Chapter one.
I continued to shake my head and it took me a good 10 minutes to gather myself before picking up myself and calling Ayomide.
He arrived soon and knelt down before me calming me down while I chocked back large sobs.
"Mama can't be dead."I said as he consoled and finally, a mortuary ambulance which he has thankfully called arrived just then and I cried as I watch mama being carried into the back of the vehicle.
I kept on crying wondering how someone whom I had seen just 8 hours earlier could be dead.
"Yewande, look at me. "Ayomide said as I looked up to him my eyes swelled up and my makeup smeared.
"it's okay, Everything is fine. I have already called the police, they are on their way." he said but I barely heard what he was saying.
"Mum is dead.."I kept hallucinating until he shook me hard.
"Listen to me!! Yes, she is dead but that isn't the end of the world." he said firmly.
"No!!!, she can't be dead."I screamed crying and soon the police officers arrived.
I say numbly devoid of emotions as the police officers went around the house after exchanging greetings with ayomide.
The police officer with a very big tummy who looked like their boss came around after a few minutes of going around.
"Hello, I am Detective Oloyede." he said looking bored with a toothpick in between his teeth and I was very sure I would have laughed at his introduction if not for my condition at the moment.
"I am barrister Ayomide. Nice to meet you.So..." he trailed off
"Okay... Yes." he said coughing inattention.
"According to what I and my boys have gathered, this is a crime scene because the whole area was scattered and it looks like A murder scene and also we have checked the body and we are going to do an autopsy." he said but I had stopped listening since he called mama a body.
"Mama was dead, she was now a body."I said as I burst into another round of tears and ayomide silently pacified me still listening to the police officer who didn't seem to care that I was crying.
I was irritated with the man as he continued to talk and talk, using his toothpick to remove invisible meat remains from his teeth and using his hands to rub his pot belly.
"You would have to come to our office to write a statement." he said rounding up his statement.
"No problem, we will come for that tomorrow."Ayomide replied on our behalf.
"No problem but for now, this house will be locked down because it is a crime scene and it can't be tampered with and the body will be carried to the mortuary for now." he concluded as he turned away to tell his other young police officers to round up.
By the time the police van and the ambulance pulled out of our compound. A lot of my neighbors were already outside their house and wondering why there was a yellow tape in front of our house.
"You would have to sleep over at my place tonight," Ayomide said leading me to his car with my bag on his hand.
"But why?"I ask all of a sudden.
"It's her time, but I promise you that if this is truly murder. We would get to the end of this, we will find the murderer." he said.
"But that doesn't still change the fact that she is gone forever."I said choking on a dry sob.
"It's ok dear. It will be fine, I am here for you always." he said also driving out of our compound and silent tears left my eyes as I looked through the window and thought about my mother.
I thought about my sweet mother, I thought about how she was always smiling at my Dad. How sad she was after dad died before she gathered herself back for me. I remembered how she always kissed me on top of my head every morning and how she never failed to pray for me every morning and I remembered her smile earlier that morning as a fat tear left my eyes.
I walked like a zombie to Ayomide's house from the garage, I didn't even admire the exterior like I always did anytime I came over.
"Yewande, Stand up and get some rest. I will lead you to your room." he said taking my hand and leading me up the stairs.
"Thank you."I muttered silently as he got up to leave and he looked at me silently as if trying to convey some sort of message with his eyes.
"You don't have to thank me Yewande, Mrs Esther was very nice and she is like a mother to me just like your father is a brother to me so I will do whatever to do to help because you are like my younger sister."he said as he pulled me in for a hug and comforted me and when he finally left, I collapsed on the bed.
I tried to cry but my eyes were exhausted and it seems I exhausted all the tears in my eyes and before I knew it, I was asleep still in my work clothes with teary and makeup smeared face
