08. breaking curfew

"OI, LILLY!" His voice ricocheted off the stones in the hall.

She scowled. Lillian was already running late to the dormitories, and she couldn't stop to talk to Teddy Lupin for the third time that day.

"Lilly, my dear, please wait for me!"

She stopped, turning on her heel in a huff. She crossed her arms tightly across her chest, staring him down as he sprinted toward her.

"What do you want blue-haired boy?" She asked, looking up at him as he came to a stop in front of her.

"I want you to come with me."

"Right now? It's almost curfew, and you know what happens if we get caught!"

He grabbed her wrist, loosening the tightened grip she had on her own body, and pulled her back down the corridor they had come from.

"If we get caught, I'll make sure all the blame falls on me. I am the Head Boy, after all."

Lillian rolled her eyes, her discomfort and anger at the situation growing faster by the second. She could feel her face burning red, her stomach tossing and turning as she rounded another corridor to one of the castle entrances. The wooden door creaked open and they ran out, the cold biting at the parts of her body that weren't covered by clothing. Tears formed in her eyes as they ran through the wind, running toward the Great Lake.

They slowed to a jog, and then stood next to one of the bushes surrounding it. In the spring, the bush was full of red berries, but it had started to die as winter approached.

"What could you possibly want from me, especially this late at night?" She questioned, her voice an angry whisper.

"I wanted to spend some time with my favorite temperamental redhead."

Teddy shrugged, sitting down behind the bush and leaning back.

"It's way too cold out here, I'm walking back to the castle. I can still make it to the dormitory in time if I hurry."

As she started to walk away, she felt him tug at her robes. Lillian turned her head, glancing down at the seventh year who had, once again, changed his hair to her shade of red.

"Sit with me for a little bit, it'll be okay."

She sighed, dropping down on to the ground across from him. The grass had accumulated some dew and was chilly to sit on, but she tucked her robe under her and pulled her legs in as close as she could to conserve warmth. Teddy was staring at the black sky above them, biting on his lower lip.

When she looked up, she saw the stars slowly fading into view, making their existence known. An extremely bright star faded in above Teddy, the shine of it the brightest Lillian had ever seen.

When she looked back down, she saw Teddy staring at her, almost seeming distracted.

"What are you looking at?"

Teddy jumped, adverting his eyes to stare at the bush sitting in front of them.

"Uh... nothing."

It was her turn to stare. Her blue eyes burned into the side of his face, and he seemed to squirm under her sight.

"Can you not look at me Lillian?"

She blinked. He hadn't used her real name in years, only referring to her by the nickname she despised.

"Lillian is your name, right?" You didn't just make that up to say I pissed you off, did you?"

"Lillian is my name, yes, you just haven't called me that in years."

He smiled, his eyes rolling upward to look at the sky again. Lillian glanced up and the sky had filled with stars, none of them fading in or out of view.

Teddy shifted closer, his breathing slow and heavy, showing up in the cool air surrounding them. She tucked her legs in closer, trying to pull the feeling of anxiety back down into the bottom of her stomach. Lillian felt it rising up her throat, where she might start sobbing, or breathing heavily, or maybe even throw up.

He rested his head on her shoulder, his breathing finally coming to a normal pace. She inhaled sharply, the cold burning her nose and throat and nearly making her cough.

They sat in silence for a while, looking up at the black sky dotted by white stars, until Teddy finally spoke.

"It's getting even colder, we should probably go back in."

"Don't forget that if we get caught I'm blaming you."

He laughed quietly, wrapping his arms around his torso to hold more warmth in.

They walked back, careful to avoid anything that would make an obvious noise to alert Filch or any professors. A large snowy owl hooted overhead, making Lillian jump a few inches off the ground. She walked faster after that, not bothering to jump over the stray tree branches or crunchy leaves that laid on the ground.

The wooden door they had exited from creaked open, much quieter this time, as they crept in.

It was hard to avoid making any noise inside the castle. The stone corridors echoed every sound that was made, even if you thought you put your foot down as light as you could.

Somehow, they had made it back safely, standing outside the barrel door that led to the Common Room. Lillian knocked on it, the door opening itself and letting the two in.

"Thank you for a chilly night under the stars, Lupin."

"You're more than welcome, Lilly."

Her heart sank at the sound of him bringing back her nickname. She had hoped they were at a turning point, where he would finally call her by her real name.

She shook her head, knocking the thought out. They had at least made an improvement tonight.

"Have a good rest." He had moved in front of her, heading toward the boy's dormitory.

"You too, Teddy."

He nodded at her, his face a blush color. She didn't know if it was from walking in the weather or something else, but she took it as another hint when his hair stayed red, even as the door shut behind him.

Teddy had a motive, she just had to figure out what it was.
