A Perfect Fit
Chapter Seven ~ Idina
Tap. Tap. Maya and Riley gently pitter with the tips of their fingers against my window. I look up from my desk and turn my wheelie chair towards them. They motion for me to come, and I walk over and open my window up. They crawl through, and sit on the bench attached to the window.
"Hey, you have a bay window, like me!" Riley squeals. She and Maya sit on either side of me.
"Can you come over to our bay window?" Maya asks.
"I don't know," I say, pretending to be torn between staying or going with them, "What's in it for me?
"A sleepover!" Riley shouts, then she and Maya tackle me to the ground.
"We're not leaving without you!" Maya shouts playfully. I laugh, and my mother walks right in on the two tackling me.
"Who are they Idina?" Mom asks.
"Friends from school, Mom this is Riley," I introduce using my free arm to point to Riles, "and that's Maya. Riley lives in the apartment two down. Can I sleep over tonight? Please, please, please?" I ask. The girls get off me to put their hands together along with me in a begging fashion, making puppy dog eyes.
"Alright, but make sure to be back before school for breakfast," Mom says, she comes over to me and kisses me on the cheek, "Goodnight baby."
"Night Mom," I say before the girls drag me out the window. I turn to lock it behind me with my key, then put it in my purse pocket. I crawl over the fire escape to Riley's wide open window. She plops in, then Maya, then me, who closes the window.
"So, what have you called me here for tonight ladies?" I ask. They both look at each other, then back at me.
"This is a very special place to us, Idina," Riley begins.
"This is where Riley and I figure out our most important stuff," Maya ends, "and now you shall too." Riley goes over to her light purple dresser and pulls out two little boxes. She opens the first one to reveal two rings identical to her's and Maya's, carved in it reads Best Friends. She hands Maya the other still closed box.
"You have been called here for a very important ceremony. It has always been Maya and me since we were 5 years old, since the first day she came through my window," Riley proclaims, "our ring power is our most sacred vow of true friendship. Tonight, we ask you to take that vow."
"I take the most sacred vow of true friendship," I say, putting right hand over my heart. With that, Riley slips the two rings onto my left hand's middle finger, as they have it. I look down to see the first ring is silver and says Best; the second one is bronze with a hint of a pink tint and says, Friends.
"I think the silver one is Maya," I begin, still looking down at the rings, "She's solid, dark but light in a way. She's like the best, even though no one can truly really be the best because she is a sister and friend wrapped into one. She is so strong and has been through everything to the moon and back. Silver is shining, and it's moment to shine is always, like Maya." I look up at Maya and see her smiling, still holding the other box. I look at Riley and smile. I hold up my hand and point to the bronze ring.
"The bronze one is Riley. With a hint of pink, she is always so happy, bright, and carefree. It says, friends because she will always stand by her friends, and always has them. She will protect you no matter what, and light up your light with a hint of color when you need it the most."
"Profound words," Riley says, "we knew you would say something like that. Congratulations, you passed the test of true friendship. Now it's time for your reward." Maya opens the box to reveal three golden rings that say Forever.
"We have been waiting for the person who completes our triangle, the third match. We saved this ring for you. Now that you are in our lives, you will stay there forever. We know you're meant to be with us. Tonight, we all add a new ring, in honor of you, Idina." Maya says, handing each one of us a ring. We slip it on our fingers.
"I'll never take it off, except to shower," I say giggling. We put our hands in the middle together. Maya is sitting next to Riley, then myself next to Riley on the other side.
"Best," Maya starts.
"Friends," Riley says with a smile.
"Forever." I almost whisper.
"Ring power." We say in unison. A young boy suddenly runs in the room, breaking our beautiful moment, which I shall treasure always. He jumps into Maya's lap.
"Save me! I don't wanna go to bed," he shouts.
"But you gotta Auggie," Maya says, hugging him. He notices me, then marches right up to my face.
"Who dis?" He asks the girls.
"Idina, meet Auggie, my little brother. Auggie, this is our friend from school, Idina, she lives a couple apartments down." Riley explains.
"Well hello," Auggie says.
"Hey, there squirt. I'm going to call you Augs," I say, ruffling his hair. He smiles, then a women walks in the room, looking very tired.
"Auggie you need to go to bed," she says, "You must be Idina. Riley told me there was a new addition. I'm Topanga, Riley's mother."
"Hello Mrs. Matthews," I say.
"Please don't call me that, it makes me feel as old as I am," she jokes.
"Okay Topanga then. Riley's mother," I recap.
"Also my lovely wife," Mr. Matthews says standing in the white doorway then picks up Auggie and puts him on his back, "Come on Auggie, time for bed. Goodnight girls, don't be up too late," he says.
"Maya, will you come tuck me in?" Auggie asks.
"Sure kiddo," Maya says, "be back in a few." She hops off the bay window and exits after the two boys.
"Goodnight Augs! Nice to meet you Topanga!" I shout after them.
"You too Idina," She says, then shuts the door. I turn to Riley.
"So truth time, do you like Lucas?" I ask. She blushes a reddish pink.
"Is it that obvious?" she asks.
"You two might as well be in a romance movie," I joke.
"I've known how I felt about him ever since I fell into his lap on the subway on the way to school last year, the first day of seventh grade," she says, smiling as she reminisces. I snap my finger in front of her face.
"Earth to Riley? You there?" I joke. She snaps out of it and nods, moving to her bed. She plops down and I plop down beside her.
"You know, there was a time, like for a few days, when no one in our group except Lucas was truly themselves," she says, sitting up on the bed as I follow, "I was a dark depressing girl named Morotia M. Black, Farkle was some random guy he called 'Donny Barnes', and Maya was me, Riley, and she liked being me, but suddenly out of nowhere said she wanted to stop. I think she figured something out about me even I don't know about myself, but every time I ask her what she figured out she says nothing. I think she's hiding something big from me." Riley groans and lies back while I stay sitting up.
"I-," I'm about to tell her what I think Maya is hiding but stop myself. I realize what I think is that Maya likes Lucas too. But, I won't tell Riley that. I can't break up Riley and her peaches. I especially won't tell her about my crush on Lucas. Hopefully, it will fade away. Maybe Maya's will too, but I can't focus on that right now. Riley looks up at me, waiting for me to finish. I fake smile.
"I think you've got nothing to worry about Riles," I assure, "You and Peaches are as tight as ever."
"Thanks, Pookie," Riley says.
"Pookie, I like it," Maya says, standing at the door. I assume she only heard Riley thanking me, and not the rest of our conversation.
"Pumpkin, Peaches, and Pookie, the three P's ready for anything," she says hopping on the bed, "So what are we talking about?"
"Crushes," Riley says.
"So you know about Lucas then?" Maya asks me, I nod.
"So who do you like Maya?" I ask. At first she seems to tense up some, but then relaxes and acts like her normal chill self.
"Riley's Uncle Josh happens to be the object of my affections," Maya says, "and no three year age difference will keep us apart!"
"So he's 17?" I ask and they nod, "College boy yet?"
"No, but he is going to NYU next year," Maya tries to say nonchalantly, but I can still hear the excitement in her voice.
"Oooh-oooh," Riley and I say back to back playfully teasing Maya about her crush. She throws a pillow at us and sits down on the floor. We both follow, forming a circular shape. I press my back against Riley's bedframe.
"So Idina, you've been asking all the questions, now it's our turn," Maya says with revenge burning in her eyes, "Who do you like?"
"Oh, I don't know. It's only my first day..." I start, but they can tell I'm lying, so I sigh and give into the truth, "I think I really, really like Farkle. Like, a lot." I say, which is true. I'm only just leaving out the small detail of my minuscule, sort of- hopefully not really real - crush on Lucas. The girls squeal at my confession.
"He totally likes you!" Riley babbles.
"Yeah, I could tell he was jealous when Lucas looked over at you, even if it was just friendly," Maya adds.
"Okay okay, stop. Now, ring power. None of this leaves this room," I say holding up my left hand with my rings, "Got it?"
"Agreed," Riley says.
"Totally," Maya replies, "Nice use of ring power, btw," Maya adds.
"Alright, time for bed, if we don't wanna be zombies at school tomorrow," I say. We all crawl into Riley's big bed. Riley's in the middle and wraps her arms around both of us in a bear hug.
"Goodnight BFFs," She says. I grin and turn towards the bay window to sleep.
Peaches, Pumpkin, and Pookie. Silver, bronze, and gold. Best Friends Forever.
A perfect pairing.
Here's hoping it lasts...
