The Cave

The moment that would be ruined instantly.

"How many people can this place fit?" Tony's voice came as he entered the kitchen breaking the couple apart from their incredibly close contact to look at the person who had just interrupted whatever was going on.

"Well there's five rooms. I will not let any of you sleep on my mattress, so Annie's with me. Nat will be in her room so that leave's three rooms. You'll have to double up." Clint proposed and Annie had to hold in a laugh at the look that crossed Tony's face. As if he had never bunked with someone before. Most likely because he had not. Not for a long time anyways. And not a bunk with friends.

The group soon started to settle for the night, they had managed to get a takeaway to the place, even if it involved driving into the small town a few miles over to pick up said food. And the rooms had been sorted. Annie had let Steve sleep in her room. The sheets had been clean before they had left for the mission, considering Annie wasn't sure the last time she had actually slept in her own bed, and he was the least likely to go snooping through her drawers. She knew he would eventually snoop a little bit, she knew they all would, but she also knew the snooping would not include any of her more personal effects. Tony however, would go through and attempt to shame her on her underwear choices she knew that.

Tony had taken one of the two guest rooms, the one of which had never been slept in and the bed had never been made. Leaving Annie to attempt to find bedding for the man. Who was not impressed when he was made to sleep on the cheap cotton sheets that Annie had found at the back of the airing cupboard. Thor had disappeared but there was a room for him too to sleep in. As it would turn out with Annie and Clint sharing a room there would only be the need for one other set of people to double.

Bruce and Thor were probably the most awkward pair at present but there was nothing like bonding after being stuck together. Only that would not seem to happen as Annie was making the bed, because it seemed that nobody other than her was able to do it at that moment in time, someone else came into the room. The someone else was no-one other than Bruce himself, the person she was supposed to be making the room up for. At first she assumed that it was because he was coming to actually offer his help. Until he remained stood awkwardly at the door something nervous to his persona.

"Can I help you Bruce?" Annie questioned as she had finally had enough of the man stood there watching her. It must have been a couple minutes or so that he had been stood there doing nor saying anything. Just watching her make up the bed in the room.

"This room's supposed to be for me right?"

"You and Thor hope you don't mind sharing. Not sure if Thor is actually coming back tonight but still." Annie responded going through the clear plan they had laid out downstairs once again.

"Well... um... you see." Bruce bounced around what he was trying to say. And Annie sighed before stopping to turn around and face him. Wondering what it was that he was avoiding saying to her.

"Yes Bruce?"

"Nat's asked me to stay with her tonight. And after today I don't think she should be alone." Bruce bumbled out and Annie wanted to be angry at him. Angry at Natasha and just how obvious she was being, and what felt like the rubbing in on the fact that Natasha was seeing someone else despite being in a relationship already. But she couldn't. Unsure of whether this was because she was just tired of it all at this point, or whether she had just accepted things were over now, just unofficially. After all she knew she did not want the mind link to break between her or Natasha but when she had re-experienced the pain of her parents link breaking earlier in the day her mind had never thought what it would be like if it would happen to Natasha.

Something she had felt guilt for when she had been making the beds. That was until now, it was almost screaming to her that her brain had already determined the relationship that she had with Natasha was over. It had to have been for that kind of reaction to occur. And maybe that was why she didn't experience the jealousy she was expecting to feel at Bruce's words. She had not experienced anything along those lines she was just annoyed she was making a room up that was probably not going to be used at all. That was more of a strong feeling than the words of Bruce.

"Okay, thanks for letting me know." Annie then almost waved him off as she turned her attention back to finishing making the bed. Just incase Thor did randomly reappear during the night and needed somewhere to sleep. Bruce though, did not leave the room instantly like she had expected him to, he hung back almost as if he still had something to say to Annie.

"I'm sorry Annie." He spoke and though Annie did not know exactly what he was apologising for she had a strong idea.

"I'm not ready to forgive or forget the actions either of you performed. But I can understand why on your part. Natasha is an incredibly special person. It's easy to fall for her. I just wished if it was going to happen it would have happened sometime else. With someone else. Someone I didn't consider a close friend a teammate. Someone I trusted. I will tolerate you Bruce because we are on the same team but there is no friendship between us. You are a guest in my home for now but when this is over, everything is over." Annie tried to indicate that the conversation was over, that she did not want to converse with him on the matter any further but she assumed that her tone was not indicative enough.

"I didn't mean any of this."

"I really don't want to be having this conversation with you right now Bruce. Nor probably ever. Please just leave me to be. The more I keep seeing you and her about, the more I have to realise that the life I had built is never going to be the same. That the future I thought I was going to have is gone." Annie hoped at least this time that her message would go through without any further stopping signs. And it appeared it would considering Bruce, turned to leave the room. He paused once again before finally deciding against saying any more and meekly moving his way down the corridor and back in the direction he had come from. His meekness was the one thing Annie would never guess Natasha could have been attracted to, but perhaps that was what was different between the current relationship the woman was in and the new one she desired to start. After all neither Annie nor Clint could really be described as meek.

A few hours later would everyone retire to their rooms, Annie and Clint were the final pair to retire. Attempting to play the good host Annie did not want to rush anybody away and into their rooms but by the time they had finally gotten to bed she was exhausted. The day she had experienced had truly worn down all her reserves of energy and here she was battered and unsure if she would even be able to get out of bed the next morning. And as she laid in bed next to Clint she roamed her hand over the area of which he had been shot. It was even more clear to her just how close she had come time and time again to loosing him. And in that moment, as she could clearly feel the difference between his own skin and the synthetic skin created to patch the hole, Annie promised herself that she would never allow him to slip from her fingers not if she was in any means to stop it.

"She lied you know." Annie mused into the air.

"Who lied?" Clint fired back slightly confused where Annie was heading with her conversation.

"Dr. Cho. I can tell the difference."
