Donovan would've called my name out, and Benen doesn't curse. And on top of that, they don't have another copy of my key card. I honestly wasn't thinking about grabbing my prostrator- I dashed to the door so I could turn the lights after the possibility of it being Fitton entered my mind.
And..? I press on.
Well, I was right, for starters, Fitz continues. We then continue fighting, and you join the fight. I sent you to go get someone partially because we needed more than one person fighting against him, and partially because I didn't want him to attack you so I wouldn't besiege him.
I nod in comprehension. And I'm guessing that he ran out the door?
Exactly, Fitz confirms. Then you found us on the ground floor. Did you track my thoughts or something?
Actually, process of elimination, I admit. We actually stopped at our floor, but when it was eerily quiet, I thought that you two would be down there instead. The actual truth would be that I was so worried that I didn't even think about tracking his thoughts, but that's technically a variation of the truth.
By the way, what happened when Fitton disappeared?
I frown. Did you forget what happened?
"Apparently," he says out loud, shrugging.
"Well, Fitton just disappeared- no smoke, no cover-up of any kind. Just... vanished," I say from the lack of a better word. "But he left the piece of tzanion behind."
"And we communicated telepathically for a while," Fitz finishes. A smile dances across my features at the fact that he remembered that specific memory.
After a few moments of silence pass between us, I suddenly remember Mr. Wallace's comment about Fitton before he talked to me about Fitz. "By the way," I interject, causing Fitz to look into my eyes. Swallowing, I say, "Mr. Wallace commented on how Fitton was supposed to be dead, emphasizing on how he was believed to have died three years ago."
Fitz frowns. "That... sounds pretty suspicious," he mumbles. "Did Fitton have any connections to Mr. Wallace or anyone else?"
At the mention of any possible relationships, I frown more. "Well, there's that ex-girlfriend," I begin. "But that's all we found so far."
I don't hear Benen or Donovan having their pillow fight anymore, Fitz transmits to me, making my eyes widen in surprise. So I'm going to transmit to you again.
I nod. I want to question her, but...
But you don't want her to possibly die? Fitz finishes. He nods in agreement, Neither do I, so browsing it is. We can look at it tomorrow. For now- He points inside. We have some sleepovers to attend.
I chuckle slightly, a smile playing with my lips. Fitz then opens the balcony door and steps aside so I can go inside first. Smiling gratefully at him, I walk into him room and see the two Altruistics and Sovereigns sitting together in a circle on the ground. Fitz closes the door behind him and asks, "Should I ask what you four are surrounding right now?"
Laurel groans. "Sophie!" she whines. "You two were supposed to kiss..!"
Smirking when Fitz and I turn the shade of a ruby, Audrey sarcastically snaps her fingers in disappointment. "Oh darn," she says, sarcasm very evident in her voice. "The two nerds didn't get to kiss."
The female Altruistic, not noticing the sarcasm, turns to the female Sovereign. "I know, right?!" she asks, looking confused when Audrey facepalms herself before groaning.
Sighing, Audrey grabs both Laurel and my hand and drags us through the connecting door. "Now let's continue the sleepover!" Audrey declares.
(A/N): This part will have a lot of nerdy science puns since those are right up my domain (Yes, that's a math pun that I just made. You're welcome). I somehow found a place to use puns in this, which was not planned at all, I swear. If you guys have any science puns, comment them down below! Science ones are absolutely hilarious!
Oh great, I tell Fitz. Help me, fellow nerd. Come to the nerd side.
I hear Fitz chuckling before he transmits, No thank you. I'll just subtract myself from that equation.
I giggle as I sit down. Oh my god, you really are a nerd.
Fitz scoffs behind me. Oh yeah? Then what are you?
I then decide to let my inner nerd shine through and say, I'm science, since I'm full of all of the solutions. I turn around to see Fitz smirking at me. Raising an eyebrow, I smirk victoriously.
Well played, Sophie Foster. Well played, Fitz transmits, making me smirk more. But to be honest, I may be science nerd, but only periodically.
I break out in a small fit of giggles, earning a curious look from Laurel and Audrey. Dang it, I thought I'd get the last pun.
Fitz laughs, As if.
I can tell, I retort. We both then look at each other and burst laughing.
