Chapter 27 Revelation

I stifled a sigh as I absent-mindedly fiddled with the laces of my shoes. I tried to think of something, anything that I could do but came up short.

Library it is! I sighed; despite the fact that I was now accepted into the family, there was next to nothing happening in these headquarters of theirs. I still had no idea where we were, apparently that’s the entire point of it, only those who operate the transport system have an inkling of where it is, this was all to avoid an attack.

The other thing about the headquarters was that there was next to nothing to do. It was only meant for a coordination center and office for the family, with living quarters separated into working personnel, temporary stay, elders and training sector.

I was placed in the training sector, also known as youth section. A grimace appeared as I remembered the others who lived there. Gerald seemed hell bent on the idea of us two bringing de Silver to a new height and kept ambushing me everywhere. I had learned to avoid him like a plague but it had not been easy. When Wayne was still here he had helped me fend him off, diverting the attention with his many jokes and anecdotes. John and Jenny found the whole thing hilarious and would just burst out laughing after, however all three of them had already set off for another mission.

Since social spaces had become off limits, I resorted to hiding in the library. It was the only place I could go to avoid talking to Gerald, seeing as the library was a place of silence. It was the only place apart from my room and the classrooms where I could find peace.

Lynette, being her usual self had put me into history classes on the family history and POE world meant for youngsters of the family. On the bright side the classes were actually held elsewhere and all I had to do was watch live streaming of it in an empty classroom, and it was actually pretty fascinating.

I began to learn more and more about Akram de Silver and his rise to fame. I found it strange how I had never heard of him in the POE Academy at all; if all the things that he had done were true, why was he not documented outside of the family?

The interesting thing I learned was that Akram not only had a brother, he also had an older sister named Ariella but she was only mentioned fleetingly. When I checked the family tree in the main hall it showed that she was never married, but had a son named Louis who was Gerald’s ancestor (it got really hard to trace at my generation now since they were alive three hundred years ago) and I was actually a direct descendant of Akram himself.

The more I learned about the POE world, the more awed I was at how they had kept it completely isolated from the civilians. Whilst there were still not many of us, the numbers had been steadily increasing for the last century and despite the peace treaty we had with the UGE it was not a peaceful world itself. There were plenty of feuds and accidents all over the world, although never one as bad as the recent events; but still, a case of a newborn POE annihilating an entire hospital was not something you could just hide.

Wandering around the library I decided I would continue to explore the place. It was situated at the southernmost corner of the headquarters and the largest library I had ever visited, even surpassing that of the POE Academy. I had found books from the Old Age to POE-authored books and whilst the cataloging was not perfect, it was an amazing place to just hide and explore.

I was looking through the dusty old shelf in a particularly deserted corner when I came across an old wooden box. It looked extremely plain and ordinary; not something that fit in with the library. Looking at it curiously I unlatched the simple lock holding it together and saw three thumb drives inside.

Each thumb drive was labelled and my heart skipped a beat when I noticed one of them had my name on it. As far as I knew, I was the only one in the family history who was named Abigail (being not in the close circle when I was born). The other two were labelled Margot and Leon; both names were not infrequent in the family tree.

Taking out the one labelled with my name I slipped it into the pocket of my jeans surreptitiously. Putting the box back into its hidden corner I found my way to the computer lab.

Making sure no one else was in the vicinity I inserted the drive and waited for it to load. Immediately a window popped up and there was only a video file inside. Again this was labelled with my name.

Curiously I opened it and a familiar face popped into view. I gasped as the young man that I had heard so much about smiled at me through the screen, and through three hundred years.

“Hi.” The legend said; his dark eyes twinkled and he ran a hand through his unruly mane of curly dark hair. We actually looked quite alike despite being what, thirteen generations apart. “I am Akram de Sliver.” I sucked in a huge breath at that; I expected it, but seeing him on video talking to me was a completely different scenario. How did he know about me? We were three hundred years apart! There were so many possibilities in between that one little thing could have meant that I was never born!

“Katarina told me you would come, one day.” He said, smiling into the screen in an earnest way. “It would have been either you, Margot or Leon.” He continued and I remembered the other two names in the box. So he wasn’t sure.

“You are a child of a descendent of me, and one of Victoria.” He smiled ruefully at the screen, as if remembering a private joke. “You inherited both of our mutations giving you more power in a single individual than we had ever seen before; surpassing even the Ganesh family. However, the time that you are born into is not at peace. There are dangers ahead and for the world to survive, it’s up to you to do something.”

I began to shiver as Akram continued talking. Whilst I was aware that I am a powerful POE, being told that you are probably the most powerful one alive and that you are responsible for saving the world wasn’t really what I expected when I woke up today. I could feel the weight of his words and I knew that if he had made a video three hundred years ago just to talk to me about this; it was a very important matter.

Akram paused and I checked to see if I had accidentally stopped the video but the glimpse of a beautiful blond behind him told me that it was still running. I ogled slightly at the face of Anastasia; she was gorgeous, the photo did not do her justice. Akram turned around and gave her a reassuring smile but I could detect a hint of sadness.

“You have no idea how lucky you are.” He said suddenly, his hand resting on his forehead and his eyes unfocused. “The world you live in now holds so much more promise; a future that we are fighting to secure now, a future that I will never know but hope to exist.”

I tried not to tear up as I watched the hero sighing. He was right; I had no idea what it was like in the Dark Ages. It must had been a terrible time with no law and living life on a day to day basis and counting your blessings for making it through to the next day. Sure, the glories of the Originals were sung, but how many unknown heroes had fought and died in their quest  to secure the future we had today.

Bolting up, I suddenly realised something. Victoria. Akram had just mentioned the name like she was an old friend and the only Victoria I could think of from the era was Victorian Balikova, Mr. Andrewson’s ancestor. He had also mentioned Katarina as though he knew her personally. Was he friends with the Originals? How come we never heard of him?

“I am sorry.” He said, straightening up. “I made this video to prepare you for what is to come, not to pity myself. There is a war coming. A war that could tear the world apart; not everyone is ready to accept POEs.”

A dark shadow crossed his face on the last sentence and I shivered again. I had a feeling Akram wasn’t the kind to take discrimination against POEs lightly. “You need to train in the family and find Katarina.” He said, I could hear the sound of paper crumbling as he held up a neatly folded note stamped by the de Silver family crest.

“I have left this in a hidden compartment of the box.” He said, lifting the wooden box to reveal a secret panel and putting the note inside then sealing it. “Bring it to Katarina. She will understand.”

My mind was reeling by this point. How was I, Abigail Beckett supposed to save the world? I had been thrust into this world for almost two years and spent half the time running away from mysterious bad guys with an unclear agenda. I was miles away from home, had no way of contacting my mentor and stuck in a place with my new-found family with a psychopath convinced that we were meant for each other and my boyfriend out there with his life hanging by a thread. I couldn’t do this. Not on my own.

“Abigail.” Akram called and my attention immediately focused back to the screen. As I stared into his face I felt a sense of calm wash over me. Yes, the situation is tough, but this guy, this legend, my ancestor had taken the time to make a video to warn me three hundred years ago whilst he was in the midst of an even more terrifying battle. He was giving me the guidance and help that he never had. He was putting his legacy on me and the least I could do was to live up to the family name.

“I know this is a lot to ask for.” He continued, staring earnestly at me. “It is not a burden that I would wish upon anyone. But if Katarina’s prediction did not change, everything we had worked so hard for would be washed away by this string of events.”

Gnawing on my lips I nodded, even though the guy that was talking to me was long gone. “Although I never liked the name POE,” Akram said, chuckling to himself, “We are the ones with the power to protect the world, and I would hate to see us go down the same route as our ancestors did.”

“Good luck Abigail.” Akram said, giving me a dashing smile. “And for the record.” He added with a wry smile, as if he knew he shouldn’t say it and my heartbeat quickened. “I am glad it’s you.”

Just like that, the screen turned black and I let out a deep breath. With shaking hands I retrieved the thumb drive and made sure I deleted all traces of my activities on the computer.

With a renewed sense of urgency I found my way back to the dusty shelves and pocked the wooden box. It was probably best if I kept it out of reach, although it didn’t appear as though anyone had found it before, which was some kind of miracle.

Speed walking back to my room I slammed the door shut and made sure I locked it properly before taking the box out. I carefully opened the box and searched for the hidden compartment that Akram had shown me on the video and with a sigh of relief, lifted out the note. It had a wax seal on with the de Silver crest stamped across and I wondered what he wrote inside that he couldn’t tell Katarina straight away three hundred years ago. I shuddered to think of even living that long.

Feeling overwhelmed I collapsed onto my bed still clutching onto the note. Rubbing my face with my other hand I contemplated my best course of action. Tell Lynette? She would be overjoyed that her granddaughter was part of the bigger picture and that would suffocate me. but what could I do if I didn’t tell her… I couldn’t very well go around compelling everyone, I wasn’t even sure how long or how much I could do it.

At that very moment I wished Tom was here, then I could consult him on this matter and he would know exactly what to do; or Evanna, with her power and wisdom. Nate would comfort me and tell me that everything will be alright. Casey would snort and said that she did not believe a single word of a three hundred year old video. Owen would smile at me encouragingly and Holly would pat my shoulder to show support. Natalie would have given me a hug and Oscar would probably not say anything. Heck, even Fred’s teasing on how I would end up destroying the world is preferable than this.

Burying my face in my hands I hoped that everyone was okay, wherever they were. This was only the beginning, I told myself as I snuggled into my bed. If I don’t stop what was about to happen next, then this would happen to everyone I have ever known.

At some point during my pity party I must have fallen asleep. The next thing I knew I was tangled in my sheets and a sheen of sweat had precipitated on my forehead. I jolted, confused and startled I detangled myself and something fell off from the bed.

Reaching down to pick it up, as soon as my eyes focused on the object I knew exactly what to do. It wasn’t a good plan, but it was the only one I had.

 -------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone! I am so excited for this chapter that it is probably the favorite of the entire chronicles so far. This is the big deep plot that I had been planning since the beginning of the book and I am SO SO SO happy that I had finally got around to revealing it.

Lots of you had thought Lynette was central to my plot - but now I guess you can see that she was never as important as persumed (I had to admitt I was very giddy when people started guessing about her - because it is SO NOT)

He would be the protagonist in the prequel which hopefully I would get around to writing soon!

I don't know when I can next update - because I had little time for internet/laptop use in Greece at the moment. The volunteering experience had been great so far and I had made some great friends, and the condtion of the sea turtle nesting beaches here are just appaling!

I am toying with the idea of writing a story on my experience, with a few twists added of course.

Is there some holiday romance going on? hm....I don't know yet :P

PS, ask.fm me!, and let me know what you think of the chapter, because I CAN'T wait to hear your reactions
