Chapter 14 - Sharon Song

Back at St. Holly's Prep School, Shark River, New Jersey, about 4:00 PM that same day (after chapter 13, still 2010)

Jonah and Chris pull into the visitor's parking lot across from the school's main entrance. As they walk toward the main doors they're met by Chris's best friend, Sharon Song.

"Aiiiii!" they both squeal and hug each other.

"Welcome back!" They both yell.

"Missed you!" They say in unison.

Chris begins, "Oh Sharon, I have to introduce you..." Jonah extends his hand to her. "This is Jonah." Sharon recoils in horror, grabs Chris by the shoulders and whispers in her ear, "Jonah?? You mean the guy who took you?"

"No, no, you have it all wrong. Jonah's my friend and I went with him!" Chris explains.

"Well, tell that to your parents. They're telling everyone that he kidnapped you, and principal Packer called in the State Police and the FBI," Sharon exclaims.

Jonah says to Chris, "Why don't you go in and get your books and I'll go talk to the principal and see if I can get it straightened out."

Chris heads up the sidewalk to the school, but Jonah oddly finds that his feet aren't cooperating. He finds himself frozen to the same spot. Suddenly a black BMW coupe pulls into the lot and comes to a stop by the sidewalk where Sharon is standing. Time seems to slow down and Jonah stoops down, so that when Sharon opens the passenger door he gets a perfect look at the drivers face. The woman even looks briefly at Sharon as she sits in the seat, so he sees her entire face. She's an attractive Asian woman, probably Chinese, in her mid or late forties.

Jonah thinks to himself, "I've seen her before. But where?" He wonders as he heads for the principal's office. Fifteen minutes later, the two meet back at the Hummer. On the way back from the office, Jonah's computer-like mind goes through the list of all Asian people he's met on all of his missions, and then suddenly he remembers the beginning of this mission. "The other woman I was supposed to pick up at the airport was a Chinese woman named Yi Huang," he says to himself. "That's who was in the car!'" he exclaims as he slaps the side of the Hummer in frustration at himself.

"What's wrong?" calls Chris.

As he jumps in the vehicle, Jonah complains, "Two pieces of the puzzle just went past our noses and we didn't see them!" He starts the Hummer's engine, "Let me guess ---- Sharon's family has a restaurant here in town?"

"Yes, 'The Panda's Song', how did you...," Chris asks.

"The Panda's Song...?" Jonah exclaims. "...It all makes sense now!"

"What does?" Chris asks.

Jonah pushes a few buttons on the heads-up display and the Hummer squeals out of the school's roadway and into New Jersey rush-hour traffic. "You'll see in a minute," he says.

As their Hummer pulls into The Panda's Song parking lot, Jonah notices that the address is "77 South Main Street". Jonah and Chris get out and Jonah heads toward the rear entrance of the building.

Chris questions him pointing at the other end of the building, "But the front door is that way?"

"You can learn a lot about the owners of a restaurant by walking through their kitchen," he responds. When they reach the back door, Jonah notices the number "77" stenciled in black paint above the door. He says, half to Chris and half to himself, "Hmm, the number seventy-seven again. It reminds me of another verse in the book of Matthew – chapter seven, verse seven."

But before he can say it Chris chimes in, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and ye will find..."

Jonah slightly interrupts and finished the verse, "Knock and the door will be opened to you." He reaches up with his fist and pounds on the metal security door – Boom, boom, boom - the door echoes with the sound as he hits it. An older, slight Chinese man wearing an apron; a white, paper chefs' hat and carrying a meat cleaver, opens the door.

"有什么需要帮忙的吗?" ["May I help you?"] the man asks in Chinese.

Much to Chris's surprise, Jonah answers him in Chinese, "我想谈谈你的老板,宋毅" ["I would like to speak to your boss, Mrs. Song."]

The chef bows slightly and responds, "请跟我走。" ["Follow me, please."]

Jonah and Chris follow him though the kitchen. Jonah looks around as they walk. When they reach the double-doors that separate the kitchen from the dining room, the chef motions them to go through. Jonah and Chris enter the dining room and there, sitting alone with her back to the two walls at the nearest corner table, is the same Chinese woman that picked up Sharon Song in the black BMW. As Jonah approaches her, he asks, "Yi?" The woman jerks her head up to look at him and replies, "Yes?"

"Yi? Yi Huang?" Jonah asks.

"Yes, that is my maiden name - my Chinese name. Who are...," she begins to question.

Jonah sits down with her. "I'm Jonah Fortress, and I work for Black Knight Oil & Gas. Sixteen years ago I was suppose to pick up you and another woman..."

"It was my mother!" interjects Chris.

"Chris!?" questions Yi. "But your mom is...?"

"No, my mother, my birthmother is... Lily Ford," Chris corrects her.

"Oh my God, I haven't heard that name in fifteen years...," confesses Yi.

Sharon walks toward the table in her waitress outfit saying, "Mom!? Chris? Mr. Fortress? What are you doing here?" She looks at her mom, "Do you know this man?"

"Yes, I suppose, in a way, I do. When I arrived from China at the Los Angeles airport this man...," she gestures at Jonah, "...was going to arrest me and take me to an island where I'd be held for the rest of my life."

"Mom, what did you do??" exclaims a shocked Sharon.

"Yes, what did my mom do?" adds Chris, "She wouldn't tell me and neither would Jonah or that other man."

"Your mom..,." Says Yi, hesitating.

"Please tell me!" implores Chris.

"She killed my father! She killed him in cold blood. She poisoned him," blurts out Yi.

Chris and Sharon gasp in unison exclaiming, "Oh my God!"

Sharon starts, "Mom...! That's ter..."

Yi interrupts with more shocking news, "But I told her to!!"

"What? You what...??" Sharon asks incredulously.

"That's why they wanted me - because I planned the whole thing," Yi explains.

Sharon, in shock, is weeping openly, so Chris gets up from the booth to hug and try to console her. In shock from the news herself, she asks, "So what am I to think about my birth mother - that's she's a murderer ---a monster?"

Yi says, "Your mother is neither. When she realized that the Chinese government would stop at nothing to find us and take us back to prison or even to assassinate us, she decided that the only way to protect you was to turn herself in and put you up for adoption."

"But what did...," starts Chris.

Knowing what Chris's question is going to be, she replies, "If she didn't, then the state would've taken over and you would've ended up in foster care or a 'foster to adopt program'."

"But...," she begins again.

Yi explains, "She also protected me. When she got back to China she told the government that she masterminded the whole plan for my father's money and then killed me after we got to New Jersey. The government was satisfied and when I changed my name to Song, it left them and you...," she gestures at Jonah, "...without a trail to follow."

"Ohh...," sighs Chris.

"So, to me, your mother is the most courageous woman I know. She sacrificed her freedom for yours and mine," says Yi.

Now it's Sharon's turn to question her mother. She demands, "Mom! You were my spiritual mentor and led me to God. How could you do such a thing and still be a Christian!? How could you kill my grandpa?"

Yi sighs and her eyes fill with tears, and she begins her story slowly, "When we left China, Lily said that I would have a new life here in America. But the first few months I felt terrible. I was filled with tremendous guilt and pain because of what I had done. Lily's leaving to go back to China and turn herself in only made it worse. Then two women from the local Asian church came to visit me at my apartment. They told me that because of what Jesus had done on the cross – God would forgive me for whatever I had done no matter how vile and disgusting. So, a few weeks later as I talked with these two dear sisters, I asked Jesus to come into my heart and life. Instantly, all my guilt, shame, and sin fell off of me as Jesus threw them into the 'sea of forgiveness'. At that point, I truly had a new life. I never looked back at my past because I knew the enemy would use it to try to destroy me. That's why I never told you... never could tell you what I did."

Sharon can barely look at her mom and nods in acknowledgement. She and Chris are trying to calm each other down and Sharon finally says to her, "Let's go back to the kitchen for a cup of ginger tea." leaving Jonah and Yi alone at the table.

Yi asks Jonah, "So, how did you find me anyhow?"

"That's an interesting story because I wasn't looking for you," begins Jonah.

"What...?" Yi asks.

Jonah chuckles, "The last couple weeks, the Spirit kept telling me, 'seek ye first, seek ye first' but I thought it was a 'thing' I was supposed to be seeking first, not a 'who'. When our journey first started I wasn't even looking for Lily Ford."

"So how did you find Chris?" Yi inquires.

Jonah chuckles again, "That's interesting too - she found me!"

"Oh my...!" Yi exclaims and the two laugh together.

"I must ask you though...," begins Jonah. "When Malachi approached you at the airport, what did he say?"

"He said, 'If you come with me now, I'll take you to a safe place when you can start your new life," explains Yi.

"And if you didn't?" inquires Jonah.

"He said, 'In one minute men will come up behind you to arrest you and lock you up," states Yi.

"I see," Jonah answers.

"The last time I saw Malachi, he told me, 'Jonah will find you one day - he always finds his person'", Yi says.

"I get that, but what I don't get is this: Why did he put you in the same city, the same town where he placed Lily's baby?" asks Jonah.

"I-I don't know. I didn't know until a few minutes ago that Chris and Lily were connected or related!" says Yi.

"I see, then I'll have to keep looking," Jonah says, determinedly.

Chris and Sharon come out of the kitchen, both still have red eyes from crying. Jonah stands up saying, "Well, Chris, we better leave. We still have the last leg of our journey to go." He shakes hands with Sharon and Yi. "It's so nice to finally meet both of you," he says and they bow to each other.

As Jonah and Chris exit the restaurant, they're surprised when Sharon suddenly runs up behind them and asks, "Mr. Fortress, Mr. Fortress, can I talk to you a second?"

"Sure," he says.

"I-I just don't know how I'm going to go forward in my faith - knowing now what my mom did," Sharon begins.

"Well...," Jonah starts, trying to choose his words carefully.

"I mean, how can I worship God knowing that my own mother, the woman who read the Bible to me each night, who told me about Jesus, had my grandfather killed," Sharon blurts out.

"How God sees us is based on what we've done - not by what others have done," Jonah explains.

"W-well I-I...," Sharon stammers around.

"Sharon, God is going to do great things through you, but, great things get the Enemies attention, so stay awake and be alert," Jonah says. He steps forward and putting his hand behind her head, he kisses her forehead saying, "Goodbye Sharon"

"Goodbye, Jonah," she replies. "I-I mean, Mr. Fortress." Jonah and Chris climb back into the Hummer and exit The Panda's Song's parking lot.

As they drive across town heading for the Cappelletti's house, Chris thinks to herself, "I can't wait to see mom and dad and finally be home. What a great adventure that was!"

Jonah, meanwhile, has his own thoughts, "Our final step of this journey. This may be the hardest part yet – facing Bill and Ginny."

A/NA co-worker of mine is from China and she provided the Chinese for Jonah's conversation with the chef, so it's legit!
