Over the next few days, there is always one boy in the house with me. They drop me off at work, certain that she won't bother me there. I do not know if they are right. She has bothered me there before. However, the boys say she wouldn't hurt me in broad daylight, where people are around to witness.
The days are sunny though I am gloomy. The boys are right though; she doesn't show up to my job at the diner. I get my first paycheck, cash under the table. While it isn't a lot, it is enough for first month's rent. I just need first and last months' before I can start looking for apartments.
Even when I'm at home, the guys are tense. Jacob paces around a lot, and is constantly on the phone with the Cullens and Sam, even though Sam's wedding is on Saturday. Embry makes us food, but he's quieter than usual. Quil tries to pretend like everything is fine, but his smile doesn't reach his eyes.
By Saturday, I am ready for the wedding. I borrow Rachel's curling iron to get ready, dealing with my long locks. I pin them back and out of the way so that I won't be constantly doomed to tuck loose strands behind my ears.
When I make my way down the stairs, I'm the last to get ready. Embry and Quil are already wearing suits with jackets, their hair styled and put in place. Quil whistles as I come down the stairs with a laugh. Jacob scowls at him.
"You're so disrespectful," Jacob says, shaking his head.
Quil shrugs, "you're just jealous that you can't see her."
Once I make it to the bottom of the steps, Embry takes my hand and twirls me around in a circle.
"Have fun," Jacob manages to say. "Stay safe."
I nod, offering him a squeeze of my hand. It is only the morning, but we are already headed off to their house for the wedding.
It's too far to walk, and while we can get a cab out here, it'll cost a boatload of money, so Embry commits to not drinking. The drive over is beautiful. The longer I'm in La Push, the more I love cool colours. Green and blue, like the trees and the water. The sky is grey today, but there is no call for rain. I hope it is nice, or else Sam and Emily are screwed. They don't deserve to be either. not that anyone deserves rain on their wedding day, but Sam and Emily are exceptionally kind.
Well, at least Emily is sweet. I can't really speak on behalf of Sam. I guess I barely know either of them, but they've been nothing but helpful to me.
When we get to the ceremony, people are milling about. Embry and Quil bring me over to talk to the other people who work for Sam's fishing company. It seems silly now that I thought they were in a gang. They're just weird people, I think.
As the ceremony begins, we take our seats further near the back. Their families file in the middle, with each of their parents in the first row, followed by the fishermen who aren't groomsmen in the second row. It seems odd to me how close Sam is with a bunch of kids. I don't pay it any mind.
The ceremony is sweet and traditional. Emily does not wear a white dress, but one with multiple colours and beads. It has intricate designs and embroidery. She looks beautiful. Sam wears something else traditional as well, as does the man who runs the ceremony. Sam gets tears in his eyes when he sees her for the first time, and Emily's smile glows.
After the ceremony, is cocktail hour. The newlyweds run off to go take pictures with more important people, while Quil and Embry and I hang out with Seth and Rachel.
"You look lovely," I say to Rachel. Her dress is a deep blue, and it compliments her skin so well.
She smiles, "thank you. You as well. Too bad Jacob's not here to see it."
"I'm sure he's living it up at home," Seth smiles. "Tinkering with cars and whatnot."
"I wish he could've come," Embry says, frowning.
Quil and Embry and I all stay sober during cocktail hour. I'm too nervous to drink. I know I'm surrounded by people, so that lady cannot get to me, but I still feel panicked about it.
Then, we all sit around tables under a tarp, eating food and listening to speeches from Paul who is Sam's best man, and Emily's maid of honour. Leah is at the table, though she looks slightly more unimpressed than usual.
My table has the same group I talked to during cocktail hour. We make polite conversation, but I can feel the elephant in the room. They must know about the woman who has been following me. We don't talk about her though. We talk about anything else.
When the dinner is done, and the sun is setting, it's dancing time. We watch the couple's first dance before all of us break out onto the dance floor. Quil doesn't seem to care what he looks like, doing dances that look ridiculous for all to see. Embry is a bit more reserved, but with Seth's prodding, the two do some dancing as well.
They don't play many slow songs for the majority of the night, which is nice. It's just a chance to let loose. I feel myself relaxing. Eventually, I break from the others to go get a drink.
At the drink station, I watch a little girl run by me. She trips and falls, but keeps running off. She moving towards the woods.
I put down my drink and chase after her. I grab her just at the edge of the forest. Staring into it, I hear something rustling.
"Let me go!" she shouts.
"Sorry," I muster, releasing her. "Don't go in there. Bears live in the woods."
The little girl pouts out her lip but runs back to the party. I let her go, hopeful she doesn't get her mother to come and scold me for pulling her away from the forest.
"You're good with kids," a voice calls out from in the forest.
I walk backwards, not daring to take my eyes away from the trees. I don't call out; I know better than to attract danger.
"Fawn, why are you so scared of me?" she says. "I'd just like to be your friend."
"There are better ways of being my friend than following me around," I say back. I wish I had my switchblade on me. Nice dresses don't have pockets, and I didn't have a purse formal enough for the occasion. I even left my cellphone in Embry's pocket. "I don't even know your name."
The woman who has been trailing me steps out from behind a tree, and struts to the edge of the forest. She looks at me, grinning.
I swallow, looking her up and down.
She laughs, "Fawn, have you ever heard of the game of cat and mouse?"
She lowers her sunglasses and winks at me. Her eyes are red.
I gasp. I fall down scrambling back behind me.
She's a vampire.
They are real.
I turn around and run back to the party. I don't dare look over my shoulder, but I can hear her laughing. If she wanted to kill me, she could. She doesn't though, and that terrifies me more. If I've disappeared once though, I can disappear again.
I wind up back at the crowd and try to casually make my way through it. My heart is racing though and my palms are sweaty. My hair is ruined; it falls it my face and I'm forced to tuck back the strands. The bass is pumping, and I finally stumble on Embry and Quil.
I grab their wrists, and pull them in close to me, "we need to go. Now."
Quil says something to me, but the background noise is too much to hear him. He pulls away and waving his arms in the air. He's a few drinks in now, and out of it.
With my free hand, I sign deaf again. I know I'm not deaf, but it generally gets the message across to more hearing people than the hard of hearing sign.
Embry leans in closer, putting his lips near my ear, "did something happen?"
He looks over my shoulder, then back at me. Creases form on his forehead, and he grabs Quil. The curly-haired boy rolls his eye.
Quil mouths something again
"I don't have time to explain," I say, because why would they believe me even if I did? "The woman's here and she means bad news."
Quil's jaw drops. He dashes through the crowd, leaving Embry and myself in his wake.
"She won't attack anyone if we're in a crowd," Embry says. "It'll be fine for now."
"No, I need to leave," I insist. I refuse to let any of these people who helped me get hurt. "I'd steal your keys and go without you. I'm only making you take me because I've never learned how to drive."
Embry sighs, and rubs his hands over his jaw. He looks at me and then looks behind me. Embry grits his teeth, before speaking. "Fine. I don't think this is the right call, but alright."
We hurry out of the crowd and over to the car. Then, we file inside, and Embry puts the car into drive. Leaving Quil behind, we race back to Jacob's house.

*Dramatic piano music*. Obviously, vampires are real. We been knew. But Fawn hasn't, so this is quite a shock for her. It's only going to get more dramatic from here.
