21| Hide & Seek
I leaned against Amelia's car, my finger hovering over the call button on my phone. I knew I needed to call Logan—it was the smartest thing to do. I didn't know which apartment was Amelia's and I couldn't leave her out here in the car.
But I didn't know if I could handle hearing his voice right now. He probably wouldn't even answer after the last time. Christ. What was I going to do?
The screeching of car tires drew my attention. I looked up from my phone and saw a black car whip into a parking spot. This person was in a hurry. When the man got out of the car, I sighed with relief.
"Wyatt! Over here!"
Wyatt looked over at me and started walking in my direction. "Grant? Is that you?"
I shifted uncomfortably on my feet before offering him my hand. "Yeah. It's been awhile."
Wyatt shook my hand before glancing in the passenger window to see Amelia passed out. "What the hell—" He looked back at me with a frown. "What's going on?"
"I'll explain everything. But we should get her inside first. I got her this far but she passed out before I could get her apartment number."
Wyatt carefully scooped up Amelia in his arms. I grabbed her purse from the floorboard and followed Wyatt to the elevator. During the slow ride up to her floor, I thought about something the question Amelia had asked me at the bar.
"Are you guys going to try again?"
That question hit me hard. Logan and I never really tried—not really. Not in the way Amelia meant. I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be with him that way. A relationship. Boyfriends. God, that sounded weird. It didn't matter, though. I was pretty sure the bridge between us was burnt.
The elevator dinged and walked in silence down the long hallway until we got to her door.
"Her keys are in her bag," Wyatt said. "It's the square gold one."
"Got it."
I quickly unlocked the door and held it open for him. He maneuvered Amelia through the doorway and went straight towards her bedroom. Well, I assumed it was her bedroom.
"Help yourself to anything in the fridge," he called out. "I'll be out in a minute."
I sat her keys and purse on the counter before I walked into her kitchen. I didn't normally look into a stranger's fridge, but tonight I made an exception. I pulled the door open and smiled when I saw a twelve pack of Stella on the middle shelf.
"Girl's got taste."
I walked into her living room and took a seat on her couch. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and opened the gallery. I swiped to the left until I found the picture I was looking for. Logan had no idea that I even took this picture.
It was from a few years ago, after we had sex the first time. We were at a party and Logan wanted to smoke. We went outside on the balcony attached to the roof. Logan was wearing a jean jacket, leaning against the railing. We were joking about him not knowing how to blow O rings with the smoke. So he tried...and failed. Multiple times. I had no idea what possessed me to pull out my phone and small that picture; but I did.
The creaking of Amelia's bedroom door had me quickly sliding my phone back into my pocket. Wyatt went to the fridge and grabbed a beer for himself before joining me in the living room.
"It's been a long time." Wyatt sat on the couch across from me and stretched out his legs. "So, what happened tonight?"
I cleared my throat. I needed to proceed with caution here. "I was at Down the Rabbit Hole and Amelia was sitting next to me. I didn't see her at first. She recognized me and said hello."
"How did she recognize you? When did you two meet?"
The question made me uncomfortable, but it was valid. "I came by the lake house once when you guys were there. Logan had told me about her and she passed by us when we were talking."
"Okay, so tonight..."
I smiled and glanced to her closed bedroom door. "She's really something, Wyatt." I looked bat to him. "You have a really amazing girl."
"She's my brother's girl." He said the words quickly. Too quickly..
"I know she and Logan aren't getting married, Wyatt. She told me."
Now he was the one who hesitated. "What else did she tell you?"
I leaned back against the couch, stretching my arm across the top of it. "A lot, actually. I think she just needed someone to vent to. She told me about your guys' past and what happened at the lake house." My eyes bored into hers. "You really hurt her, Wyatt."
He cursed under his breath and ran a hand over his face. "I know. I was a fucking idiot. She wanted me to tell her I loved her, but I was terrified. I've seen what love can do to people." Heavy sigh. "I just can't lose her."
I felt for the guy, but he needed to realize the truth. "You did lose her, Wyatt. Are you going to try to get her back?"
He nodded. "I was on my way to her place already when she called me. I realized a little too late that I made the biggest mistake of my life. Well, maybe the 2nd biggest. I love her. More than anything. When she wakes up, I'm going to tell her."
"Good," I said. "That's good." I never said those words to Logan. I didn't even know if I did feel that for him. There were a few times I suspected he might say it to me. I usually distracted him to keep the situation light.
"So, she was trying to make me jealous, huh? The whole blonde guy thing?"
I laughed and took a drink of my beer. "Nah. She was just messing with you. I told her I would make sure she got home okay, that's all."
"I appreciate that, Grant. Really." Wyatt cocked his head to the side. "Have you talked to Logan lately?"
I glanced away nervously. "No, not since I came by the lake house. I actually tried to call him tonight since I didn't have you're number. Why? Haven't you?"
"Yeah," he replied. "I don't know. Something's up with him. I'm sure it's nothing."
That made me worry a little and only regret my last conversation with him more. I knew I probably hurt him, but I was intoxicated and, to be honest, feeling really shitty. But it was no excuse.
After a few minutes of silence, I got to my feet. "I should get going. It's been a long night."
Wyatt opened Amelia's door for me and held it open. "Thank you, Grant. For everything. I was fucking terrified something would happen to her."
"Anytime," I replied softly. "Take care of her, Wyatt. She's pretty incredible. She deserves a guy like you."
"Thanks."
Without looking back, I left Amelia's apartment and went back to my car. Luckily my hotel wasn't far from here. When I slid into the driver's seat, I pulled out my phone and tried to call Logan. I needed to apologize at least.
Great. Straight to voicemail.
"This is Logan. You know what to do."
"Hey, it's me." I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Look I'm sorry about what I said the other day. I was drunk and—yeah. Call me back, okay? I—I miss you."
I wrapped a towel around my waist and stepped out of the shower. Someone was knocking at my door and I didn't order room service. Who the hell was it? When I opened the door, my eyes widened when I saw Amelia. And Wyatt.
"Grant!"
"Amelia? Wyatt? What's going on?"
Amelia offered me a kind smile that had the opposite effect on me. It worried me. "Can we come in? It's important," she said quickly.
"Uh, sure." I held the door open for them. "Give me a second and I'll put on some clothes."
As I was getting changed in the bathroom, I could hear the two of them talking quietly.
"You sure this is a good idea?" Wyatt asked her.
"You got a better idea and I'm all ears."
Fuck. What the hell was going on? I came out of the bathroom and sat on the edge of the bed. "So, what brings you guys here?"
When Wyatt went to say something, Amelia held her hand up to silence him. I could tell by the way she looked at me that this was serious.
"We think Logan is—well, I don't know if 'missing' is the right term. He said he would be back in a week and it's been longer than that. Also, his phone is disconnected and his mom is worried."
I looked from Amelia to Wyatt, then back to Amelia. "I understand your concern, but I don't understand why you think I can help."
Actually, I do.
"He knows, Grant," she said softly.
Holy-mother-fucking-shit. What the fuck! "Knows what?"
"Everything," Wyatt answered and leaned forward. "I know Logan is gay and you two have some sort of history. Before you get mad at Lia, she only told me because we're worried about Logan. I love my brother no matter what and, if all he's doing is taking time to himself to sort shit out, then I'm all for it. But you know my mother, Grant. If she doesn't hear from him in twenty-four hours, she's going to send out a fucking search party."
I got up from the bed and started pacing back and forth in the room. I couldn't fucking believe this. Wyatt know. He knows. I ran my hands through my wet hair multiple times.
Amelia came over and stood in front of me. "I know this is a lot and we kind of ambushed you with it. But you know this side of Logan better than we do. Do you know where he could be?"
I studied her face. I wasn't mad at her. I may have only met her less than twenty-four hours ago, but I trusted her enough to know that she wouldn't have told Wyatt unless it was needed. When I finally answered her, my voice was a little shaky. "I think I know where he is. There's a place upstate. It's remote—which is probably why his phone isn't working."
Wyatt got to his feet and clapped his hands together. "Good. Let's go for a road trip."
"No," I said immediately. "It has to be just me."
Things would not go well if I showed up with Logan's brother. It would be really fucking bad.
"No fucking way," Wyatt shot back. "This is my brother. If something's wrong—"
"I'll call you immediately. I have a sat-phone that I take with me when I go up there. I'll pick it up on the way." I walked over to Wyatt. "Look, I know him. If you guys show up, he's going to freak. Let me go and I'll bring him back. I promise."
I could tell Wyatt wanted to argue. So did Amelia. Luckily, she walked over to him and took his hand in hers. "Listen to him, Wyatt. He's right."
"Fine. But when you find him—"
"I'll call you. I swear," I promised.
When Wyatt and Amelia started heading out of the room, I wanted to set something straight. "Amelia, wait."
"I'll meet you outside," she said to Wyatt. Once he left, she turned to face me. "Thank you for doing this."
"Of course." I met her stare. "I just wanted to tell you that I'm not mad that you told Wyatt. Considering what's going on, I get it."
Even if it made my skin crawl.
"Thanks," she said before she turned to leave. "Hey, Grant?"
"Yeah?"
"Logan's really lucky."
Once I was alone in the room, I tried to get ahold of myself. I took a few deep breaths and sat on the edge of my bed once again. I buried my face in my hands. Suddenly, I could hear Logan's voice in my head...
"You're pretty amazing. You know that right?"
I smiled and rolled my eyes playfully. "You know you say that every time we have sex?"
"It's true," he laughed. "Just take the compliment."
I shot to my feet and started packing up my shit. I did know where Logan was. There was only one place he would go in a situation like this. I grabbed my keys and did a quick sweep to make sure I didn't forget anything.
I went to the front counter, checked out, then got in my car. It's funny how this stuff worked out. I was missing him—now I'm going to find him.
