World's End Umbrella (AU)
This is an AU. It's going to be Semi and Een taking place of the boy and girl in World's End Umbrella. This is one of my favorite songs and I couldn't figure out which character to do this with for an x Reader so this was born. Well onto the story!
The umbrella blocking out the sun, the sky crying on everyone
And the townspeople, all too blind, they question it not
Een sat on a bench with an umbrella over her head and a book in hand. It was a story book, which held the details of the sky that had been locked away from the townspeople's eyes. No one knows why or how the umbrella came be, all that's known about it is that it's horrible at keeping out rain, or as the inhabitants of the town call them, "leaks", and that it has blocked out the sun over this little town for years, maybe centuries. She had always asked her mother why there was an umbrella over their town, but never got an answer. No one ever bothered to question it. No one cared.
Towards the umbrella we two faced, and you spat at it in disgrace
Yet it too went into the rain, and we could say naught
Within that moment, I knew no one spoke;
You felt the rain, and as if provoked,
You took my hand, and then towards that tower...
We went running
Suddenly, Een felt someone's presence behind her. She set her book down and closed up her umbrella, as it seemed the rain stopped for a little while. Looking up she saw her best friend, Semi. He was the only one who supported her idea of seeing the sky, because he too, hated the umbrella. He hated that no one questioned why it was here, he hated that everything was always shrouded in darkness.
"Why does no one care that we live in darkness?! Why are we always told never to go near the umbrella? There's a sky out there..." Semi trailed off and mumbled something incoherently. If Een had learned anything from her friendship with Semi, it was to never question what that Tsun-Tsun said; he'd just get grumpy. She watched as Semi slowly held out his hand, the rain had started again. A few rain drops hit his hand and he glared at them before roughly clenching his fist. His head shot towards the tower at the center of the town, then back to Een who was grabbing her book, having already reopened her umbrella. He swiftly grabbed her tanned wrist in his pale hands and started running towards the tower.
Together we'd always been, and so you promised me
"There is a sky that we've found but in stories, it's time that we went to see"
In that moment, the rain simply seemed to go away
And so did our prior sadness, forgotten just the same
As they were running, Een remembered something Semi once told her during one of their many walks around the town when they were kids;
"Hey Een, have you noticed that we've always been together? I can't remember a time we were apart." Young Een stared at him with her big beautiful brown eyes, causing him to avert his gaze, for a reason unknown to her. Quickly, Semi shot his brown orbs to the maroon haired girl again. "Hey, remember that book you told me about? The one that you said describes how the sky looks? Well, there's a sky, we found it. It's just locked away in story books, how about when we're older I take you to see it?"
The young girl's eyes went wide as she stared at her blonde friend. His slightly spiky, black-tip dyed blonde hair was swaying slowly in the wind. "You'd do that for me? Semi thank you, thank you, thank you!" Een jumped into a hug, successfully knocking them both down. At first Semi has a stern look on his face, seemingly upset. When he noticed his expression had worried his loving and kindhearted friend he softened his face into a small smile. He wouldn't show this side to just anyone, only she could see him smile.
As soon as she came back to reality she smiled. Wider than she had before. She had forgotten that promise they made all those years ago, and she was sure Semi had too. Oh how wrong she was. He remembered the promise he made from all those years ago. How could he forget? He'd never seen his childhood friend so happy before, and he wanted to cherish that forever.
They ran and ran, the rain was slowing them a little but it didn't stop their running. After what felt like an hour - due to the heavy rain that were barreling down on them - they arrived at the center of the town. At the umbrella. Een slowly slipped her hand out of Semi's grip. She started having second thoughts about going inside. 'What would they find? Would it be locked? Would they get in trouble? What if they somehow got locked in there forever?' Those were the thoughts running through her head. The pale, blonde male noticed her hesitation and looked at her with soft, caring eyes.
"Een, don't worry. It'll be okay, we'll see the sky and you won't have to rely on that book of yours to imagine it anymore." He stated, staring into her deep brown orbs. He still saw some doubt, but now mostly saw confidence. He smiled softly and grasped her smooth hand again. She smiled back at him and squeezed his hand. Together they slowly pushed on the door, expecting it to be locked. To their amazement, it wasn't. Gazing inside of the tower, they noticed it was completely abandoned. It looked as though no one has ever tried to enter it. It was safe to assume that no one would've ever tried to enter wether it was locked or not. They noticed the door led them to a spiral staircase; Een's grip on Semi's hand got tighter and she began to shake slightly. The tsundere boy did not let this go unnoticed and just gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before continuing forward, heading up the ancient and possibly unstable staircase.
Climbing we picked up our pace, up an ancient spiral staircase,
Stained in black as the dripping rain repeats its echo
And I, nearly about to cry, was encouraged by you so nearby,
As you gently held my land and took me in tow
As they got higher and higher up the staircase, it seemed to go on forever. Everything was dark and there was very little light available to them, where the light came from was unknown to them. All they could hear, aside from their footsteps, was the heavy rain, pelting down on the outside world. The rickety staircase, rain, and ominous lighting inside the tower was enough to terrify Een. She began to shake again and tears prickled in the corners of her eyes. She started to let her hand slowly fall out of Semi's much larger hand. She began to fall back a few stairs behind him, which he noticed.
"Een, don't worry so much. It's not like anyone's here, this place has been abandoned for God knows how long. It's fine." Semi stated, trying to maintain his cool exterior but he had a hint of worry laced in his voice. He continued on walking, taking Een along with him. Never letting her hand out of his to ensure she didn't somehow get separated from him.
Chased down by a shadow ghostly white
Countless rows of cages moved in and out of sight
Yet there was no time to search for a reason...
Nor'd we want to
My hands started trembling but you could hold them still
Given such aid, I could not be afraid; to protect you, my only will
Sometime later, the two reached the top of the staircase. However it seemed they still needed to head down the hallway and possibly up another set of stairs to reach the top. They had been going up those stairs for quite a while and they ended up losing track of how high up they were getting. Neither wanted to look down and see. They two teens continue walking, however Semi senses something is amiss. He looks back to see a white shadow following them. His grip on the brunette's hand got tighter as he started running, taking her along with him. As they were running down the endless hallway, they noticed rows of a identical object swinging back and forth. The little light available was just enough for them to be able to make the object out to be cages. They had no idea what those cages were doing there, or what was chasing them and they had no desire to find out.
Een was getting increasingly more and more scared. First being chased, now seeing cages?! Everything was getting too overwhelming and she began to question if it was all worth seeing the sky after all. Her hands began to shake once again but Semi looked at her and flashed her a smile, a heart warming and caring smile. Despite the fast that they were running and sweating his smile was breathtaking. It somehow managed to calm her. Since Semi had helped the brown eyed girl so many times, she decided it'd be best if she'd try to do the same for him, if the time were to come that he needed assistance.
Gears lurking within the darkness laugh, and all seemed bleak
But, hey, don't you seek the gentle wind brushing past your cheek?
As they continued running, they began to hear gears turn. The pair had no idea what machine the gears went to and were slightly scared to find out but kept moving forward; because although they didn't know how close they were to the exit, Een did feel a gentle wind on her face. That wind was enough to encourage her to push through.
Een decided to comment on the wind. "Hey Semi..? Can you feel the wind blowing..? We may be close to the exit." Semi nodded, acknowledging her but not saying a word. They wouldn't stop running, the hallway seemed to never end. It felt as though they had been running for hours but at the same time looked as though they had just started. And their previous fatigue from going up those flights of stairs doesn't help the matter.
Around the town, people noticed Semi and Een were missing but didn't think much of it. They didn't find any traces that they'd been kidnapped. Not only that but the town was very small and did not take kindly to outsiders. They couldn't find any traces of the two so they just assumed they had wandered off and would be back later. Not a worry in the world for the two missing children.
The white shadow chasing us stopped chasing anymore
And though it seemed sad, it started to disappear
Our surroundings smelled like rust and we were colored wholly black
But at last, murky colors turned to clear
Semi looked back to see if the shadow he saw earlier was still present. It was gone. He stopped walking for a minute causing Een to look back. "Semi, why'd you stop?" She asked, slightly out of breath from running despite slowing down quite a bit a little ways back.
"Look." He pointed back towards the way they just came from. "Whatever was following us is gone. We can continue walking at a normal pace." Een nodded in response. She decided to be the one to take the lead this time and started on forward again, pulling him along with her. Their surroundings had been dark and depressing for a little while. It seems whatever had given them a light source was gone now. Continuing on the two continued to walk side by side. The scent of rust was assaulting their senses as they entered a new section of the tower, even darker than the last. Een scrunched her nose at the scent causing Semi to laugh a little.
"Hey! It's not funny!" Een yelled at the taller male.
"Actually, it kind of is. You look so cute~" He teased her again. The comment caused her to blush dark red and look at the ground. She didn't look for until Semi tapped her shoulder, signaling that he wanted to say or show her something. She looked up towards where he was pointing, straight ahead she saw the room getting lighter and lighter. Getting excited she swiftly moved her hand out of his grip, only to move it to his wrist and start running.
As we kept on walking we could hear a voice call out to us
Maybe just imagined, or maybe heard before
Waiting past the final step, at the far end of the hall
There was a small, ordinary door
All covered with dust, waiting here, just ignored
Once they reached the lighter part of the tower they slowed down back to a slow walking pace. The two thought they heard someone calling out to them from back the way they came. They brushed it off as the wind blowing and kept on walking, knowing they were close to the exit. When they came to a small door Een couldn't hold back her smile, and she didn't want to. It looked as though it has never been touched. Dusty yet clean, in a way.
"We should open it! I have a feeling the exit is right beyond that door." Semi nodded in response and together they pushed the door open.
And beyond it, we saw almost all of everything before our eyes
Flowers in bloom in a rainbow of colors below such a vivid sky
In this captivating world, with only you and I...
All that I could need was right by my side
Een stepped out but didn't look up. She was so scared, but while looking at the ground she noticed there were flowers growing in the cracks of the tile. Semi noticed Een hadn't looked up and gently slipped his hand out of hers to set it on her shoulder. She looked up at his in shock before he nodded, wordlessly telling her to look. When she looked up she say the rain had stopped and the sun began to set. They both stared in awe at the mix of hues of light blues, pinks, reds, oranges, and purples. Averting her attention from the colors she saw the sun. The sun that had been missing from their town for countless years. She looked down and saw a valley of flowers far out away from her little town. It really was a sight to see. In that moment, she felt as though her and Semi were the only two people in the world. The rest of the world was blocked out. All that mattered was that she saw the sky and it was with him.
The sky locked in storybooks you promised we would see
Now in our sights, let's return this back to the place where it ought to be
When I turned around, you held a bunch of flowers just for me
And together we laughed; softly, on your shoulder I leaned
The grip Een had on her book tightened. She walked closer to the edge of the balcony, and opened her book to the page that showed the sky. The tan girl closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath, then opened them again and threw her book off the edge. She watched as it fluttered down, the pages of the book turn as the wind blew. She turned to face where Semi was standing and saw him holding out flowers that he had picked from the cracks in the tile. The blonde's face was a deep red as he held them out for her, to which she laughed in response. Soon after he joined and all that could be heard by anyone nearby was their laughter. Semi walked to stand next to her and she leaned her head on his shoulder while staring out at the sky. No words were spoken, because they felt they were not needed.
Waiting for us at world's end, the umbrella is raised,
As long as such a world exists, I know for sure that it will be okay
I'll always be happy here as long as I'm with you
Lying there on top of the umbrella where the flowers bloomed
Faces filled with happiness that stayed there forever
Peacefully the two slept side by side together...
Amidst their silent staring they began to hear the hear again, this time above them. They looked up and saw the umbrella was closing up. The two smiled at each other, knowing that when they return to their town it would no longer be covered by the dreaded umbrella that covered the beautifully breathtaking sky. The two sat down and learned against the wall of the tower. Smiling together and holding hands, fingers intertwined. Slowly they two fell asleep while smiles still etched onto their faces. They both knew, as long as they can see the sky again everything would be okay. There was no reason to worry anymore. They had each other and could see the sky. That was perfect.
