{4} LETTERS FROM WHO?
Back at the Dursleys'. Petunia and a bundled up Dudley come in.
Petunia: [assuring a distressed Dudley] It's all right, sweetheart. It's all right.
They walk in the living room. Mia and Vernon enter. Vernon slams the door and shoves Mia against a wall, taking her hair.
The great hall fell into a collective gasp as everyone reacted to the shocking incident of Mia's uncle raising his hands against her. The audacity of such an act left people wondering how long this had been happening and how much longer it would continue.
Mia: Ow!
Vernon: WHAT HAPPENED?!
Mia: I swear, I don't know! [Vernon snarls] One minute, the glass was there and then it was gone! It was like magic!
Mia: I'm telling the truth!
Vernon scoffs at this, shoves Mia in the cupboard under the stairs and slams the door
Vernon: There's no such thing as magic! [he blackens out the vent on the door]
A heavy silence enveloped the room, leaving everyone in a state of disbelief.
Molly Weasley broke the silence, inquiring, "How long were you trapped in there?"
Mia Potter simply shrugged, she stated, "I don't know, but perhaps for days?"
Another moment of quiet filled the room. Empathy washed over everyone, transcending any differences among them. Even the Slytherins, including Draco, Blaise, and Pansy, felt a pang of sympathy for their fellow student, friend, and classmate.
An owl flies into view and lands itself on a TV aerial on one of the houses' roof Mia leaves the living room area into the hallway and picks up some letters, one of which had her name on it with his address of where she slept.
"Hogwarts letters!"
Happy tones echoed throughout the hall, and a ripple of excitement ran through the students. The words acted like a spark in a room full of dry wood; within seconds, all signs of previous apprehension were replaced with anticipation and joy. They are the witnessing the moment their hero received the letters.
The thought of receiving their personal letters from Hogwarts, the place they all longed for, filled the air with electric excitement. Mia, despite staying low, shared a glint of happiness in her eyes.
Uncle Vernon and Dudley sit at the table while Aunt Petunia is busy fixing breakfast. Mia walks in with the mail and hands it to Uncle Vernon
Vernon: [after reading a postcard] Oh, Marge is ill! Ate a funny whelk.
Mia chuckled softly upon hearing the name Marge, recalling the events from her third year. Observers who noticed her giggles looked puzzled, unsure of the reason behind her amusement.
Nonchalantly, she replied, "You'll find out in third year."
Dudley suddenly notices Mia's letter and runs to grab it from her and give it to his father.
Dudley: Dad! Look! Mia got a letter!
Mia: Hey, give it back! It's mine!
The intensity in the room was palpable as Mia's friends and family vociferously demanded on the screen,
"Give her back their letter!"
"Don't you dare touch her."
Amid the tense atmosphere, their concern for her situation was palpably evident.
Vernon: Yours? Who'd be writing to you?
Suddenly, a loud "Everyone!" echoed across the hall, diverting everyone's attention. The hall was instantly filled with murmurs and curiosity.
As the word echoed around, Mia instinctively sunk deeper into her seats. The attention of the crowd was overwhelming, so she chose to keep a low profile, blending into the crowd's increasing curiosity and apprehension.
The family gathers to look at the address. There is a broken seal on the letter. The family looks up, Mia gulps.
"He better not lay one hand on you." Sirius growled through his teeth.
Desperate worry was etched on Remus's face as he quickly looked over her. His eyes, although holding back the beast within him, softened as they landed on Mia. Sirius, clenching his jaw so tight it could crack, tried to keep his temper in check. Their message was clear: No one would be permitted to harm them without bearing the wrath of their protectors.
"He didn't hurt you, right?"
Mia smiled softly at him and nodded her head. Seeing her gentle smile and the reassuring nod of her head, Remus finally relaxed. He gave her a warm, comforting look, filled with silent understanding. It was as if a ton of weight had been lifted off their shoulders, but Sirius maintained his protective stance, knowing they were never truly safe. But for now, Mia's smile was enough.
Much later, another owl flies by with a letter and drops it off. Inside, Vernon grabs a handful of letters and rips them up. In the closet, Mia hears a whirring noise. He looks out at Vernon drilling wood over the letterbox opening.
Vernon: No more mail through this letterbox.
"I hate him so much,"
Fred and George declared, their voice full of disdain. Their words resonated with everyone, their heads nodding in agreement, their eyes reflecting a similar feeling of anger and indignation. Indeed, the consensus in the hall was unanimous. Vernon's actions had evoked a strong tide of solidarity for Mia Potter among the students and staff alike, further igniting their resentment towards him.
Mia quietly closes the cupboard door. The next day, Vernon and Petunia are outside the door. Vernon is about to head off to work. Petunia kisses his cheek.
Petunia: Have a lovely day at the office, dear.
{She stops, looks and sees a bunch of owls.}
Vernon: Shoo! Go on!
[She notices something and pats Vernon on the shoulder to get his attention, and what they see is more letters addressed to Mia.] [Much later, Vernon is tossing letters into the fireplace. Mia comes around the corner. Vernon grins evilly and tosses more in.]
"What a disgusting man!" Molly snarled at the screen, her voice seething with disgust.
The room echoed with similar sentiments. Everyone was appalled by Vernon's crude behavior. It wasn't enough that he'd resorted to mistreating Mia, now he had stooped so low as to destroy her precious letters from Hogwarts too. The disregard for their wellbeing and their hopes brought a deep and collective sense of anger among the audience.
Mia [whispers to herself]: I hate you
As the eyes of the crowd subtly shifted towards her, Mia's gaze drifted to the ground, a soft tint of dignified vulnerability in her expressions. Ron and Hermione ever protective, glared at the screen, Ron's fingers tightening around Mia's hands in silent reassurance. He glanced sideways at her, a quick, unspoken check-in. Their bond was strong, and it was evident in the comforting squeeze of his hand and the concern in his eyes. Mia responded with a nod and a small smile, she looked at Hermione snd gave her a small smile.
The scene fades to the next day, the family is sitting around, Mia is serving cookies and pouring the coffee.
"If I were in your shoes," Pansy began, her voice was intense and serious, "I would put poison in their cup."
"I have thought about it," Mia confessed, smirking just as sardonically back at Pansy, her eyes glittering with unspoken defiance. She wasn't one to be underestimated and her retaliatory spirit was stronger than ever.
Snape, taken aback by her response, raised a brow. But as shocking as her proposition was, he couldn't suppress the sardonic smirk spreading across his face. Mia's audacity almost amused him, and he had to admit, he might have considered the same course of action.
Vernon: Fine day Sunday. In my opinion, best day of the week. Why is that, Dudley?
Mia: [when Dudley shrugs and didn't answer, as she hands a cookie to Vernon] Because there's no post on Sunday?
Vernon: Ah, right you are, Mia. No post on Sunday. Ha! No blasted letters today. No, sir. Not one single bloody letter, not one. [Mia sees a shadow outside the window. Outside, millions of owls are perched.] No, sir, not one blasted, miserable- (As Vernon was talking, a letter shoots out of the fireplace and zips across Vernon's face, cutting him off.
As the letter bombarded Vernon, a wave of suppressed laughter swelled throughout the room. The chuckles were hushed, laced with a sense of satisfaction. Even among the more composed students, smirks found their way across their faces. Breaking discipline for a moment, they indulged in this unexpected lightning of tension, their hearts reveling in the sudden turn of events.
There is a rumbling and then millions of letters come shooting out of the fireplace. The family shrieks in horror as Mia watches in amazement.]
Dudley: AHH! Make it stop! Please make it stop! [He jumps on Petunia's lap as she and Vernon continue screaming] What is it? Please tell me what's happening!
The room erupted into further chuckles as they took in the dumbstruck look on Vernon's face. His unexpected confusion seemed to serve as much-needed comic relief in the room, causing smirks to turn into wide grins and stifled laughter to burst forth unabashedly. The sight was priceless, a moment of joviality that instilled a sense of shared amusement among them all.
[Mia jumps onto the coffee table to grab a letter. She gets one and starts to run away. Vernon jumps up as well.]
"Why you didn't grab one from the floor?" Someone asked her in confusion.
"I seriously have no idea."
Vernon: Go away! Ahh! Give me that! Give me that letter!
[He chases Mia and grabs her before she gets into her closet.]
Mia: Get off! Ahh!
The Great Hall was a cacophony of shouts and yells, the lively chatter amplifying the drama. Sitting quietly amidst the chaos, Amelia had been observing from the start. Her eyes, sharp and focused, caught every detail of the unfolding situation. She was now chronicling the series of events - the torment and cruelty inflicted by their aunt and uncle juxtaposed against the resilience of the youngsters who were shaping it into a tragi-comic spectacle. She penned down each detail meticulously, a silent recorder amidst the tumult.
Mia: Leave me alone, bitch!
Mia's words had brought a much-needed moment of levity amidst the tension in the room. Her spirited defense and fearless attitude had caught everyone off guard, and they couldn't help but be swept up in her laughter. Their individual worries and fears dissipated, if only for a moment, replaced by shared amusement and joy.
Hermione's shaking head gradually transformed into a fond smile, unable to resist the contagious laughter that filled the air. She realized that despite the gravity of their situation, Mia's light-heartedness reminded them all that they were still young at heart and capable of finding solace in moments of laughter and camaraderie.
Remus and Sirius exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes filled with a mixture of pride and affection. They had witnessed countless battles and struggles over the years, but seeing their friends find joy in the face of adversity always touched them deeply. It was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of friendship.
[Vernon restrains Mia as several letters begin to shoot everywhere around the house.]
Vernon: Ahh!
Mia: They're my letters! Let go of me!
[The wood plank nailed in front of the letterbox finally breaks from the excess pressure of the letters shooting through the letter.]
Vernon: That's it! We're going away! Far away! Where they can't find us!
Dudley: Daddy's gone mad, hasn't he?
Petunia watches with a horrified look on her face, knowing that Dudley may be right.
