8 - A Weird Man

The next week seems to go by pretty quickly. Maybe it is because I am excited for my next doctor's appointment.

On Friday, somebody asks me a weird question while I am walking home from school.

"Do you remember?" a tall man with dark brown hair asks me on my way home from school.

"Remember what?" I ask.

"Nothing. It seems you don't remember," he says.

He disappears before I can say anything else.

"Who was that man?" I say to myself.

That man sure was weird. It seems like he had a glitch in his holo-watch. I should report it.

I take my phone out to report what I saw. I call the number for reporting.

"Hello?" says the female on the other side.

"Hello. I would like to report a man," I say.

"Alright. Let me set up the connection," the female replies.

When you report someone, you see a holo-gram of the person you are talking to. Also you can do things such as create what you are reporting. No one else can hear what you are talking about or see what you are doing. All they see is you looking at something on your phone.

"What are you reporting?" asks the female.

"A man," I say.

"What did he say?" the female on the other side asks me.

I type in the exact words he said.

"What did he look like?" she asks me.

I use the holo-gram of a person to show what he looked like.

"He looked like this. He had dark brown hair, fair skin, and wasn't wearing his uniform, as you can see. He was wearing glasses so I don't know what his eyes looked like," I say.

"I will investigate this. You don't need to worry. I have all the information I need," she says.

"Okay," I say ending the call.

I wonder who that man was.

I continue to head home as normal. I know that I shouldn't worry about it.

I walk into the house with Lucas. I somehow made the bus even with that weird man who talked to me and how I had to report.

I go upstairs to start my homework. I find that I cannot concentrate.

Maybe I should talk to Dr. Jensen about this. She could help me no longer be worried. Good thing my doctor's appointment is two days away.

I force myself to work on my homework even though my mind is thinking about that weird man. Somehow, I finish it within the hour.

"Finally done!" I say to myself.

I check my holo-watch. 17:56.

I should go down for dinner. It's in 4 minutes.

I walk down stairs and I sit on the couch to wait for dinner.

After a few minutes pass, I go over to the kitchen and get my dinner. After that I sit down at the table and wait for everyone else to sit down so I can start eating.

"How was your day?" asks my dad to me.

"It was good," I say.

"Anything interesting happen today?" my dad asks me.

"Not during school, no," I say, telling the truth as that incident happened after school.

"So nothing interesting happened during school? Were any of your classes interesting?" asks my dad.

"My classes were the same as usual," I say.

"That's good. Your classes are the same as usual, does that mean that you enjoy them or what?" asks my dad.

"Well yes, I do enjoy them, sometimes," I say.

"That's good then," says Dad.

"Lucas, was school good for you?" asks my mom.

"Same as usual. It was fine," says Lucas.

"Good. I'm glad school was fine," says Mom.

"Vacation is coming up soon, isn't it?" says Dad.

"Yeah it is," I say.

"This will be your last year spending vacation with your family, regardless of whether or not we do anything. Once you are an adult, you get less of a vacation. It's so during your vacation you can still go out and buy things. The community also needs people working for some of the necessary jobs," says my mom.

"School ends soon after my vacation. I think we take a final test after vacation," I say.

"It's weird why you end school soon after vacation. Why not end it at the normal time?" asks Lucas.

"I guess it's because there's still a little bit left to teach or something like that, I don't know," I say.

I continue to eat my dinner.

"I'm all done," I say after I have finished.

I put my utensils and all in the proper places.

I sit on the couch and wait for the rest of my family as I have family time after dinner.

The next day, I get ready for school and I find that I almost leave for the bus stop too late. I am reminded by Lucas.

"Rin, don't you have to go to the bus stop?" he asks me.

"Oh right, I do," I say.

I leave with Lucas to the bus stop.

"Hi Rin, how are you doing?" says Lily when I arrive at the bus stop.

"I am doing well," I say.

"That's good," says Lily.

"Lily, we have tests after our break, right?" I ask.

"Yeah, we do," says Lily.

"Then after that schooling is over... We live by ourselves. I will miss being neighbors to you, Lily," I say.

"We can still keep in touch. Who knows, maybe we will be neighbors again?" asks Lily.

"That's true," I say.

"Anyway, let's save the goodbyes for when that time comes," says Lily.

"I guess you're right. Anyway, there's the bus!" I say.

The bus slows down and comes to a stop. We all get on the bus and take a seat.

"What are you doing for vacation?" I ask.

"I don't know yet. What about you?" Lily asks me.

"I don't know yet either," I say.

"You have to do something exciting! It is our last vacation before we become adults," says Lily.

"Yeah, you're right," I say.

' "You should make sure your parents have something planned!" exclaims Lily.

"I guess so. Do you think your parents will plan something?" I ask.

"Probably," says Lily.

"I hope I have some time to just be lazy for part of vacation," I say.

"Why?" asks Lily.

"So I can enjoy being lazy before the tests," I say.

"That makes sense," says Lily.

We continue to talk on the bus.

When we reach school, I almost don't notice we are there.

"Oh, we are at school," I say.

"Yeah. Let's go, Rin," says Lily.

"Ok," I say following Lily off the bus.

"Alexandra!" I say noticing Alexandra.

"Hi!" says Alexandra.

"What are you doing for vacation?" I ask Alexandra.

"My family is going to be visiting friends," says Alexandra.

"Lucky!" I say.

"Have fun seeing what that community looks like," says Lily.

"You will have to tell me all about what it looks like," I say.

"I will," says Alexandra.

"It's amazing, isn't it? We are in our last year of schooling. Then we are living on our own," I say.

"Yeah, it is. I'm scared, aren't you?" asks Alexandra.

"Somewhat," I say.

"What happens to your family?" asks Alexandra.

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"There will be an empty room in their house," she says.

"Don't they move to a smaller house?" I ask.

"Oh right. They move to a house for two adults and one child," says Alexandra.

"I've heard the neighborhood for two adults and one child is pretty small," I say.

"I would assume so," says Alexandra.

"I think it would be weird being a younger sibling," I say.

"Yeah, I guess so," says Alexandra.

"I wonder how it is like in the community you are visiting. Do you think people have to move to a new house when one of their children grows up?" I ask.

"Probably," says Alexandra.

"Anyway, what community are you going to?" I ask.

"One of the communities near the big one... I don't remember which," she replies.

"Oh," I say.

"That's the bell," says Alexandra.

"Right. Have fun on vacation," I say going to my first class.

Today I have math class first.

Class starts a few minutes after I arrive at math class.

"Alright class, today we will be learning about..." the teacher says what we will be learning about and starts the lesson.

After math class I have history technology.

"Today we will be learning about virtual realities," says Mr. Rhoads.

The unit and lesson comes up on my class tablet.

"Virtual realties have been around for many years and have advanced throughout the years. When virtual realities first came out, the graphics were horrible. At the time you could only play games that didn't require you to move. You would see the game in front of you. If you wanted to place a card down, you would have to speak that you want to place that card. You wouldn't be playing against an actual player. The next advancement in virtual realities was playing against actual people. You could not hear what the other person said. After that, you could talk to other people. Both of you were 2d and not 3d. Neither of you could move. In the previous versions you would have to say "Leave" to exit game. In this version you would have to say leave 3 times in a row. The next version you could move around, and this was a big advancement in virtual realities. Everything was still 2d. For whatever reason, people did not know how to make things 3d in virtual realities yet. A few video games were created but they were not popular. The next advancement was having things be 3d. This was also a big advancement. After that there was the most recent big advancement, having a menu where you could change games," says Mr. Rhoads.

Mr. Rhoads continues to talk about virtual realities.

The day keeps on dragging on and on and I am happy when school is finally over.

"Alexandra, Lily. Do you want to go hang out today?" I ask.

"Sure," says Alexandra.

"Sure," says Lily.

"How about we go to a café?" I suggest.

"Sure," says Alexandra.

"I would love to," says Lily.

A café is a place to meet other people and meet with friends.

We arrive at a nearby café, a café which I happen to like.

"Hello," says a worker of the café as we are walking in.

We take an empty table for 4 people in the café.

"How about we all order something to drink?" I suggest.

"Sure," Alexandra and Lily both say.

We all look at our menus and order our drinks.

"What should we talk about?" I ask.

"I don't know. Should we pick a random topic?" asks Lily.

"Sure," answers Alexandra.

We pick a random topic to talk about.

"We will talk about school," I say.

"What was your first class?" asks Lily.

"I had math first," I say.

"I had homeroom first," answers Alexandra.

"I had history technology," says Lily.

"What did you do during your first break?" I ask.

"I talked with friends," says Alexandra.

"I used the bathroom," I say.

"Rin! We didn't need to know that," says Alexandra.

"I was saying what I did during my first break..." I say.

"I talked with friends," says Lily.

"What did you do at lunch?" asks Alexandra.

"I went to lunch and ate lunch," I say.

"I ate lunch and talked with friends," says Lily.

"I ate lunch," says Alexandra.

We continue to ask each other questions about school.

Eventually we all decide to leave and go home.

"We should go home now," I say.

"I agree," says Alexandra.

"That's a good idea," says Lily.

We all get on the bus together and the bus stops at the stop closest to Alexandra's house first.

"Bye Alexandra," I say.

"Bye Alexandra, see you," says Lily.

We sit in silence after Alexandra gets off the bus.

"Bye Lily," I say when we are getting off.

"Bye Rin. I'll see you on Day 1," says Lily.

"Yeah, I'll see you," I say.

I go inside my house to start my homework.

The next day goes by fast as well. Before I even realize it, I have to go to my doctor's appointment.

Today I arrive a little earlier than usual, so I end up waiting longer. I decide to read a magazine about today's technology.

"Miss Casara, Dr. Jensen is ready for you," says the android at the front desk.

I exit the room through the door next to the front desk and I follow an android to Dr. Jensen's room.

"Hello Rin. Please sit down," says Dr. Jensen.

I sit down in the chair across from Dr. Jensen.

"How have you been doing?" asks Dr. Jensen.

"I have been doing well. There is one thing that has been bothering me," I say.

"What is that?" asks Dr. Jensen.

"Well... I saw a weird man who said something weird to me. I reported it, but it's been bugging me ever since it happened," I say.

"Has anything else been bothering you? Did you tell anyone else about this?" asks Dr. Jensen.

"No and no," I say.

"I see. I would like you to follow me," says Dr. Jensen.

I nod and follow Dr. Jensen into an almost-empty room.

"Please lay down and drink this," says Dr. Jensen handing me a purple drink.

I drink the purple drink and let myself fall asleep.

I wake up to Dr. Jensen saying, "I'm all done with that, let's go back to my room."

"Alright," I say.

When we reach the room, we sit down in the same chairs as before.

"How has school been?" asks Dr. Jensen. This is a question I wasn't expecting at all.

"It's been the same," I say.

"Are you enjoying your new classes?" she asks me.

"Yes, I am," I say.

"That is good," she tells me.

"What about at home? Is everything going fine at home as well?" she asks.

"Yeah, I think so," I say.

"Are you excited or nervous about moving out of your house in a few months?" asks Dr. Jensen.

"I think I'm some of both. I'm somewhat excited because it will be something new, but I am nervous too. I am nervous about leaving my family," I say.

"That is normal. If you feel your nervousness is starting to become a problem, we can talk about it more another time," she says.

"Anyway, I would like you to take a test on the holo-top," she says.

She goes over to the holo-top to bring something up. Once she is done I sit in the chair at the desk.

I take the test with ease, as this test is questions about my current life style. It is a little hard, but most of it is easy. There are questions like, "What do you do during your free time?" or " How do you feel about your life style?" All easy questions.

Once I finish I say, "I'm finished with the test."

"Good, let's move on," Dr. Jensen replies.

We continue my doctor's appointment. It ends up being a little less exciting than I thought it would be.

"You may leave now," Dr. Jensen says at the end of the doctor's appointment.

Dr. Jensen told me that my doctor's appointments would be going back to normal soon. Soon I will be having doctor's appointments as often as all adults do. It seems Lily was right when she said my doctor's appointments would go back to normal. I wonder if it will really be every 6 months or more frequent. I don't know how often adults have doctor's appointments.

AN: Just you wait... JUST YOU WAIT! The next chapter is going to get interesting, I swear (or maybe you will not find it interesting, but I will). I've actually already started the next chapter.

Also, what are your theories for what will happen later in the story?
