Message in a bottle

Annie had been trying to reach Natasha for nearly three hours by now. The constant use of the very little telepathic power she had control over, was tiring her out. But Annie wouldn't stop. Not until she at least knew the other woman was okay. There were limits when the mind link was formed that Annie had agreed to, she wouldn't probe into their location unless absolutely necessary. And though it hadn't reached that point, it was rapidly heading in that direction. And Annie hated breaking promises especially the ones she made with people she loved but she needed to know.

Why was she all of a sudden being frozen out?

Deciding that as the night drew on and yet nobody from the entire agency had reached out to her to inform her of what was going on, Annie had reached the end of her tether. The local office was only a fifteen minute drive from the apartment she called home. She would just drive there and demand answers. It wouldn't be hard. Annie was a level 6 clearance agent it should be more than enough to get answers. She wasn't sure there was much higher than she was, her partners had been the same clearance as her for as long as she knew them and therefore, she should be more than able to get what she needed to know.

Storming down to the parking lot below the apartment complex Annie still hadn't given up on trying to make mental contact with Natasha. But considering she was getting no response she decided to give up for now. Get to the office and then try again. There was a couple of options she could have taken that belonged to the residents of her apartment. The truck that was about 10 years old belonged to Clint, and he loved that more than anything else, there was a nifty little Mazda soft top convertible which was Natasha's. But the thing which caught her eye was the motorbike. Annie had always owned one since she was 16 and her father brought her the little 250cc bike.

But the one she was staring at wasn't her Suzuki she had recently brought. She didn't want to take the uber fast bike out. Her attention was drawn to the bike that had belonged to her father. Considering she had only picked up those keys she had always known this was the bike she would take that evening. Supposing that due to the lost contact between her and Clint, and knowing that the worst could have happened, perhaps taking her father's bike would bring the same comfort he could have brought. If only she could have called her parents for advice, they did always know much more about it than she did.

The healthy roar of the engine accompanied Annie on her fifteen minute drive as she weaved her way through the traffic and directly into the underground parking lot of the SHIELD office. She took a minute or two to properly put up the bike, because that was what it deserved. Before making her way through the door and up to the office scanning her staff ID on the way to gain access. When the door flashed with Agent Summers she took a moment to miss the fact that had she never come over to SHIELD she would have been referred to as her Mutant name all this time. But alas she would probably always been Agent Summers now.

The office was quiet, not that she expected it to be packed with agents at this time of night, but Annie saw exactly who she needed to talk to. The agent sat at the computer wasn't one she knew the name of but considering he was typing away on the computer quite quickly meant he probably at least had been there a while. Or long enough to be able to give her the answer of what is going on. Said agent had heard her approaching and as he looked up to see who it was coming in at this time of night, considering it was rapidly approaching 9pm much too late for a casual trip into the office, his face was a picture. It was obvious he recognised the woman who was approaching him.

"Agent Summers." He greeted rather formally, and Annie wished she would be able to remain that polite but she knew the longer the pair would talk the more frustrated she would feel.

"I would love to be able to call your name, but alas I do not know it." Annie started off polite knowing that this was her best chance to get the information she needed.

"It's okay ma'am, what can I do for you tonight?" He didn't bother to introduce himself by name so Annie gathered it wasn't important to him that she knew his name.

"I am wondering if you could give me some information on where a couple of agents are." Be polite, get answers was something that had been drilled into her since her time at the Xavier Institute.

"Of course ma'am, which ones?"

"Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff." Annie watched as he clicked a couple buttons on his computer. But the beeping sound was one Annie wasn't sure she liked.

"I'm sorry Agent Summers it would appear that in order to tell you that you need level 7 clearance."

"Level 7, since when has there been a level 7?" Annie couldn't believe her ears she didn't have clearance to know this information? That had never happened to her since she had joined the agency.

"I don't know ma'am but as your only level 6 I really can't tell you."

"Not even if I have reason to believe Agent Barton might be dead?" Annie was beginning to think she truly had been frozen out. Why else wouldn't they let her know. Sure it wasn't common practice to tell everyone where you were going. But the three had each other as their next of kin on the files and therefore, if they were to request a location it's normally permitted. That's what she had been told anyways.

"I'm sorry Agent Summers but I can't even see his current status without level 7 clearance." The man on the other side seemed to be getting more fearful the more he was speaking to Annie. She knew she scared many of the lower level agents but this was ridiculous.

"It's okay Agent" Annie leaned forwards to see the ID badge pinned to his suit jacket "Daniels. I supposed I can't get any answers here. Thanks for your help." Annie turned quickly to leave the building in order to try and get contact any other way.

Before Annie left, she noticed another empty computer just a few desks up. Yet her heart dropped that even when she was logged into the computer she couldn't get any information. She couldn't even unlock their agent file. Either of their agent files. And considering the three had been partners in the field for five years she was used to having this access. But she had nothing.

Annie couldn't stay in the building any more knowing that she was actively being frozen out. Therefore she went back to the parking lot underneath the building once more. She went to climb onto the motorbike before she thought to once more contact Natasha.

'Natasha this is really getting serious, please tell me what's going on."

Annie waited almost 15 minutes for a response but the familiar pattern of her not getting a response once again repeated. Therefore, Annie did it, she broke that promise because if she lost both of them and she did nothing to stop it she would never be okay again. She would rather break that promise than know she lost them and couldn't help it. Therefore, she went to that mind link between her and Natasha and went searching for the other woman's location. It wasn't hard to find the coordinates and they were very nicely also with an above sea level figure.

It would appear the missing red head was somewhere on a plane very high above the ocean. But that wouldn't stop Annie. She would get to Natasha and work out just why this was happening.
