Chapter three
We got to the Police station after half an hour later. Walking in, I almost choked at the smell of sweat, dirt, and smoke all mixed together giving off some kind of horrible odor but Ayomide seems used to it as he led us to the counter where two young guys who couldn't be more than 20-22 sat in their black police uniform talking.
"Good morning."Ayomide said
"Morning, what can I do for you?" one of them asks.
"We are here to see detective Oloyede and also fill a complaint. We want to write a statement."He said.
"Okay, you have to pay 2000 Naira for the complaint form." he said while I opened my mouth.
"Excuse me, how will you tell me to pay just because I want to file a complaint, that's outrageous."I said
"But Ma, that's how we always do it." The police officer said again.
"Wo, leave her. When she really needs to file a complaint, she will pay and if she likes she shouldn't." The other one said to the one conversing with us not even bothering to lower his voice.
"Excuse me Mr. Are you referring to me? Since when do police officers collect money just for filing a complaint, if you know you do not know how to speak it will be better for you to keep shut okay."I said my sadness turning into anger which was preparing to leak.
"That's how people pay it." He said
"That is not how it is supposed to be, I won't tolerate corruption or any form of bribery. You guys just made it compulsory as a way of exploiting people!" I lashed out
"Hey hey, it's okay. Go sit over there."Ayomide said pointing to a chair as I walked away from them but at the back of my mind, I knew he was going to pay the money and I wasn't happy about it.
After he got the form, we wrote our statement and when we were done we asked for direction to detective oloyede's office and we were directed.
"Good morning." he said as we walked in, busy arranging some files on his desk.
"Ooh Good morning." he said looking up at us before asking us to sit.
"Okay, what can I do for you?" he asked as Ayomide explained last night event to him.
"Ooh yes, I am in charge of your case. I hope you have written down your statement?" he asked
"Yes." We replied.
"Okay, don't worry. Investigations will begin this morning but for now, all we know is that there was a sign of struggle in the room so it is possible that it is murder. But it could also be suicide. Anything is possible. Also, for now, the body is in the mortuary and we will be doing some kind of autopsy to know some things. I hope you agree with that?" he asks while I nodded.
"Also, I was called yesterday and told that there was a bruise on her head which could also mean that she either fell down and hit her head on the floor or she was hit with something. But of course, all those are just assumptions the investigation is still ongoing." He said in a relaxed state and I wondered if I had judged him wrongly the day before and he was a competent police officer.
"Thank you so much. Don't hesitate to call us when there is anything you need."Ayomide said satisfied with what he has said.
"No problem, I am so sorry about the loss of your mother but I promise that I will find out the culprit behind it." He said as we stood up to leave.
"Thank you, sir."We said as we stood up and left.
When I got to the car, I was feeling a little better and I actually had a hope that even though my mother was gone forever, I could bring the culprit to justice and I promise myself to make sure that happens even if it was the last thing I do.
"Enitan, I forgot to tell you but my younger brother is arriving from the states today so I have to go and pick him up. Will you go with me?" he asks as we slid into the car.
"No, I will go home instead. I feel a bit better so I can make lunch for us all." I said looking at my wristwatch which state 12.15pm as my ringing tone cut through our conversation.
I picked up my phone which was my aunt and uncle who told me they were almost at the address I gave them. So I asked Ayomide to take me home before he went to pick up his brother. I got home just as I saw my Aunt and uncle pulling into the compound, I rushed to them as I said goodbye to Ayomide who promised to be back soon.
"Good Afternoon ma." I knelt down to greet her as I reached them.
"My dear stand up, God won't let you suffer. You will become successful by God's grace." She said and I could tell she was thinking about my mom as tears fell from her eyes. Uncle Daniel consoled her as we walked inside.
When we got in, I offered her a seat and a drink which she gladly accepted.
"So... According to what you told me this morning, Have you gone to the police?" Uncle Daniel ask me and Aunt Rose looked at me curiously.
"Yes..." I said as I started explaining the things we had been told at the police station as they nodded attentively.
"Okay, don't hesitate to call us for anything." Uncle said with aunt still crying.
"Let me get you something to eat." I said my voice cracked.
"Okay, thanks dear." He replied but as I walked into the kitchen, I slid to the ground and started crying.
I was still crying when I heard an unfamiliar voice say
"I'm sure your mom won't want you crying." The person said as I looked up to see an unfamiliar person that looked very very familiar.
