Fire

Annie was gently lead through the Avengers tower, down the lift and into what she assumed to be one of the labs. Hands on her shoulder gently coaxed her down and into one of the chairs of which usually were left unused in the labs. At first she assumed she had been left somewhere safely so that Clint could slip off and get her the pair of tactical glasses so Annie could open her eyes. As it was surprisingly difficult to keep them closed. But before he could slip off the others in the room began to talk between themselves. And Annie knew she had to sit until they had finished the discussion before she could open her eyes again.

"All of our work is gone. Ultron cleared out, used the internet as an escape hatch." Bruce's voice was the first one that Annie truly tuned into. She was still very much annoyed with the man and knew that there was only really two people in the room who could create such a thing as Ultron and Tony could not have done it alone. Therefore, she used this time to envision the rather brutal ways of which she wanted to make Bruce pay for the betrayal he was currently committing. Both as a team mate and as a friend.

"Ultron." Captain America confirmed, rather stupidly but Annie would never say that to her, still, childhood hero.

"He's been in everything. Files, surveillance. He probably knows more about us than we know about each other." Natasha was the next to speak and Annie felt as though she probably looked a little comical as she tried to move her head in the direction of each of the people speaking.

"He's in your files. He's in the internet. What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?" James Rhodes was the next to interject and it was like there was a cold wash go over the whole group gathered they had all realised just what could potentially be the next step.

"Nuclear codes." Maria was the one to voice what most of them were thinking at this point.

"Nuclear codes. Look we need to make some calls, assuming we still can." James Rhodes was probably thinking the most out of all of them about the many innocent civilians and Annie wished she could at least give him a look of thanks.

"Nukes? He said he wanted us dead." Natasha commented, her words a little bit of an understatement.

"He said he wanted us extinct Nat. There's a small difference." Annie finally joined the conversation, giving the tiniest input possible .

"He also said he killed someone." Clint's voice came from behind Annie as he seemed to have moved from beside her to behind. His hands now coming to rub small patterns on Annie's shoulder more than aware that she was struggling with control, and not being able to see putting the team's safety before her own comfort.

"But there wasn't anyone else in the building." Maria sounded confused and Annie could also agree as to who else there was in the building.

"Yes there was." Tony's voice was the second to last thing Annie heard. This was followed by an overly familiar beep. The beeping sound her hearing aids made to alert her to the fact that her batteries were about to die and she needed to change them. But to add to her rather terrible luck in that moment in time she did not have any on her. A quick hand sift through the pockets of Clint's jacket showed he also did not have any on him. Not that she expected him to, considering Clint often relied on Annie brining some for the both of them whenever they went anywhere.

She let out a groan at her rather unfortunate situation. Now she could no longer hear anything the team were saying to one another, her hearing having completely been damaged from the accident where she first discovered her mutation. And without her eyesight to help her lip read, Annie was now sitting in the dark and silence, in a room full of people.

'Annie, Annie. Are you okay there?' Clint's voice came through the mind link it was obvious he was concerned about Annie, something she admired but was rather too annoyed at the world to overly focus on in that moment.

'I'm deaf and blind at the moment Clint I'm practically useless to the situation.' Annie's anger towards her situation was obvious.

'You are never useless, hearing aid batteries out of juice?' Clint was attempting to be nice despite Annie's hostile responses and it was something that ensured they worked so well together, especially in moments like this.

'No I've just turned them off for the sake of it.'

'I've got you Ann. Give me one minute okay.' The connection between the pair was cut off from Clint's end as Annie felt his hands come up to her hearing aids. He was gentle in the way he removed them. It was about two minutes later when she felt his hands slowly work them back into place turning the pair back on. And with that the voices came back.

'What did you do?' Annie had an idea but she was still a little confused as to why her hearing aids were working again.

'Swapped your batteries for mine. I can lip read for now. We'll sort the rest out when the idiots are done arguing.'

"Recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing three hundred feet below it. We're the avengers. We can bust arm dealers all the live long day, but that up there? That's... that's the endgame. How were you guys planning on beating that?" Tony's voice was the first one that Annie heard now her hearing aids were back functioning. And she was very much lost in the few minutes of conversation she had missed.

"Together."

"We'll lose."

"And we'll do that together too. Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's make it a little smaller." And with Captain America's words Annie assumed as the conversation was over and she could not tell what the rest of the group was doing that the decision was made. They were going to find Ultron and stop him before what ever plans he had could be acted upon. A great idea in theory a not so great one in practice. The avengers weren't known for being overly great time keepers.

Annie was rather left there in her seat feeling still rather useless as Clint seemed to disappear from her sides. It might have been about five or ten minutes later when he returned. Something was slipped onto her face, the familiar frame of her battle glasses and their weight making comfortable positions on her features. And this was when Annie felt as though she could open her eyes slowly the fear still of losing control if said glasses were not in the right position. Upon opening her eyes she was met with a crouched Clint who had a beaming smile on his face.

"I missed your pretty eyes." His voice greeted her and Annie let out a laugh at his words.

"You don't even know what colour my eyes are." Annie rebutted.

"They're green." And with a megawatt smile and happy of his own achievement Annie couldn't help but to smile back at Clint.

"I love you so much." Annie's voice held a bit of her own awe that she felt in that moment.

"I love you so much more."
