11 | Malfunction

Selene stepped onto the podship, heading immediately towards one of the passenger seats. Podships weren't usually meant for more than three people, but the ones belonging to the crown were much larger on the inside than they were on the outside, fitted with luxury seats and refreshments. Selene fitted the complex seatbelt system over her head and buckled it, yanking expertly at all the straps to make sure they were positioned correctly.

Winter and Thaumaturges Mira and Park followed along with three black-coated thaumaturges. The door hissed closed, and everybody silently fastened their seatbelts. Everybody seemed surprised that Selene had decided to sit in one of the regular seats instead of the ones set aside for the royal family's private use. Selene prefered to be safe rather than comfortable, though.

The pilot in the sectioned off front part of the ship switched on the engine, the signal for the hangar workers to open the dock door. The pilot slowly moved the podship forward, nudging it out into space. They had left Luna at earthrise, so the vast planet hovered in front of them, the clouds in the atmosphere swirling visibly. Selene smiles slightly as she looked down on her destination, the huge continent known as the Eastern Commonwealth. Her childhood Earthen geography lessons had paid off well. She could recognize the Province of Japan, the American Republic and parts of the European Federatiom from where the ship was located. The podship drifted out toward earth smoothly, making the trip to halfway between Luna and Earth in no more than three minutes.

Suddenly, a rattling sounded in what sounded like the engine, making it sputter for a few moments before the ship started up like normal again. The pilot leaned over and said something into his radio, most likely to the ship's mechanic. The engine spluttered again and the ship lurched, throwing everyone against their seatbelts. The pilot quickly said a few things over the radio again, his brow knitted, and Selene noticed that they were still moving forward toward earth even though the pilots foot wasn't on the the pedal any longer. It looked as though the pedal were stuck. Selene exchanged a concerned glance with Winter, who was sitting near the back of the podship. The ship lurched a few more times and started going faster, heading into earth's atmosphere and picking up more speed. The pilot frantically slammed his foot down on the brake again and again, to no effect. The ship sailed down toward the Commonwealth, a few wires in the pilots compartment popping free and spraying sparks. Selene clutched at her seatbelt, her hair flying everywhere as the ship picked up even more speed, flying at top speed through the air toward a city full of skyscrapers. The ship approached a street, and Selene had just enough time to see dozens of citizens scream at the sky and scatter before she blacked out.
