It was silent as she was left alone, standing there waiting for something to happen, and she has no doubt that Peeta must have said something to urge them into action, encouraging them to hurry just in case, and she waits, hoping for some kind of sign that indicated something was out there instead of just her imagination.
She shifted her grip, twirling her hammer, and before she has time to fully dodge a spear is hurtling towards her - cutting through her left arm, and she cries out, having no choice but to leave the smooth metal in place as Brutus is coming at her, fist flying with a knife in hand. She swings her hammer in a wide arc, creating space between them as she struggles to find a way to remove the spear while keeping him away. Her heart hammering in her chest was a tempo she used to dance out of reach and keep her going, swinging and attacking the best she could when he had the advantage.
Brutus moves in close, a hand grabbing the spear and he shoves her forward, pushing her back, and Terra uses the chance to smash the spikes into his arm sending him spiralling to the side from the strike clutching at the blood. She drops the hammer and grabs at the spear, yanking it free with a grinding of teeth and a scream and takes up her whip instead, slashing at Brutus to keep him away, ugly red lacerations showing on his bare skin, and Terra aims for his neck, trying hard to wrap the silver coil tight.
He grabs it instead, pulling it free from her hands and charges, Terra barely grabs the hammer as she rolls away, landing in a crouch with the familiar weight resting on her knee. She breathes heavy, waiting for him to make a move, but he remains still, watching her, and a shiver runs down her spine.
"Enobaria is tracking your friends right now and once I'm done with you, I'm going to take that hammer and use it to beat in Finnick's chest," Brutus sneered, taunting her, but Terra doesn't move, from her place, never one to be goaded into angry actions and recklessness.
"You can try," she tells him instead and continues to wait in place. "But if I kill you first I will take your head and mount it on your own spear as a gift to your District. Your pretty face for you them to treasure."
His lips curl and she grins at him, teasing, because both were Victors and both dradly dangerous, but she was younger and deceitfully strong, and he was older, losing the physique of his youth and always too big and slow to catch her. It would be hard and taxing, but it'll be worth keepinf her promise - and with the dark bruise forming where she had hit him, she knew he was hurt now, another hit and his arm might very well break if it wasn't aready.
Knees and joints, kidneys and head, the optimum targets for her to aim, but anything would really work well regardless. The spikes hurt and if she pulled a little she was certain it would tear his skin open something ugly.
She watches as his left leg tenses, muscles twitching, and Terra readies, swinging at him the moment his foot left the ground and she continued to push him back. He retaliated with a jab of his spear at her stomach and Terra spun out of the way, pivoting on her feet and backing up as he continued to swipe. He got closer and Terra raised her hammer, targeting the shaft, and swung down, changing his directory, she stepped on the tip and forced it into the ground as much as she could.
He moved with the motion, following his weapon, ans Terra staggered forward, aiming an upper cut with the spikes, but just barely missed as he leaned back to dodge.
Growling, Terra pushed forward and continued her downwards stroke, catching a bared few of the spikes on his chest and dragging it down along the expanse of his torso, smiling ferally as she watches him stagger, crying out and furrowing his brow. She jabbed, hitting him with the blunt end into his solar plexus and charging forward with her weight using the momentum to knock him back. His breath was knocked from him and Terra landed in his stomach with a knee to his stomach.
"Sorry, Brutus," Terra gasped, raising her hamer up and slamming it into his forehead, the resounding crack making her feel a rush of adrenaline. "But it's you or them."
She rolled off, crawling a few feet away and sprawls onto her back, breathing heavy and sighs as the canon sounds in her ears.
Theres the sound if running and the call of her name as people race in her direction, and she laughs breathlessly, looking up at the thick canopy and determinedly ignoring the sensation of trickling blood and fiery pain in her arm.
"Terra! Terra!" Finnick burst through the trees, skidding to a stop once he took in the scene. "What the hell happened?"
He dropped next to her, touching her arm gently, and she cried out, pulling away as best she could.
"Did Peeta tell you that I heard something?" She hissed, choosing to ignore her injury as he helped her sit up.
"He said you would be right back, but then you screamed again." She blinked slowly, knowing there was some kind of accusation there, but not sure of what it was.
"I was stabbed. I think I'm allowed to scream a little," she snaps, standing up unsteadily and he unties the makeshift bandage from her leg amd moves it to stand as a tourniquet.
"I know, I know," he sighs. "But you're going to give me a heart attack one day."
She smiles wistfully, allowing him his moment of hope foe the future as he leads her back towards the lightning tree, carrying her hammer for her as she slowly coils the whip.
"I told him I was going to put his head on a spike," she tells him, giggling at the absurdity of it all.
"Brutus?" Finnick looks down at her and at seeing her nod says, "Good, he deserves it."
Terra laughs brightly then, carefree as they continue to walk and he smiles his genuine dimpled smile.
When they get back Johanna and Katniss are missing, but Chaff is there, chatting happily to Peeta after having finally made his way back to people.
"What happened?" Peeta jumps up as soon as he sees her arm smeared with blood.
"Where's Katniss and Jo?" No one says anything and her blood runs cold. "Where are they?"
"They went to spool the wire to the beach," Beetee finally says and she looks to the wire, following the trail toward the beach.
"Enobaria is looking for them," she explains, grabbing the hammer from Finnick in her good arm. "Make sure that nothing happens to Beetee."
She turns to leave, an anxious twitch to her actions, but Finnick grabs her arm to stop her. "The lightning is only in an hour, it'll be done in time, but you're in no shape to go aftet her."
"Then come with me, but we have to get to her before anything goes wrong." As soon as she finishes there is a shrill scream cutting through the jungle and Peeta is dashing off, calling for Katniss.
"Go, both of you. I'll keep guard of Beetee," Chaff tells them, brows furrowed out of worry.
Terra looks back and nods jerkily before she taking off beside Finnick, his trident in hand as they chase after Peeta.
"Johanna!" He calls, going to a stop at the top of a hill and Terra races passed him, calling for Katniss and yelling for Peeta to slow down.
She could see him barreling up ahead, moving towards the sound of fightingb but by the lack of reply she could already tell that Katniss wasn't this way.
Finnick is beside her again, his trident held carefully away from her and Terra stops, reaching out to drag him with her.
"She's not over there," she pants. "You have to go find her."
"Who?" He blurts, ready to run again.
"Katniss! You have to find her Fin, but she's not this way."
"What about Peeta?" He asks and Terra glances to where he ran off to.
"I'll go after him, I'll keep him safe. He went toward Johanna anyway," she suggests, shrugging.
"I'm not leaving you alone! They'll be fine without us," Finnick argues.
"Think of her! She's the reason we're all here. Make sure she stays safe and I'll do the rest," Terra pleads, a hand pressed firmly to his chest as she leans into his touch.
Finnick looks torn, shifting his weight on his feet before grabbing her hand tight in his, placing a firm kiss to her palm. "I'll see you later, okay? Before the lightning hits the tree."
"I'll come find you," Terra swears and Finnick nods once, letting go of her hand slowly and runs toward where Katniss must have been.
She watched him go, heart heavy, and she turned back to the fighting and ran right into the waiting disaster.
Johanna was face first on the dirt and Terra raced to her, fingers desperately pressing to her throat until she felt a steady pulse. She looked around, the more fighting coming from further and realised that Peeta must have found the last Career.
"I'll be back for you, Jo, I promise." Terra shot forward, finding Peeta easily and upon seeing him underneath Enobaria with her teeth bared and a knife pressed to his throat.
Her hammer was flying through toward her before she had come to a stop, slamming into the woman's head and she crumbled to the side, crushed by the force, and Terra sighed heavily, the canon echoing around her and dropped to the ground.
With the Careers gone there was no more threats to Katniss, her mission complete with that horrible sound and she looked to the dark sky with a deep, consuming relief, hoping Haymitch was watching her fulfill her promise to him and the rebellion. She hoped to at least be considered a hero or a martyr of some sort for their cause after having helped deliver the Mockingjay to them.
The sky began to get lighter, clouds were forming above them, grey and full of lights flashing within, and Terra forced herself up - gaping as she went and realised that something must have been happening because it wasn't 12 yet, wasn't time for the tree.
She crawled to Peeta, shaking him to get his attention and whatever daze he was in broke as he jolted.
"Come on, we need to find the others," she told him, trying her best to help him up as she was.
They staggered, each supporting the other as they moved toward Johanna where she had been knocked out.
"The sky," Peeta breathed, looking up.
"I know, it's early. We need to go," she explained. "Help me get her up."
Together they reached down, hoisting her up with grunts, and Peeta took most of her weight as he started to regain control of himself again.
It was almost as though everything was in slow motion. Her grip on Johanna loosened with the crack and she watched as the bolt of electricity came from the sky, clear and slow, striking the tree that burst to life with a brilliant, blinding light, and as she squinted through the haze, there was an arrow on fire shooting into the sky - and the world seemed to just explode.
There was a flicker and a surge that shook the ground, knocking them back and Terra could hear a beeping coming from her arm - a little blue light beeping under her skin that jolted her nerves.
The last thing Terra saw was a hole in the top of the arena blown out and crumbling to the ground.
