ii. the mysterious woman

If she knew that finding Uhtred would lead her to Skade, she wouldn't have bothered to save him. She was expecting a blonde, yes, but not that cunt of a seer.

She watched the Irishman plead for his friend to fight the curse and if she had a warm heart, she would feel sympathy for the man. She noticed a monk and another man sitting by the fire watching with sadness at his friends, behind them sat her past mistake.

Skade.

Sigrún wasn't one for the passions of flesh but she allowed herself to experience it at least once, which led her to Skade. The experience wasn't bad it was surprisingly pleasurable. The seer knew how to use her mouth and Sigrún hadn't complained, the downside was that Skade became obsessed with her. So one night while Skade slept, she walked out on her and their little fling.

"This is Uhtred?" She asked leaning against a tree, her snake curled around her throat protectively. She must have looked like an omen. With her staff made of human bones and her black cloak hiding her face, she nearly laughed at the fear on their faces. The Dane and monk unsheathed their swords and watched her cautiously as she walked closer. "I must say, I expected more from him." She hummed and kneeled next to the man.

"Do not touch him." The Irishman hissed in warning, she laughed at his attempt to intimidate her and turned Uhtred's head to face her. She sat her staff beside her as Seidr curled around it protectively.

"Uhtred," She whispered and the man blinked at her wearily. "Uhtred, follow my voice." The man continued to mumble something about a woman named Brida. She grabbed Uhtred's palm and cut a line into it with her dagger, ignoring the men and seer she licked up the fresh blood and groaned in pain.

She was pulled into Uhtred's mind and she groaned from the dizziness he was experiencing, she clutched her head and turned to an unknown male. He had a sword to Uhtred and shouted cruel things at him. The Saxon turned to her with a cold gaze and she felt the curse hesitate at the sight of her.

"Who are you?" She replied coldly and smirked when the man paused.

"Who is she, arseling?" The man sneered and glanced Uhtred's way.

"I believe I asked you first." She placed a hand on Uhtred's heart and absorbed some of the darkness. Uhtred watched in concern as her veins turned black with each piece of the darkness she consumed.

"Leofric." Uhtred mumbled.

"He is not real, Uhtred. Repeat after me. He is not real." She said soothingly.

"He is not real. He is not real." He muttered and Sigrún smirked at the spirit when he started to fade from Uhtred's consciousness.

"Anytime he visits, repeat that motto."

"What are you doing? Sihtric, what is she doing?" The monk asked terrified seeing her eyes roll back until only the white of her eyes showed.

"She's seeking out his future." Sihtric answered completely amazed, he watched the raven-haired woman mumble an incantation. Sigrún fought off the virus that was Skade and felt blood flow from her nose, based on the horrified look of the Irishman it must have been black.

"He will survive." She replied and leaned over Uhtred gasping for air. She turned to look at Skade who had stood at the sight of her, her lips curled up in a vicious snarl. She used her cloak sleeve to wipe away the cursed blood and glanced at Uhtred.

"She has come for me, my destiny." Skade claimed and Sigrún rolled her eyes.

"Someone shut her up, please." She mumbled and noticed a new woman had approached.

"Finan." Sihtric had called, once Finan turned they saw Uhtred's ex-lover standing behind him.

"I am here." The brunette woman said and looked at her in shock. "Lady Sigrún, it is an honor." The woman said and bowed, Sigrún guided her back to her standing stance.

"Not now, focus on Uhtred."

Sigrún could admit that Ragnar and Brida were surprisingly respectful to her as she awaited Uhtred's return, she had made him tea to help soothe his nightmares. Now, the man was eating and acting as if he hadn't tempted fate.

"Good?" Ragnar asks watching his brother eat, Sigrún sits next to him Uhtred as she feeds the snake bits of meat.

"It is good." Uhtred replies with a smile as Brida sits down with a smile of her own, Uhtred glances at the woman that saved him cautiously.

"We thought you gone." Finan said and watched them.

"The same, I fear I'd die an old man's death, under furs." Uhtred spoke. "I have you to thank." He said turning to Sigrún. She waved him off with a grimace, she wasn't much of a people person.

"I am simply here to be your protector, Uhtred. There is no need to thank me." She replied and narrowed her eyes at a redheaded man who approached them.

"So the great Dane-slayer was afraid?"

"You are who?" Uhtred asked watching fearfully as her snake slithered from her hand and onto the table.

"He's no one important, Uhtred." Brida informed with a grin.

"I am Cnut."

"You are what?" Finan spoke making Sigrún glance his way.

"He is Cnut, he's my cousin on my mother's side." Ragnar said before noticing the snake was curled up and focused on Cnut.

"I'm a Dane, lord Uhtred. So are you gonna kill me too?" Cnut taunted.

"You talk like an infant." Uhtred said instead.

"How many of us have you really dispatched to Valhalla? Is it twelve? Twenty? Forty?"

"Cnut, you'll shut your mouth. Now show my brother some respect." The snake hissed at the red-headed man and Sigrún propped her elbows on the table when it lunged at him.

"Forgive him, my precious boy hates cowards." She said with a sultry voice and smiled at the man viciously.

"Or I may have to kill one more." Uhtred teased to lighten the mood and watched Ragnar laugh.

"He's back! He's back! Get up. Upon your feet! Get up!" Ragnar says happily, Finan looks at them with a smile as Uhtred stands. "He's back where he belongs. Where he has always belonged, you're a Dane for life now. Say it!" Ragnar says happily.

"I am a Dane for life." Uhtred says softly.

"No, say it." They began to thump their fists on the tables.

"I am a Dane for life." She and Finan look at one another.

"Mean it!"

"I am a Dane for life! From this day onwards." Ragnar pulls his brother into a hug.

"This means everything to me." He says softly to Uhtred, as the men cheer she notices Finan growing quiet. Perhaps, she and the Irishman would be the only source of intelligence when it came to Uhtred.
