part sixteen

another update on Jason day?? you bet your bottom britches! i got a boat load of inspiration for this story and i want to use that before its gone!

The two thieves sat on the rooftop of the Gotham Museum of Antiquities looking in through the sky light. Catwoman leaned back on her heels, turning to her son as she pulled her goggles off to look at him. Chuckling, the older thief shook her head slightly. "You want to run that by me again?"

Magpie pouted, crossing his arms over his chest defiantly. "Not if you're going to make fun of me."

Catwoman reigned in her laughter, looking at her protégé seriously. "I won't make fun of you, I promise."

Sighing, the young teen launched into his theory once more. " - and that is why I believe Tim Drake is Robin."

Humming, Catwoman pulled her goggles on once more. She sharpened her claws and reached for the sky light, her eyes on her work but her attention on her son. "So, basically, you have been trying to figure out Robin's identity out of spite since the day he rescued - "

"Ruined an operation of mine. "

" - you from the Black Mask goons and since he and Tim share the overwhelmingly rare ability to get under your skin - "

"I'm very tolerant of annoyances."

" - you latched onto the idea that they are the same person and decided to prove your theory by stealing Tim's phone and breaking into it for evidence that they are one and the same, only to come to startling realization that if he were Robin, he would have a separate phone and not use his civilian one for Robin business." Catwoman finished her summary at the same time as her glass cutting endeavors. She lifted the glass, placing it down next to her on the roof. Looking up at Magpie, she arched a brow under her goggles. "Did I miss anything?"

He huffed. "You missed the key detail that I discovered Robin-esque information on his civilian phone - which I know he planted afterwards through satellite software to throw me off his trail  - further solidifying the fact that he is Robin."

Catwoman clucked her tongue, attaching a rappelling rope to her belt and Magpie's. She checked the carabiners before nodding curtly. "I still believe that Tim is innocent until he himself admits to being Robin or Robin himself is unmasked."

Magpie groaned, rappelling into the museum after his mom. "That is such a polite way of saying I'm full of shi - "

"Hush." Catwoman spoke softly, landing on the ground next to her son. She looked around the room, pointing silently at the glass case on the far wall.

Getting the hint, Magpie detached the carabiner from his belt and made his way over to the case, his mom following closely behind. As he walked, the young thief saw something from the corner of his eye and paused. He motioned silently to his mentor that he would be right back and she nodded, knowing the instinct and urge he felt was nigh irresistible.

Continuing on with their original plan, Catwoman extracted their prize the glass case with little effort, turning around to see her son standing there with a smirk on his face and the pouch he wore around his waist full. She smiled at him, patting his head as she passed to go to the carabiners.

Once back on the roof, Catwoman turned to Magpie with a huge smile as she replaced the glass she had previously displaced. "Well done, kitten. That was the quietest you have ever been on a heist."

The teen rolled his eyes, remembering what was in the pouch he carried. "I have a surprise for you when we get back home."

Catwoman kissed the top of Magpie's head before cleaning up their supplies. "Well, let's head home, shall we?"

Once their supplies were cleaned up and any trace of them ever having been there - besides the missing antiquities - was scrubbed clean, the thieving duo started to make their way back to their home.

But, of course, this was Gotham and no crime goes unnoticed by the big bad Batman and his colorful traffic light of a partner.

Magpie rolled his eyes when he saw Batman and Robin lurking in the shadows on the next roof over, waiting to ambush them. He grabbed Catwoman's arm, whispering lowly to her. "Act natural, we may have a situation on our hands."

She hummed. "Eleven o'clock, right?" He squeezed her arm to let her know she was correct. "Alright, well, let's proceed normally. Handle them like always?"

Huffing, Magpie retracted his arm. "You mean you take them on and I run away with the goods?"

"Precisely."

With a grumble and a kick to an innocent roof pebble, the protégé followed his mentor to certain confrontation, knowing he wasn't going to be getting a piece of the action.

Sure enough, as soon as they stepped onto the same roof as the heroes, Batman and Robin stepped out of the shadows with scowls under the cowls. Magpie scoffed at the rhyme.  Scowl under the cowl...ha.

Must've been the wrong move because it attracted Batman's attention to him. "You think this is a joke, Magpie?"

"Honestly? Kind of. I mean, look at us. A couple of probably mentally unsound individuals dressed up as animals on a roof about to beat the snot out of each other for a difference in morals." He snorted. "It's like a high budget, gadget filled, mini convention for Gotham's most attractive fur - "

"Magpie."

"Hm?"

"Quiet now." Catwoman could hardly contain the amused smirk on her face at her son's mini tangent. She elected to ignore his muttered 'you know I'm right' and turn her attention to Batman, her lips slightly pursed. "Well, Batman, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

He grunted. "You know why I'm here, Catwoman." He gestured to the bag on her back. "Put what you stole, back."

"I don't think so, tall, bat, and handsome." Catwoman purred, making Magpie fake gag.

"You know how this ends." Robin sighed, exasperated. "You'll end up in prison and your little sidekick will go to juvie - unless you put back what you stole, now."

Catwoman strutted up to Batman slowly, putting  a hand on his chest as she grinned up at him, batting her lashes beneath her goggles. "Would you really but little harmless me behind bars, Batman? Think of all the fun we could have instead."

Magpie knew this was his mom's way of buying him time - but did she really have to be so gross about it? Right in front of her kid and everything! Come on!

With a shudder, the young thief dashed at Catwoman, snagging the bag that now hung loosely off her shoulders on the first try. He turned to be met with a swing from Robin, ducking under it in the nick of time. "Woah, bird brain! Watch it!"

"Funny, calling me bird brain when you also have a bird name." Robin snarked, going to strike once more. "And another thing, why do you have a bird name when you are clearly going for a cat theme?"

"Uh, I'm a thief." Magpie rolled his eyes, kicking Robin in the chest and sending the teen backwards.

"Yes, that much is obvious. Still doesn't explain anything."

"And you yourself said that there already was a Magpie. So, being the thief I am, I stole another thief's name and made it my own." He shrugged, hitting Robin with an upper cut.

"Doesn't explain the disconnect between your name and your outfit." Robin smirked, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "You'll confuse the children, you know."

Magpie blinked. "What children? What are you talking about?"

"Merchandising, for when you inevitably turn to my side." Robin used Magpie's confusion to his advantage, swiping his legs out from under him. He hit the roof, hard, shaking his head as Robin jumped on top of him, straddling him. Robin lifted his fist, holding it ready to strike at a moment's notice. "Hand over the stolen antiquities."

Magpie smirked up at him, sitting up on his elbows. "We have got to stop ending up in this position, Drake."

Robin faltered for a moment.

Bingo.

Magpie lifted one of his legs and stretched it across Robin's chest, pushing down and kicking the boy wonder off of his body. He stood up, brushing himself off and checking to make sure he still had the prizes. With a wink at the groaning Robin, Magpie was off and running towards his apartment, the sounds of his mom fighting Batman slowly fading into the night.

It was about forty three minutes and seven seconds later - Jason knows because he always times exactly how long it takes Selina to make it back from a fight with Batman, she said if takes more than forty five minutes that she was taken into custody - when Selina climbed i through the window to find Jason pacing the living room, still in his Magpie get up.

When he saw his mom, relief flooded his system and he rushed her, pulling her into a tight hug. Selina returned it, hugging her son back with a small chuckle escaping her lips. "How much time did I have to spare?"

"One minute and fifty three seconds." Jason mumbled into her shoulder.

"Oh, kitten..." She sighed, pulling out of the hug to place her hands on his cheeks. "I'm sorry I worried you."

He smiled at her. "Its fine, mom. Hey, I have that surprise for you." He knelt down next to the pouch full of goodies, rummaging through them. Selina knelt next to him, a curious look on her face. "Aha! Here it is."

Jason pulled out a layered diamond necklace, holding it out to Selina with a shy look. She gasped. "Aw, kitten, it's beautiful!"

He bit his lip. "D'you like it?" She nodded, taking it from Jason's offering hands. "I got it for you for our next adventure at a gala."

Selina smiled, pulling Jason back into hug. "Thank you, love. You are too sweet."

"I have the best mentor, after all."
