22 ~ Steps
Song: In Fact by Gregory and The Hawk
Welcome back to the feels train.
Enjoy the ride.
Here ya go sheep:
(now Mabel's pov)
"I can't believe that he doesn't understand." Dipper muttered. "He has twelve PhD's but he can't understand anything."
Mabel smiled, looking up from the book she was reading. "He probably wasn't expecting you to save his life, Dip Dots. It's not everyday that a demon does something good. Maybe Ford's just confused."
Dipper looked over at her. They were currently in the attic, in the room that they used to share. Mabel was sitting in her bed, Dipper was sitting on the floor where his bed used to be.
"Still! He only thinks that something bad will happen. Can't he tell that I can keep you guys safe like this?" He frowned. "Sometimes I think he just wants me gone, you know?"
Mabel put the book down. "Dipper, c'mon, he doesn't want that! He's still just getting used to everything!"
"And so are you, apparently." He said. Mabel grimaced at the thought of the conversation she had had with Ford earlier that day. She'd prefer to not remember that. It hadn't been the best talk of her life.
"Well, duh!" She said happily. "Of course I'm still getting used to it. Everyone is! So are you! But that's okay!"
"But Mabel--"
"And it doesn't matter what anyone says! You're still my brother! And I know you would never do anything bad and mean it. You'll keep everyone save, including yourself." She put her hands on her hips as though that would help to solidify the statement.
"But what if he was right?" Dipper said, pulling his legs up until he was huddled in one spot. "What if something goes wrong or I do something... What if something happens to you and it's my fault?"
Mabel stood up and walked over to him, sitting beside him. She sat there for a while, silently. "Dipper, as long you do everything you can, and as long as you don't overdo it, then nothing will ever be entirely your fault. Got it?"
Dipper didn't say anything. Mabel sighed, she had definitely hoped for a better reaction.
"Sometimes you take things too seriously." She said.
"Maybe you don't understand how serious this is!" He snapped back, then frowned ."Sorry."
"Hey, don't apologize!" Mabel said. "You could be right. Maybe this is worse than I thought. But so far, I just think that everyone just needs some time to get used to this. This isn't exactly a normal situation to be in, you know."
She froze as she felt arms wrap around her and as Dipper engulfed her in a hug. He felt cold, but she didn't really mind. After a while she rubbed his back. "Hey, it's okay, bro bro."
"Thanks Mabel. You don't know how much I needed that talk."
"I have a pretty good idea." She said, smiling. "No, I needed to talk to. Now get up, goof ball. I'm bored, and I want to do something."
Laughing, Dipper leaned back and stood up, helping Mabel up. She was about to say something, but suddenly they were standing downstairs. Mabel stumbled forward, trying to regain her balance.
"Woah, sorry." Dipper said. "I should have told you I was going to teleport us downstairs. It's a little confusing at first."
"Really?" She said. "I never would have figured that out."
Dipper rolled his eyes. "You okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. Stop worrying."
"Hey, you're the one who almost fell over."
She scoffed, standing taller. "I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. It was obviously you who fell over, not me."
Without waiting for Dipper to answer, she grabbed his hand and pulled him through the Mystery Shack. She would have taken Dipper to meet Wendy, Soos, Candy and Grenda, but both Stan and Ford had agreed to not do that. It was probably for the best.
On second hand, she should have thought of something to do before dragging her brother off to do something. What could one do with a dream demon without accidentally running into anyone and scaring them?
"Uh, hey, Mabel?" Dipper said suddenly. "I've been meaning to ask you something." He rubbed the back of his neck nervously, gold and black eyes suddenly studying the floor.
"Yeah? What's you're question?" She turned around to look at him.
"Well, see, they've been--"
"They?"
"Uh, I mean me, sorry." He coughed. "But... I know I died an all, and Bill only took my soul and stuff... So, what exactly did you guys do?"
She blinked, confused for a moment. What did he mean, what did they do? Then it hit her. Was he asking where they buried him? She should have expected that.
"Was it back home?" He asked, knowing that she had figured it out. "Because... Piedmont doesn't really..."
Mabel winced, remember what exactly had happened to their hometown. Sometimes it was still on TV, the death count raising with few survivors. It wasn't a surprise that Dipper didn't want to mention that.
"No, actually, her in Gravity Falls."
His head shot up. "Wait really? Why here and why not back home?"
"I don't know. I think Ford and Stan had a talk with our, um, with our parents, and the ceremony thing was held here, and then mom and dad took me home." Another painful reminder of what had happened to their parents.
"Do you think anyone ever visited?"
Mabel was suddenly feeling even more awkward, this was not a conversation that she had ever thought that she would be having. "I know Soos did, Wendy would leave flowers, so would Ford and Stan sometimes. Dipper, why do you need to know this?"
"Nothing, I was just wondering was all."
"You thought that they would forget about you, didn't you?" Mabel said, scowling at her brother. "You thought that no one would care!"
Dipper ducked his head, once again studying his shoes with extreme interest. He said something that she couldn't quite catch.
"Sometimes you're an idiot, bro bro." She said, grabbing his hand and pulling him along again. "How could you think that?"
She missed the small smile on Dipper's face when she said that. He gave a faint laugh and let her continue to pull him along, not really caring where they were going anymore, just happy to be back again.
She finally pulled him into the kitchen. If she couldn't think of anything to do, she'd just grab a snack and chat with him then. At least it was something.
"Mabel, it's still morning! Why are you--" Dipper trailed off when they both say Ford sitting at the table, looking at some notes. He was still a little battered looking from the fight in the town.
He looked up when they walked in, first looking at Mabel, then at Dipper. Mabel tried to smile at him, but she could tell that he knew she was uneasy.
"Hello Mabel, Dipper." He greeted. "What are you doing?"
"We're just trying to find something to do." Dipper said. "Nothing really. I think Mabel wants some food." He gave her a sideways glance. "Even if it's almost time for lunch."
To Mabel's surprise, Ford actually laughed. "She hasn't changed a bit." The words 'but you have' went unsaid, but she could practically here them in the air.
"Yep, same old Mabel." Dipper said with a bright smile.
Mabel didn't know why they both seemed so friendly. From what Dipper had told her, the two hadn't had a very nice talk earlier. What was going on?
Deciding to ignore it, she decided to grab something out of the fridge. Finding a little bit of apple juice, she poured herself a glass, then chose to sit across from Ford at the table. She wanted to see what would happen if the three of them started a conversation.
Dipper floated beside her, pulling himself into a sitting position and hovering there. She was a little bit disappointed when he didn't actually sit down. At least he hadn't left. Yet.
"So, what do you two have planned for today?" Ford said, still glancing down at the papers in front of him. "You have to have planned something, right? Just don't run into any demon summoning cults this time, okay?"
"That was an accident." Dipper mumbled under his breath. Mabel covered what he said with a cough.
"Pfft! How did you know what we had planned?" She asked, laughing now. "Alright fine! We'll probably have a fight with the water guns or something! That would be fun! Right Dipper?"
"Yeah, lots of fun." He agreed, seeming distracted suddenly. He was looking at Ford with a rather unsettling gaze, like he could suddenly read his mind. Or maybe he could? Mabel certainly hoped not, she didn't think Ford would take to that too kindly.
A few moments of silence stretched out. Mabel sipped on the apple juice, keeping a close eye on her two family members. She felt like this was important.
"I've been meaning to tell you, Dipper." Ford said suddenly. "I'm sorry for being mad at you. You didn't have control over any of this, and you're just trying to make it better."
Dipper scoffed, Mabel glanced at him, surprised at his reaction. "I'm not trying to make it better." He retorted.
Mabel felt a flash of worry strike her, what did Dipper mean?
"I'm just trying to live with it." He said. "Just like everyone else. That includes you."
Ford's face didn't betray any of his emotions, he remained smiling gently. That was when Mabel realized that they weren't being nice to each other, they were just acting like that to get answers. She was so stupid sometimes, how had she missed that? It was obvious.
"Yes we are." Ford said. "You know I'm still not used to this change."
"I think it's that you don't trust me." Dipper said nonchalantly. "Maybe I just remind of that yellow dorito too much?"
Ford actually gave a small flinch there. Mabel caught the corners of Dipper's mouth twitching up, but he quickly wiped the expression. She was starting to think that this was getting out of hand.
There was no reply from Ford for a while. "That's because you act just like Bill when I first him."
"Smarter than you, you mean?" Now Dipper was actually smiling. Mabel didn't think it looked very nice, especially with his sharper teeth.
"No, I was going to say that by acting like nothing is wrong and always acting sickeningly fine with everything."
Dipper tilted his head. "Maybe that's because I am fine with this."
Mabel had had enough, this conversation was no longer the nonchalant chat she had hoped for. "Stop it you two!"
Ford froze and glanced at her, but Dipper still had that expression on his face and didn't look at her. She put her hands on the table and scowled at the both of them.
"You both need to just calm down! Ford, Dipper isn't Bill, you can trust him, okay?" She continued when he tried to reply. "And Dipper! Stop trying to make him mad! You aren't making him trust you any!"
"I don't care if he trusts me!" Dipper hissed, eyes flashing. "He never will anyways!"
"Shut up!" She shouted. "I'm trying to help and neither of you are making this easy! At least try! Come on!"
Dipper growled and turned away. Ford sighed and looked back at his notes, remorse on his face.
"I'm sorry, Mabel." Ford said. "But he's given me so few reasons to trust me. He almost got you killed, took your soul just to save me..."
"He's just trying to help." Mabel said.
Ford sighed and looked down again. Dipper actually snorted once they stopped talking. Mabel wished that they could just trust each other. They had gotten along fine until they had gone behind Dipper's back about the rift. That was mainly her fault, she had been the one who decided to not tell him.
Finally, Dipper spoke up. "Look, we can talk about this later, Ford. You have my summoning circle, don't you?"
Ford seemed to blanch at the mention of Dipper's summoning circle. Mabel had known that Dipper had had one ever since he became a dream demon, but she had assumed it was the same one that Bill had used, minus a few changes.
"What are you talking about?" Ford asked.
"That fourth journal that you decided to start writing. Although you're still missing the others, you'll need to get those back." Dipper said, seeming pleased that he had managed to surprise Ford. "You sketched out my summoning circle on the second page, after the first page explained everything that had happened."
"How--how did you know about that?"
Dipper smiled. "I could say that I kno lots of things but I don't think you would appreciate that even if it is true."
"But you aren't omniscient like Bill was! You can't know that!"
"Hmm, not yet." Dipper said. Ford paled and reached inside his coat to pull out the journal that Mabel had seen him writing in earlier, the one with the winged star symbol on the front.
"There it it!" Dipper said, waving a finger and somehow pulling the book to him. "See? Second page, just like I said!"
He flipped to the page and showed them. There it was, a different circle then the one Mabel had used. It had the winged star in the middle, and Mabel spotted a few other familiar symbols, including hers, but all the others were different.
"What are the new ones?" She asked, but her question was only ignored.
"I only wonder where you found this circle, Sixer." Dipper said, eyeing Ford, "Not many people should know it."
"For a partly omniscient being there's a lot you don't know, Dipper." Ford said, grabbing the book back as Dipper scowled. "This was the circle used at Piedmont, I think you remember where that used to be?"
"That doesn't explain how you got it." Dipper said.
"It was on the news. Ever since you disappeared and the rift was closed, strange things have been happening all over the world. They found your summoning circle when they were looking for survivors." Ford said. "They know that a demon destroyed that town, and they showed the circle on the news. Anyone watching knows it now." He sat back and waited for Dipper's reaction.
Dipper didn't do anything, in fact. He just sat there, staring at the journal with an expression of disbelief. Mabel was starting to become even more concerned for her brother. Earlier he'd been acting like an actual demon, but now he just looked broken.
"This is my fault." He muttered. "If I'd just kept it together when they had summoned me this wouldn't be happening."
Mabel reached up to put a hand on his shoulder, but Dipper moved away. She looked at him sadly, not wanting him to pull back into himself.
"You were right Ford." Dipper said, looking up at their great uncle. "You knew I would mess up. I already did."
Ford didn't seem happy. Mabel had expected him to be happy about winning the argument, but now he just looked worried.
"Each time I've been summoned so far, nothing good has happened. Now everyone knows the circle. You don't even know who everyone for the symbols are! What if you have to stop me, but you don't have all the people of the circle?" Dread continued to spread across his face.
Mabel got up to go and hug her brother, she could tell that he needed it, but as she reached for him, he just disappeared into thin air. She turned on Ford and stared at him.
"Where'd he go?"
"I don't know, Mabel. But if he stays away too long he'll get a summons, and he's not used to them enough yet in order to ignore them." He grabbed her hand. "We have to find out where he went, come on."
She followed him to the vending machine, where he led her the third floor, with all the new stuff he had down there. If possible the room was even more full of stuff then the last time.
He pulled her to a strange machine, something that you could hold with one hand, possibly two. It resembled one of those things that people could track animals with, but this one appeared more advanced some how.
"What's this?" She asked as Ford picked it up.
"It can track a demon or anything else from anywhere. The light here," he pointed to a blue light in the side, "will flash whenever it's facing what you're looking for. It's already coded to find Dipper. Now come on."
She followed Ford back up to the Mystery Shack, and they left through the back door. It was time to find where Dipper had gone and make sure he didn't get into any trouble.
This chapter was longer then I intended for it to be, hope you enjoyed!
So yeah, stuff is gonna start to happen again! And I could totally spoil it but I won't do that.
ALSO! IMPORTANT!
Once this story is finished (there's still quite a few chapters left, don't worry) I'm not going to stop updating it. I'll add more chapters that continue the story, but there will be huge time skips and really no plot to cover a few chapters, basically just one-shots to continue the story. Some funny and some angsty.
Make sense?
Okay great!
See ya next time sheep!
