Love is Only a Feeling
Annie wasn't sure she had ever felt so lost in what to do with herself. Dr. Cho had met the team the second the jet had landed, at the renamed Avengers Tower, taking Clint away to be operated on. Natasha had seemingly disappeared the second they landed, most likely following Bruce wherever the stupid man went.
She had since changed out of her tactical suit, replacing her visor with her normal signature red glasses. Only to notice that somehow the red quartz had started to develop a small crack in the bottom left corner of the left lens, something she would have to have probably remade. Annie had been banned from entering the room as Dr Cho worked, and she had been also told to go rest by Tony and not enter his lab.
Rather she decides if she cannot enter she would spend her time waiting outside until Dr Cho informed Annie she could enter. Which involved her attempting to drag a chair from the living space to the outside of Banner's lab. A task of which was more than enough to distract her mind which did not seem to slow down in its rapid thought pattern.
"What are you doing?" The voice of the woman she had been looking for broke Annie out of her concentrative attempt to move the chair.
"We're not allowed inside the lab whilst Dr. Cho works so I thought I would wait outside but there were no chairs." Annie spoke knowing that her logic was sound and there was no way Natasha could argue against it.
"Why do you want to wait so eagerly outside? He's safe in there with Dr Cho we just have to wait for her to come and find us to let us know he is okay." Natasha it would seem did not share the same logic as Annie.
"You don't want to be there as soon as she's done to check on Clint." Annie asked with a bewildered tone to her voice she could not understand why Natasha would not want to be there waiting.
"He's a big boy, he'll be fine." Natasha had another thought path and set of actions it would seem.
"He just got big time shot Natasha, giving him our support should be the smallest thing we can do." Annie felt as though she was having to explain the most basic of concepts. The three were in a relationship together the idea of supporting each other through things like this was just something they were supposed to do.
"You're over reacting Annie. He'll be fine."
"I know that but I also know that if it was the other way around he would be anxiously waiting outside either of our rooms for any news. It's only nice to give him the same response."
"Go ahead if you think it will mean so much. I'll be around later." Natasha's words were evidence that she was done with this conversation, but there was something burning on the tip of Annie's tongue that she could no longer hold back.
"Do you even care for either of us anymore Natasha?" Annie tried not to sound as heartbroken as she felt as she asked the question that had been burning on her mind for so long. Though she would not get a response to her question as the other woman walked off back in the direction she had come and back from answering the question that Annie knew would either break or make their relationship.
Watching Natasha walk away, with what felt like an indifference to who Annie was and what she was supposed to mean to the older woman was enough to cause a raging anger to fill the youngest Avenger. And before she was even aware that the pressure was present, Annie let out a stream of matter projection as an optic blast fired at the chair she had been attempting to move, slicing the piece of furniture in half. And as the crack on her left lens increased in size Annie let out a groan of frustration before heading off to walk around the building and calm herself down. She had no intent of seeing Clint out of his surgery in a mood that was anything but happy that he was okay, and she was more than aware if she didn't walk off this anger that she would not be in this situation.
However, her initial walk she had attempted to go on to ease her anger, would only seem to increase it further. For as she made her way down past the different rooms on the development floor, she would come across a sight that would continue to confirm her anger and increase it further. For sat in one of the vacant rooms in such a close proximity that Annie could not tell whether Natasha was sat on Bruce's lap was the reason that Annie knew, deep down, that Natasha wanted out. After over 5 years of being together Annie watched as her relationship crumbled and she was supposed to just watch it happen.
The two woman had more than just small personality differences between them it would appear. There was a difference in what the word loyalty meant to them. A difference in what the term 'relationship' meant and what hurt the most was a possibility that there was a difference in what love meant. She had been a fool. All this time Annie had believed that Natasha was just not ready to confess the love she felt for her partners, that the damage the red room had done to her left her unable to speak those words aloud. But it was very soon coming to light that perhaps that fear that Natasha just did not feel that way was more a reality than a self conscious fear.
Annie could no longer stand there and watch on as the two exchanged words too close to be 'just friends' as Natasha had said time and time again. Close friends who were working together to see if they could control Bruce's other side. It was all a lie. The Hulk was Bruce, he did not need controlling he was Bruce's mutation and therefore was just the man with less of a conscious control of his emotion. The pair had been off galivanting about, enjoying the time in the early stage of their relationship whilst Natasha's partners sat back at home waiting eagerly on her return to them.
"Natalia Alinova Romanova. Our boyfriend is only rooms away, undergoing surgery and you're here sat on some other man's lap playing hooky." Annie wasn't sure she had ever sounded so angry in her life. She wasn't sure she had ever felt this angry. She had been betrayed before, but never had it hurt so much.
"Annie." Natasha had the audacity to act ashamed of her actions.
"I loved you. I spent over 5 years of my life building one with you. And this is how you repay me. Messing about with someone I considered a good friend. Having the audacity to act ashamed, you feel no remorse for this, only saddened that you've been caught." Annie was furious to the point where she could feel that pressure amounting, but she did nothing to stop it or control it. In that moment she was willing to give up control, end her own heartbreak and suffering.
"Annie, please let me explain." Natasha had never sounded so weak before in front of Annie but she wouldn't allow the older woman to once again spin things to where she would ultimately come up on top.
"Why should I? What's stopping me throwing the pair of you out of the window. Hang on why don't I break your heart just like you've broken mine." Annie lined her sight up to Bruce, the man who sat there scratching his neck in an anxious habit. He wanted to make it so that he was as little in the fire of anger which had become Annie Summers. But he was not so fortunate.
"And for you Bruce Banner. I thought you were my friend. I thought you cared for me as I did you. But it would appear you have both been deceitful. My girlfriend really? There's a whole world of women out there but you went for one who was in a committed relationship. Did she tell you that our relationship had come to an end? No. Did she tell you that we had kicked her from the relationship? I doubt it. But you still decided to go after her. Just remember Bruce, once a cheat always a cheat." Annie wanted nothing more than to strike out at them both, cause them pain. But the pain she was under was too much and she knew that her mutations could be very dangerous. Similar ones had destroyed both of her parents.
"I wish you guys nothing but pain and unhappiness." Annie turned with the intent of going to see if Clint was okay. She needed him in that moment, she needed him more than she probably ever had.
She just hoped she hadn't lost him as well.
