3 ~ Lost
(The song 'Dream' by Imagine Dragons, or 'It's Been So Long,' by the Living Tombstone)
Through the forest Dipper ran. Leaves slapped at his face, and the now distant sound of Ford as he chased after him was fading. Soon, it was all quiet. Turning around, Dipper decided to make his way back and to then go and warn all of their friends.
Only one issue. He had no idea where he was. Nothing seemed familiar here. How could he have been so stupid? Why had he thought that running would have helped?
It would only lead to everyone becoming even more separated. It was all his fault. Everything that was going on now was because of him. Even if it hadn't been directly at first, it was now. Yet, at this point, it was too late to fix anything. The Pines family was falling apart. Deep in his heart, Dipper knew he was at the center of it. Because of him they were in danger.
He wiped at his face, surprised to find tears falling down his cheeks. Perhaps there was yet a way to fix all of this. Dipper stood up and decided to walk and think. Distantly, he wondered if Ford had turned back yet. It was getting cold outside, a slight drizzle fell from the dark gray clouds.
He could go back and try to talk to them. No, that wouldn't work. Everyone would just be mad and frustrated with him. Plus, by the time he found his way back they would be too suspicious. Dipper couldn't blame them really. Suddenly, his foot caught something and sent him tumbling to the muddy ground. Turning around, his eyes widened in surprise.
A faded red pentagram was draw on the forest floor. Around it, candles formed a circle. It was where Gideon had summoned Bill for the first time! He supposed that it made sense, no one would have wondered out here to clean up.
That wasn't what caught his attention though. No, that would be the fact that Journal 2 was resting on the ground at his feet. He still had the third one in his vest. So how had that one gotten out here? Oh no, what if Bill had broken the barrier finally and set this here? It would make sense. Yet, it didn't all add up.
Maybe he wanted to be summoned? Yes! By having someone summon him, he could pop into their world for a little while! Dipper had been set up. Was that what everything had been leading up to?
By turning everyone against each other during the portal incident, one of them might look for help. Help from a certain dream demon. That did explain the nightmares Dipper had been getting. In fact, it seemed to explain lots of things.
It explained everything.
Dipper, having figured it out, carefully picked up the second journal and turned to head back to the Shack. Only, he had to carry the journal, seeing as how both wouldn't fit in his vest. If he went back like this they would wonder why he had it. Especially since it was the one that held the instructions to summon Bill. With everything the way it was, would they trust him? Would they even believe that it was him?
Maybe, just maybe if he tried to ask Bill... No! No, that would never work. Dipper would be forced into some kind of unfair deal again.
Though, what if he asked Bill to fix all the mistrust and betrayal in the family. The compromise couldn't be too great, could it? For minutes, the two sides of his brain warred with each other. Do it or don't? It was such a simple question, yet it was without a quick answer. Why? Why?!
Tears once again running down his face, Dipper opened the journal to its marked page. The words and actions to do what he needed to do were spelled out so innocently on that page. It was for Mabel, though. For everyone. Surely that made it okay?
Dipper lit the candles with matches, careful to not blow them out. He was lucky that the rain had finally subsided again.
Looking at the instructions, he grimaced at the idea of what he next had to do. Tossing out the old picture of Stan that had once rested in the middle, he broke the grass on the frame of the picture and picked up a shard of glass. With it, he pricked his finger, letting the blood drip into the center.
He held his hand back and started the summoning.
"Triangulum, entangulum. meteforis dominus ventium. meteforis venetisarium!" Dipper called out. His eyes lit up blue and a strange feeling fell over him as he said, "Egassem sdrawkcab! Egassem sdrawkcab! Egassem sdrawkcab! Rgassem sdrawkcab! Egassem sdrawkcab!"
The world slowed down. Dipper looked down to his feet as everything was bleached of color. Unlike the first time where Bill had made a graentrance, this time there was no dramatic lights. He simply was there. Neither said anything, though Dipper could practically feel the contempt through the air as the dream demon watched him.
"So," Bill drawled out, "you want your family back, PineTree?"
Dipper felt his heart seize up and his breathing fell uneven. What had he done? Why had he done it in the first place? As if Bill, Bill, a dream demon, would ever truly help him.
"Sure I can!"
Now, Dipper felt confidence surge within him. If this was going to work, he couldn't let Bill bend his wishes. "No you can't! You'll just trick me again!"
"Can you really blame me for your own insolence Pine Tree?"
Dipper scowled, this wasn't going well.
"Tell you what!" Bill said, getting closer. "I'll leave. Right now, Pine Tree. Just tell me to go."
But if Bill left, there might not be a way to fix everything, to make sure that everything ended correctly. Mabel would still be in danger, everyone would find out that he had summoned Bill. They would hate him. The family would fall apart, because of him.
"Wait." Dipper said, so quietly that he was afraid Bill wouldn't hear him.
"Good choice Pine Tree!"
Dipper tinted his head down in shame, but suddenly Bill was there, whisking his hat right off of his head. Dipper tried to grasp it back, but Bill only drifted higher, just out of range.
"Bill!" He called. "What do you want?"
The dream demon laughed. "You can't be that dumb, can you Pine Tree?"
When Dipper scowled even more, Bill laughed harder.
"You know what!" He tossed the hat back to Dipper, who fumbled and caught it. "See Pine Tree, I need some help with something! A big something! Your dimension is safe, mine is slowly deteriorating."
"So?"
"So, Pine Tree, it's not very fun to be stuck there for trillions of years! This dimension is much better! It even comes with free toys!"
Dipper stepped back as he held the journal tight to his chest. "Your point?"
"If I could merge my realm with this one, all my issues would be solved! You humans might have to put up with demons for a few years until your all dead, but why would I care!"
"That doesn't sound very fair."
"Then it won't happen like that! This is your deal, Pine Tree, state whatever it is you want and I'll name what you have to do!"
Dipper felt reluctance fill his mind. This had to have been too easy. However, his hand slowly crept out, even as Bill held out his own. The blue flames flickered mere inches away from his palm. All he had to do was shake Bill's hand, and then everything would be resolved. Though, what exactly did the demon even want from him?
"Wait," Dipper said, "what will I have to do?"
"We'll work that out later, Pine Tree." The demon said. "Don't you want to save your family?"
Trying to not think about all the terrible things that might be led to from this, Dipper grabbed the dream demon's hand. Cold blue fire licked up his arm. The last time he had done this, the only sensation Dipper had been aware of was his soul being ripped out. He was quite glad that it didn't happen again this time.
"So! Pine Tree!" Bill said, floating around him. "I agree to not harm the Pines family in any direct ways."
"But?" Dipper asked, ready for some impossible task. What Bill asked for wasn't too far off from it.
"You have to give me the two journals you have right now."
"What! No! That isn't fair!"
"I could always ask for the rift or have you kill Mabel."
Dipper felt heavy dread settle in the pit of his stomach. This had been a bad idea. Then again, why wasn't Bill having him do those other things?
Bill laughed. "I have other ways Pine Tree! Now hand them over!"
Surely if Dipper held them back - but then everyone at the Shack would be in danger again. Wasn't the rest of the world more important then just his family though? Dipper handed the journals over. Bill Cipher laughed. The books didn't burn, instead they simply disappeared into thin air.
"Wha-?"
"Even I have use for the journals!" Bill said as he started to disappear. "And I won't have to harm the Pines family! They'll do that for me!"
"You promised! We made a deal that you would fix everything!" Dipper shouted, trying to step forward, but he couldn't pass the edge of the summoning circle. There was an invisible wall.
"I did, Pine Tree! But nothing lasts forever! Including this pathetic dimension!" The dream demon disappeared in a flash, leaving Dipper to stare after him as the world faded back into color. When he had finally managed to calm down enough, he turned and ran back to Mystery Shack before Ford managed to find him.
