Loan Shark
The next day, Fallon walked to school by herself. She could see a girl sitting outside crying. Fallon recognised her as a girl in Fallon's year group called Leanne. Fallon didn't know why she was crying, but she was curious. Fallon could see Leanne going over to another girl Fallon knew as Bella.
"What's wrong with you today?" Fallon could hear Bella ask. She decided to listen in on the conversation.
"Oh. It's nothing." Leanne trailed off. Fallon could instantly tell she was lying, as could Bella.
"That's fine, but you know where I am if you want to talk." Bella stood up to leave, but Leanne stopped her.
"Well... There is something I want to talk about." Bella sat back down on the bench as Leanne continued. "Ever since mum died, dad has been drinking... a lot. Sometimes, when he's drunk, he..." Fallon was really curious now. But Leanne didn't want to continue. "Look. Forget I said anything ok. I'm not going to say any more.
"That sounds terrible. If you don't want to talk, that's fine. I'm here if you want to talk though." They both stood up and walked away. What had she meant? Fallon had to know. Maybe she could help her? She really needed some good karma right now.
At lunch, Fallon waited by the top floor bathrooms for Leanne. She had left a note for her, asking her to meet her there. Fallon really hoped she would show up. Just when she was losing hope, Leanne approached her.
"Oh. Your the one who wanted to meet me here?" Leanne asked. Leanne didn't know Fallon, or why she wanted to meet her here.
"Yes. I heard you talking to Bella this morning. What does your father do when he's drunk?" Leanne looked surprised, but it quickly changed into a sad sigh.
"He... Cries... About his debt problems." She looked down at the floor as she continued. "My dad borrowed money from some shady people who increased the interest rate almost every day."
"What was the name of the company he borrowed money from?" Fallon asked, curiosity getting the best of her. Leanne looked up for a moment and told her the name of the loan shark. "I'm going to get your father out of debt."
"What? No. It's really nice of you to want to help, but what can you do?" Leanne had a surprised look on her face. She was genuinely curious on how Fallon thought she could help.
"I have a plan." Fallon smiled, before walking away mysteriously.
Fallon didn't have a plan. She needed to do some research on the loan shark. At least she had Isabel on her side. She texted Isabel the name of the loan shark and waited for a response. When the response came, Fallon was surprised. The loan shark had a daughter in Fallon's year, that girl was Bella. Leanne's best friend was her fathers loan sharks daughter. Fallon wanted to laugh. That was all she needed to form a plan.
