6 - School
Today is Monday, so I have school. I was thinking about telling Mom about how much fun I had with my friends at the clothes store, but only Lucas and I are eating breakfast at the same time today. Lucas doesn't care about girl fashions at all. He cares about boys fashions. He doesn't like hearing anyone talk about fashion, unless it is a friend of his. That's at least how it seems.
After I eat and am ready to go to school, I take the bus as I almost always do. I don't like riding my bike that much. Besides, we are not required to ride it. There are certain times in the year when we do have to ride it, but that isn't to school or work and it isn't that time of year.
When I get to the bus stop, I see Lily is there as well.
"Hi Lily," I say.
"Hi Rin. Did you have fun clothes shopping yesterday?" she asks me.
"Yeah. I had tons of fun!" I say.
"That's great. I had fun too," says Lily.
"We should all hangout again sometime," I say seeing the bus not that far away.
The bus gets closer and eventually stops at the bus stop.
"I agree," says Lily, getting on the bus as the bus has stopped and the doors have opened.
The school Lily, Alexandra and I go to is the main school for higher education in this community. I don't know how many students it has, but I know it has more than the other school for higher education in the community.
In the society school is broken into lower and higher education. Lower education starts earlier than higher education and you learn easier things in it. Once you start school as a 7 year old—or are entering 5th grade—you start higher education. Higher education is when you are learning hard things. Not only that but you are learning things that you will need to know when you are an adult.
"What is your first period today?" I ask Lily.
"I have," says Lily, looking at her holo-watch, "Homeroom first."
"I have homeroom first today as well. I don't really understand the point of having homeroom," I say.
"I think we have it because of the teachers," says Lily.
"Oh yeah. Don't we have it because the teachers need to make sure everything is going well? They ask us if we are struggling in any subject and we can ask questions about our schedules and all," I say.
"Oh. That's right. It's so the teachers know that there isn't anything they are doing wrong and so they know we are getting the material. I think they also use the time to see what jobs we fit into," says Lily.
"They use that time to find jobs for us? Now that I think about it, I do remember the teachers asking job-related questions..." I say.
At the next bus stop, I see a friend of my brother's get on. I don't even know if my brother is on the bus. When I see him sit in a seat with only one person sitting in it, I realize he is.
"I wonder what job I will get," I say.
"I have been wondering as well. I'm sure we will both get jobs that are best for us," says Lily.
"For you it's obvious," I say, "You're so into fashion, I'm sure that will be your job."
"I guess so," says Lily.
We both stay silent for a while.
"There's the school," I say.
"I wonder what the other schools in this community are like," I say.
"They are probably a lot smaller," Lily replies.
"Yeah. I wonder if it's easier in the smaller schools," I say.
"Of course not. They learn the same things as us at the other school for higher education in this community," says Lily.
"I mean I wonder if it is easier having less people in the school," I say.
"Maybe," says Lily.
After the bus comes to a stop and we get off I say, "Do you have homeroom in the same room as me today?"
"Let's compare," says Lily.
We both look at our schedules and find out that we do have homeroom at the same place.
"There is still awhile until school starts. I think I might talk to some other friends or something like that. What are you going to do?" I ask.
"I think I'll do the same," says Lily.
We both go off in our own directions to do other things while we wait for school to start. I decide to talk to a friend of mine from class. She is smart and interested in science. She has brown hair and blue eyes like me, but her hair color is darker than mine. My hair color is light brown while she has medium natural brown hair.
We talk for a while. She says that her doctor told her she fit into science. I don't talk with this friend much as I am not interested in science. We end up talking about other things, such as school. She isn't the same as I remember when I last talked to her. It may just be my imagination, as I haven't talked to her in months.
Before I realize it, my holo-watch starts going off and it is the first bell.
"That's the first bell," I say.
At school, our holo-watches go off 5 minutes before class. This is called the first bell. When class starts, our holo-watches go off again and this is the second bell. No one gets annoyed by other people's holo-watches because only the owner of the holo-watch can hear all the noises it makes. I can't hear my friend's first bell on her holo-watch while she can't hear mine.
In first period, we are asked about what we want to be and that sort of thing. We all get a paper we have to fill out.
The first question says, "What jobs do you want to have? Pick your top 3"
I put down expressive arts, also known as writing, first. Then I add drawing and creating virtual realities.
The second question asks, "Which of these do you think you are best at?" and I write down my answer. It takes me a minute to write it down. This question really is hard, as I don't know
Then the third question says, "What job do you think you will get?"
I continue to fill out the questions until I finish. Soon after I am done the bell rings and class is over.
I go to my next class, history technology. It is where we learn about today's technology and technology in the past.
I sit down in my seat while others are doing the same. I get ready for history technology and when I am finished the bell rings.
"Everyone, class is starting," says the teacher, Mr. Rhoads.
"Take out your class tablets and make sure you are connected," he says.
We all check and we all are connected.
"Today we will be continuing our unit on Virtual Technologies. Today we will be learning about virtual realities," he says.
"Unit – Virtual Technologies" up on my class tablet. After that "Virtual Realities" comes up.
"A virtual reality is a virtual world where you use your brain to connect. The difference from the real world is that when people connect they can do all sorts of things, such as play game and meet other people. In this community, 85% of adults use an adult virtual reality machine weekly. Of that 75%, 10% say they use it to meet other people, 15% say they use it to play games, 20% say they use it for work, 10% use it for an escape, 10% use it to learn new information, and 35% use it for multiple reasons. Of the remaining 15% of adults who do not use a virtual reality machine weekly, all of them have used a virtual reality machine, but not all of them have used an adult virtual reality machine. Some reasons for not using a virtual reality machine weekly is they were never that interested in virtual reality machines, they have been busy doing other things, or never got an adult virtual reality machine after they started living alone. So, all adults have used a virtual reality machine but not all have one," he says stopping for a moment.
Once the lesson has started, whenever the teacher says something, it goes to our class tablets.
Our class tablets are small, but we can bring a hologram up that is much bigger than the class tablet. Our class tablets can do more than they seem. First of all you can view what the teacher said. You can also view useful things the teacher said. You can view notes that you have taken yourself. Besides those features, there are a few other features such as sorting lessons by unit or date. If you have it by unit you can have it by date within each unit or you can have it alphabetically. If you sort it by date it will be harder to tell when a new unit starts.
"To enter a virtual reality, you have to connect to it by putting the machine on you. This machine goes on your head, with different models all looking different. The most recent model goes over your eyes and you wear them like googles except it is a machine. There are 4 lights on the most recent model. They are connection, online, sustainability, and on. When the connection light is lit up, you know that the person using the machine is connected. If the online light is on that means the person is online and playing on the machine. If you see the third light on it means that everything is working fine and that there isn't any problems. If the last light is on it means the machine is on. All of the lights need to be lit up for the device to be working. If the device malfunctions, the person will be automatically logged out," the teacher stops for a moment before speaking again.
The teacher continues to talk about virtual realities. I like this class because we learn about technology. I find technology very interesting and I always learn something about technology that I didn't know about before.
Once class ends, I check my schedule. I see that the next thing on my schedule is "expressive arts."
This must be what Dr. Jensen was talking about.
I go to the class called "expressive arts." While walking there, I wonder how many students will be in the class. I hope there are not many students in the class, but at the same time I hope there is about the same about of students as the other classes I have took. I might feel a little bit more relaxed with less students in the class but I might also feel better with there being a normal amount. It could make me realize that a lot of other people have the same interest as me.
Once I have made it to the class, I see that it has a normal amount of desks. It seems that the amount of people here is the same as my other classes.
After the second bell rings the teacher comes in and says, "Everyone sit down. Class is starting now. I will start by introducing myself. I am Ms. Page. Any questions?"
Somebody raises their hand. The person raising their hand is a boy named John. John was always somewhat of a trouble maker, so I assume his question will be ridiculous. His questions always have been. I could be wrong and he could have a normal question.
"Ms. Page... is your last name page because you teach writing?" he asks.
"Excuse me! You do not ask such questions! Not only that but in this class only call writing "Expressive Arts." It is called expressive arts for a reason. The reason is because when you write you are sometimes expressing your feelings. You sometimes even do so in fiction. I don't know if your question is serious or not about my last name, but I assume it wasn't. Only ask serious questions in this class. Any other questions?" Ms. Page says in an annoyed voice.
Somebody else raises their hand.
"Yes?" says Ms. Page.
"What if you write and you are not expressing your feelings? Is that still expressive arts?" a girl with a shy-sounding voice asks.
"Good question. It is still called expressive arts. I guess it's because you could somewhere in what you are writing. If you write a paper and you say having 2 children is the best that is expressing your feelings for having two children. If you write a fiction story about a girl in the community, you still could be expressing your feelings for the community. I am not taking any more questions now, we need to start the lesson," says the teacher.
The teacher then starts the lesson. It turns out to be not the most interesting class, but not the most boring class either. The teacher isn't the nicest, but I can deal with having her as a teacher.
Later in the day during a break I go to the school library to read.
The library in this school is a decent size. All around there are book previews. You click the picture that shows the cover and title. When you click it, the description is shown and a preview of the book. You can also look for the books on a reading tablet, but sometimes it is nice to just look around. There are reading tablets in here for people to use.
Once I have picked a book, I sit down at one of the tables.
"Hi Lily," I say noticing Lily.
"Hi Rin. Did you come in here to read?" she asks.
"Yeah I did. What book are you reading?" I ask.
"I'm reading a fashion magazine," replies Lily.
"Is there any new trends?" I ask.
"The next edition of a magazine Fashion Latest came out the other day. The trends are the same as last month's trends. Trends usually take a long time to change," she replies.
"Oh, I see," I say.
"We should do something this weekend. Are you free?" she asks me.
"I should be free after school on day 6, or Saturday. On day 7 I have a doctor's appointment," I say.
"Maybe we should talk during school on day 6 about going somewhere. We could both end up not being free," says Lily.
"Yeah, that's a good idea," I reply.
"What else should we talk about?" asks Lily.
"Hmm... I know! Have you noticed that people have been using day 1 through day 7 instead of the other way," I say.
"I've noticed that too. People used to say Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday much more than they do now," says Lily.
"It's kind of like the latest trends. My mom said that when she was a child-citizen they used day 1 through day 7. She said when she was around 10 to a few years after she became an adult-citizen they used Monday through Sunday," I say.
"Yeah, it is," says Lily.
I hear my holo-watch go off tell me that there is 5 minutes before my next class starts.
"My break is over now, I just heard the first bell," I say.
"Mine went off too. Bye Rin, see you soon," says Lily.
"Yeah, see you!" I say.
While walking to my next class, I think about the fact that I have a doctor's appointment this day 7 with my family. Why does my whole family have to come with me? Why are my doctor's appointments changing in length? Why am I having so many? Is this normal? Is there something wrong with me?
I try to think about other things so I will not be distracted in my next class, but it is hard.
AN: So that was chapter... um.. well... oh right! Chapter 6. I hoped you liked it :D
It's annual renafan101 needs to pick up the pace and write more. This has been a thing since the other day, when August started. And how many times has this happened? Well... ummm.... this is the first year it's happening! ...and there's no guarantee that it will happen again next year.
And I need to write more because school starts soon. (not only should I write more, but I need to do my summer homework). I'm thinking about maybe writing a page of this story, then a page of Test Subject #9536 (is that correct? let me check be right back) Yes it's correct and I just realized I accidentally put a 5 instead of a 6 in the title. So it was Test Subject #9535 instead of Test Subject #9536.
I'm really off topic. So what I'm going to do is write a page of this, then a page of Test Subject story, and then do a page of my summer math homework. It's a good way to get it done and all.
This is a really long author's note about random things.
Anyways, if you have any questions about the story please ask! In this chapter and the next few, I'm going to try to answer unanswered questions about the story. I'm not going to answer every single one, but most of them. Then the action will start! Yay! The story will get interesting!
If you liked the chapter, feel free to vote on it by clicking the vote button at the top right corner.
