part five

I have exciting news! This book has gained a co-author! The amazing MsWatermelon12 has joined me in writing this story! The book will stay published here to avoid confusion, but everyone go give MsWatermelon12 a follow and a huge thanks!

Anyways, she wrote some of this chapter, so thank you!

Patience, Jason decided, was boring. As he stared out the window of the apartment, he wondered just how long a heist that was supposedly a 'piece of cake' could take. With a sigh, he turned from the window and grabbed the jacket Selina had bought for him. There was no way he was just going to sit there and do nothing for the next hour or so while she was out. Shrugging the jacket on, Jason wrote a hasty note explaining why he was gone and left for the streets.

Jason wondered why he'd thought the streets would be any more entertaining than the apartment. Sure, he could pick pockets, but any money he'd get from that paled in comparison to what he knew Selina would be bringing back later that night.

Still, Jason told himself, it's not like you have anything better to do.

He managed to snag four wallets, two watches, and a cell phone before he saw it. A glint of gold peeking out from a surprisingly well dressed man's sleeve. Jason knew that there was something off about this situation immediately. The only reason somebody with that kind of money would be in that part of town was if Bruce Wayne was looking for another orphan to adopt.

Jason snorted at that notion, trailing the man at a distance. Despite his ill feelings towards the situation, this was an opportunity he just could not pass up. So he continued to follow the man, making sure to keep a healthy amount of space between the two of them so as to not rouse suspicion. He saw the man with the glinted gold wrist turn a corner to a less well lit part of Gotham, cursing under his breath.

Jason followed in the man's footsteps, turning the corner himself and ignoring his instincts that screamed at him to turn back and head for the safety of Selina's apartment.

As he turned the corner, a fist swung at him. Jason acted on instinct, ducking under the fist before it had a chance to connect with his face. He looked at his would be attacker, seeing another man standing in front of the well dressed one he was tailing. The attacker grunted, cracking his knuckles as the man in the suit smiled a slimy grin at Jason. "Your greed is going to be your downfall, boy. Gentlemen, grab him."

Gentlemen? Jason furrowed his brow, only seeing the one thug. He felt two pairs of hands grab hold of his arms and tensed, looking over his shoulder to see two more brutes step out of the shadows. Fighting against their grips on him, Jason's eyes narrowed as the group of men pulled him towards the closest alleyway, away from prying eyes. Not that anyone would intervene.

"Alright, kid. Give us the goods you've snatched." Jason raised a brow at the well dressed man, who chuckled in response. "We've been watching you all evening, we know you have some goodies stashed away on your person. Why do you think we lured you into this little get together? To have tea and crumpets? Ha! Now, we can do this the easy way or we can do this the messy way. Your choice."

Jason smirked at the man. "How 'bout you buzz off?"

The man glared at the young teen. "Not an option."

"Sure it is."

The men holding Jason's biceps were too busy chuckling to notice their captive bending his arms upward, his pointer and middle fingers extended as he swung his arms harshly at the men's faces. He poked them in their eyes, striking fast and rough, causing the men to release him with a cry of pain and shock as they grabbed their faces.

Jason turned to the other two men just in time to grab the thug's arm as he swung a punch at the boy, using his momentum to twirl him around and swing him into the well dressed man, knocking them both to the ground.

Grinning as the fight was looking like it was in his favor, Jason spun on his heel to run out of the alleyway, only to be met with a barrel of a gun staring him down. "Alright, son, you've had your fun. Hand over the stuff you stole and we'll make it painless."

"How 'bout you go to hell?" Jason snarled, his heart thudding in his chest.

The brute with the gun clicked the safety off and put his finger on the trigger. "You asked for it."

"I don't think he did." Jason and the men looked up to see the (in)famous Robin swing down and kick the gun out of the man's hand. "Picking on a minor, you guys should be ashamed. Don't criminals have standards anymore?"

Jason rolled his eyes at the banter, noticing the man in the suit trying to escape the fray. He narrowed his eyes, leaping over a trash barrel and tackling the man. He sat on his chest with a triumphant smirk. "Where do you think you're going? The party's just starting. And I believe you have something of mine."

"My boss won't take too kindly to some kid stealing from him, y'know."

"You know what they say about snitches, mister." Jason slipped the watch off the man's wrist after making sure Robin wasn't looking, tucking it in his pocket. "Don't tell him I was here, say Robin took it as evidence or something."

"We could use someone like you. You got smarts."

"Sorry, I already got a mentor." Jason shrugged, punching the man in the face. His head bounced harshly off the cement, knocking him out. Getting off the man, Jason turned around to see Robin tying up the man's goons. Walking up to the Boy Wonder, he glared at him. "I had it handled."

Robin snorted. "Oh, yeah. It sure looked that way."

"I was about to make my move before you put your nose in my business. Like I said to them, how 'bout you buzz off?" Jason turned and started stalking out of the alley, stopping when he felt a hand on his arm. "What?"

"What they said about you having stolen goods. Is that true?" Robin narrowed his eyes under his mask.

Jason kept his cool as he answered easily. "I don't know what they are talking about. Besides, you should know better than to trust men who prey on minors. They were just looking for a justification to feel me up."

Robin retracted his hand. "Oh. Um. Do you need someone to make sure you get home safely? The streets are rough, you know."

Jason snorted. "Kid, I am the streets. I'll be fine. And next time, mind your damn business."

"You're welcome." Robin called after Jason as he turned the corner out onto the streets.

Jason took a very convoluted path back to the apartment, making sure Robin wasn't tailing him before he entered the building. He waited until he was safely inside and the doors were locked securely before he turned the lights on, nearly jumping out of his skin when he saw Selina sitting on the couch in her Catwoman suit, holding the note. She looked up at Jason, a relieved smile on her face when she saw no sign of injury.

"How were the streets, kitten?" She asked, watching as he unloaded his treasures onto the table. She nodded in approval. "Anyone give you any trouble?"

Jason debated telling her about his almost shake down. "Nah, nothing. Now, if I remember correctly, you owe me a movie night."

Selina laughed, walking towards her bedroom. "That I do. Just let me change into my cozy clothes. Pick the movie and I'll get some snacks, alright?"

Hours later the two thieves were passed out on the couch, blankets thrown haphazardly over themselves as a long forgotten movie played on the television.
