Over the weekend, I barely catch glimpses of Jacob. He spends most of the time with the Cullens. I'm beginning to think he left his heart in Bella's truck and has no intention of getting it back. Mostly, I feel embarrassed. Disappointed too, but embarrassed. Probably because I got shitfaced on Friday and haven't been able to talk to him sober yet.

Just as my shift ends, I hear a knock on the kitchen door.

"Come in," I beckon.

One of the younger servers, Marie, comes in. She offers me a pleasant wave. "Hey, Fawn. There's a woman here waiting for you. She didn't say her name, but she knew yours."

"What does she look like?" I ask, not knowing what to expect.

"She's petite," Marie offers. "Asian."

I sigh, "tell her I've already left."

"Is something wrong?" Marie asks. She steps inside and closes the door behind her. "You know, if she's been bothering you, we can call the police."

Shaking my head, I pull on my jacket. "She's probably harmless. Just an old friend who can be a bit annoying. Hopefully, she'll take the hint and leave."

"I'll tell her your already gone," Marie says. "Also, we all grab drinks on Saturdays at the bar in town. Do you want to come?"

"I've got a wedding, but thank you," I smile at her. "Next week, for sure."

When she smiles at me, she waves me good-bye. From there, I head out of the diner through the employee entrance, and make my way to the back. I run around to the side of the building and hop into Embry's car.

"Drive," I instruct.

He pulls out of his spot, and begins to hurry away. "You know Fawn, you're scaring me."

"I think I've been found," I tell him. "By a private investigator. She knows my name, even though I haven't told it to her."

"Huh," he says. "Well, you're 18. Not much they can do to drag you home."

I grit my teeth. The problem is, I'm turning 18 a week after Emily and Sam's wedding. They could drag me back home at any point until then. If I'm found, which I think I am, that means trouble.

"Your... your family wouldn't come here to find you, would they?" Embry asks.

Of course, they would. If they knew I was here, they'd already be planning their assault. "I bet the PI is just trying to two time my family. Get me to buy her off, before telling them where I've been staying. Anyway, how was your day?"

Embry spends the rest of the ride talking about fishing. I didn't know that there was so much to know about something that seems so miserable and awful. I'm not one to be idle.

Once we get home, dinner is already on the table.

"Someone's following Fawn," Embry says.

I scowl at him and stick out my tongue. I thought that maybe things had changed. Obviously, Embry is not to be trusted.

"What?" Jacob is sitting at the table, and his voice is loud. "Who?"

"Some PI," Embry says.

"Is she Asian?" Jacob asks.

I look at the others. Clearly my suspicions are not correct. She is not a PI.

"She's been coming to the diner," I tell them. "Not much to it except that she unsettles me."

"So, she is Asian?" Jacob says.

My silence speaks for me. Jacob sighs and digs into his pocket. He pulls out his phone.

"How long have you noticed her?" Jacob asks.

I shrug, "about a week. Should I be frightened?"

"Quil," Jacob gestures for Quil to come over to him. Quil obliges. "Call Bella for me, would you?"

"Bella saw her," I offer. "When she gave me my hearing aid. The day after the crash."

Jacob pulls the phone up to his ear. I can't hear it ringing, but I wish I could. I feel like something worse than this woman is coming. Something worse than being trapped at home.

"Hey, Bella," Jacob says. "Hi. Listen, Alice was right. She's here. Already."

Silence follows. In that silence I stand alone. I do not trust Embry right now. My breath is becoming more ragged, and I try to keep it quiet.

There is nothing I can't handle, I remind myself. I've jumped off cliffs. I've fought people older and more experienced than me and bested them, on occasion. That can't stop a gun though. What if she's armed and dangerous?

"Yeah, she refuses to go to leave, because of the diner job," Jacob says. "I'll send Quil and Embry over, and let Sam know. Sounds good. Yep. See you soon."

When he hangs up the phone, Embry pulls away. He walks over to the table and huddles up with Quil. "What's the plan?"

"You and Quil are going to the Cullens to come up with something," Jacob says. "Call Sam, and explain what's happening. Tell him to send over Jared and Paul. It's our best bet."

"Got it," Quil says.

He and Embry race out of the house, ignoring the food on the table. I take a step closer and sit down opposite of Jacob.

"Who is it?" Jacob asks.

"I don't know," Jacob says, and I cannot for the life of me, which may be at stake, tell if he is being honest.

"Does Alice know?" I ask.

"Alice saw someone tailing you in Port Angeles," Jacob tells me.

He takes a bite of his food. I'm less than hungry. My stomach sways inside me. I am nothing but driftwood caught in the ocean's tide. Its wrath is catching up to me. There is no lighthouse. Nothing to look forward too.

"You're hyperventilating," Jacob says, his voice quiet. "Fawn. It's okay."

He reaches across the table, and though my body has grown stiff I lean forward. He cups my face, tucking hair behind my ear. I swallow, trying to catch my breath. Why am I so unnaturally frightened?

"I think she's watched me sleep," I tell him. "I think she was here the other day, but I couldn't figure out where she ran to hide."

"She's been here?" he asks. "You're sure?"

"I'm not sure of anything!" I exclaim.

I pull back from his touch and run my hands through my hair. I can feel my heart racing.

"Come here," he instructs.

His voice is strong and commanding, so I do as he says. When I join him on the other side of the table, he reaches his hands out for me to take. I do as he says, lifting him up from his spot. I lead him over to the couch where we sit beside each other.

"Let's just pretend it's a normal, Friday night until Jared and Paul get here, okay?" he says. He holds my hands in his still. "Now, are you excited about the wedding?"

Not if someone is going to be following me there. I take in a deep breath and nod, "yeah."

"I'm jealous," he jokes, a laugh on his lips. "I'm sure the Cullens are too. You're going to get to dance, and I'll be stuck here."

"I've never slow danced before," I tell him.

He frowns, "well, you're going to have to practice beforehand. Maybe Quil and Embry can show you how?"

"What, you can't?" I try to joke, but I feel nauseous. "You're blind, not paralyzed."

He pauses. Biting his lip, he stands. "Push the couch to the back of the room, and move the coffee table to the TV so we have room."

I do as he says, clearing the space for us to dance. Honestly, I hand't expected that to work. His face nose is scrunched but otherwise, he has on the perfect poker face.

He pulls out his phone and passes it to me. He doesn't have any slow songs saved, so I look them up on YouTube. From there, I pull up a song to which we can dance.

He bows, holding his hand out. I take it, and he pulls me in close to him. With each beat, he leads me in a dance. We don't just sway. He's gone to school dances; he knows how to move his feet. I follow along, careful not to step on his toes and to guide us away from any furniture. He smiles and twirls me.

"You're a natural," he says.

I was trained to be nimble, "thank you."

"No seriously," he says. "Maybe the best dancing partner I've ever had."

It might be mean, but I'm glad he cannot see the blush that rises to my cheeks.

He's got to be almost a foot taller than me, so it's hard to see his face. So, I lean my head against his chest, letting his warmth radiate through me. I look up at him.

"Can I see your eyes?" I ask, my voice as quiet as possible. So quiet I can't hear it. I don't know if it comes out at all.

He leans down to look at me. He takes off his glasses and I see his eyes. Pure obsidian. So black they look almost fake. I reach up and touch the sides of his face.

A shout erupts from outside.

Jacob puts his glasses back on, "they're here."

I leave him, walking over the door to get it. I open it, and on the other side is Paul. Rachel's boyfriend. He walks up to me and turns me around, pushing me and shutting the door outside.

"Jacob, we need you outside," he says. "Now."

Jacob stumbles over. With everything moved, it is harder for him to get there. I move over to him and help him over.

"We shouldn't leave her inside alone," Jacob says. His hand clings to my waist. "At least bring Jared in. We think the woman's been here."

"Oh, she's been here alright," Paul snaps. "Come outside and you'll see."

"I can't see," Jacob grumbles. He lets go of me and steps outside.

With him gone, I peek out the kitchen window, certain I will see the woman. She's not there, but her ghost is.

There's no such thing as ghosts, I remind myself. There is no such thing as anything fantastical.

It's the little moments that make a difference. So far, no reveal yet. There is so much Fawn doesn't know. You could write a book full of the things she has yet to comprehend.

Next up, the wedding. Aren't you excited?
