Chapter 15 - home
At the Cappellitti's house, just outside of Shark River, New Jersey - about an hour after chapter 14, still 2010
Jonah and Chris finally arrive at the Cappellitti's house just after dark. As they exit the Hummer and walk up the sidewalk to the house, they're met by Chris's parents. Neither one is smiling as they greet Chris who gives her dad a long hug and kiss on the cheek before moving on to her mom. Jonah can tell that Bill is angry and agitated by the way he shifts his weight from leg to leg. Ginny is smiling as she and her daughter break their embrace, but her face turns dark as she steps forward to confront Jonah. Jonah steps close to the pair and begins to apologize, "Bill, Ginny, I..." Ginny doesn't wait for him to finish, she reaches back and slaps him full across the face.
"How dare you take our daughter without our permission! How dare you!!" she bellows.
Jonah simply stares at her and is quiet for a bit. He looks in the open front door and down the hallway and when he's sure he doesn't see Chris, he points his finger at Ginny and begins, "How dare you... how dare you lie."
"W-what do you mean, I haven't...," Ginny begins.
Jonah interrupts her, "You lied to your family. You lied to your daughter. You've lied to everyone!"
Bill steps forward and starts to put his hand on Jonah's shoulder, "Now, hang on, Jo..."
But Jonah ignores him. "...you and Malachi set up everything, didn't you? There was no sick woman with a newborn, was there? There was no kindly old doctor. There wasn't even an adoption agency."
Bill takes his hand off of Jonah and looks to Ginny, "Ginny, what's he talking about?"
"Bill, what did she tell you?" asks Jonah, looking to Bill Cappellitti.
"W-well, Ginny handled everything. I-I went to the lawyer's office with her to sign the final papers," Bill stammers.
"And the lawyer that represented the birth mom - five foot ten, hundred and fifty, mid-thirties, round wire-rims?" Jonah asks.
"Yea, how did you...?" Bill's voice trails off.
"...because that was Malachi! He was behind it all. And Lily... the birth mom, confirmed it," Jonah tells him.
"B-but...why?" Bill asks, shocked.
"Because someone wanted Chris in your family... in this town...," Jonah tells them.
"But who?" Bill asks.
"I don't know. But I'm going to find out," Jonah says as he stares in Ginny.
"I-I didn't mean for all this to happen. He came to me. He said he had a beautiful baby girl for us. He said.....," Ginny explains to her husband.
Jonah turns and walks toward his vehicle. He's heard enough. Neither of them is paying attention to him, and Chris probably heard most of the conversation, so there will be more questions from her at some point.
As he pulls out of their development and heads toward the interstate, he has many of the same questions in his own mind. "Who was behind the whole plan and why did they want both girls here in Shark River? How did they get Malachi to do their work? And how exactly am I involved in all this?" he thinks as he drives into the night.
Song by Mister Mister "Kyrie" plays:
Kýrie, eléison
Kýrie, eléison
The wind blows hard against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road
My heart is old, it holds my memories
My body burns a gem-like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light
When I was young, I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be
Kýrie, eléison; Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison; Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison ; Where I'm going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison; On a highway in the light
About five minutes after Jonah's hummer leaves the development and is out of sight, a vehicle further up the street from the Cappellitti's house starts its engine and very slowly rolls down the street. It comes to a stop in from of their house. It's a brand-new, light gray Cadillac limousine. The owner and his chauffeur are both wearing finely tailored clothes. The chauffeur is wearing a navy-blue, pin-stripe suit, a bright blue dress shirt, a navy-blue New York Yankees tie, and a navy-blue New York Yankees baseball hat. He speaks with a heavy New Jersey accent when he says, "So, boss, dis is what you wan'ed to happen?" The owner in a back seat was watching the entire confrontation between the Cappellitti's and Jonah through a pair of binoculars with his windows down. He puts his window back up and packs the binoculars back into their leather case before answering. He has a slight, yet distinct British accent and he says every word with precision, "Exactly, Antonio. This is exactly how I envisioned tonight happening. The Fortress, Cappellitti, Remington, and Ford families have been thrust into the same cauldron of simmering emotions. The lie has been found out, the birth mother found, and the great Jonah Fortress doesn't know he has been played like a fine Stradivarius."
"So, where to now, boss"? inquires the chauffeur.
"Home, Antonio. I have a very special bottle of brandy waiting for me. A brandy reserved only for special occasions like tonight," he says with great satisfaction.
"Anything you say, Mr. Whitfield," Antonio answers as he flicks on the headlights and pulls out of the development and onto a highway that leads to New York City.
As he checks his iPhone for messages, Mr. Whitfield says half to himself and half to his chauffeur, "Soon enough we will begin 'Phase Four' of the plan."
The End
