Short Story (Based on 'My Sad Face')
Each lesson we are to read a short story, and then do a task based on it. This Short story is based on 'My Sad Face'.
Prompt: Write a story set in another country where things have been taken to the extremes in a similar way.
I walked down Mainstreet, hoping not to be caught. To be honest this is probably the worst idea I've ever had. There is no way they are going to believe my story, but I have to try. I need to get away from this boring life. The same routine every, single, day. Get up, have breakfast, go to school, go to class, go home, do homework, go out for a walk, be home before dark. Right now, I am breaking at least one law, and that one will soon be two. Rule One : Be home before dark. Rule 2: Do not leave the dome.
I walk down the footpath, being careful to be quiet. No one knows why we can't stay out after dark, but for me, it's the best time to get away. To leave the dome. To leave my home. To find a place where I can do what I want, when I want to. I just have to make it outside the dome without being caught. I hurry my pace, walking quickly down the mainroad. I have to walk on this road, there is no other way across the bridge. It's this, or people's backyards. At least if I had of done that, I wouldn't have to worry about this horrible creature my teacher calls a dog. Apparently before the war, people would have these dog animals as pets. Even though I wouldn't have to worry about dogs, every house has a super high tech alarm system. It's required by the law.
The law is what I am running from. The law which forces me to be home before dark. The law I am breaking right now, as we speak. I cross the last stretch of road and enter an alleyway. From here, it's about a five minute walk to the edge of the dome. To the doorway to freedom. I swing my dark green, camo backpack from my left shoulder to my right as I reach the end of the alleyway.I glance out quickly, and just as fast duck down flat against the wall. I keep still as a police hover car floats by slowly. When the coast is clear, I dart across the street.
This happens more and more frequently as I get closer and closer to the edge of the dome. What are they looking for? I'm the only person in the whole dome who isn't brainwashed enough to be content with the life I'm living. The life I was living. From now on, my life is never going to be the same. Even if I somehow manage to reach the door of the dome, I'd still have to get out without being caught, and make my way to the Rebels, if they even exist.
Apparently the Rebels are a group of people.. Well, rebelling against the Dome Mayor and the Dome itself. I've never been outside the dome. No one has. Supposedly they are out there to destroy the dome, and to make life the way it was before the Reset. Before we were cooped up in a dome. The Mayor says that the dome is to keep people out. I know better. It's to keep us in.
I look both ways before I cross the street at a run, then dart down another alley and continue on my path to freedom.
