Chapter One

I watched as the empty old merry go round spun like a slowing top. The fall wind was blowing fiercely. The swings beside me creaked and swayed. Leaves blew all around. I smiled. A storm was about to hit my small town. I looked towards the grey sky. The clouds were rolling in fast. Lightening was bright in the distance. Thunder made my skin crawl. I stood from my swing, leaving it empty. The street was lonely today. The radio had warned us to stay inside our homes. They said that this storm may be one of the worst we've had this year. Dad was mad when I walked out of the house. He hates that I enjoy storms like these. He says that they are dangerous and I could get hurt. He doesn't want to lose me. He doesn't want me to just be gone one day, like mom. The lightening flashes and I see her face. I used to blame my sister but how could I? She was only a baby. She didn't kill my mother. It was just a freak accident, to die giving birth. Wasn't that supposed to be a happy time? A beautiful thing? The thunder roared in my chest. But that was 16 years ago and it's all a blur to me now. A rain drop lands on my pale hand and I look back to the sky as it darkens.

Sirens begin to blare in the distance. My skin starts to grow cold. I pull my light blue jacket around myself. The sirens have always worried me. I take off towards home. It'll take me almost twenty minutes to get there. My feet scuff the hard ground making the fallen leaves crumble. The rain begins to fall harder. It is warm compared to the wind. I leave the small wet drops run down my face. It soaks my hair. Then my shoulders. I start walking a little faster. I don't want to get too soaked and catch a cold. The rain falls harder the faster I walk. My clothes are getting heavy. I begin to run but the wind slows me. I feel like I'm barely moving at all. Lightening hits right in front of me. I jump and streak  causing some near by bird to take flight. My body shakes. I regathered my thoughts and begin walking again. Thunder sounds from all around me. The lightening seems to light up the whole world. Night to day. For seconds at a time. I just want to be home already. I blink the falling rain drops off my eye lashes. My body shivers. I wish the rain off of me.

And that's exactly what happens. My clothes suddenly dry. My hair stops dripping. The ground around my feet not even a tad bit wet. I blink and rub my eyes. My hands are now warm. Stepping forward I watch as the place where my foot had been becomes wet and the place where my foot had just landed becomes dry. I do this for awhile. Amazed that it is raining everywhere except for where I am. I shake my head. This has to be a dream. But it isn't. It happens this way the whole way home. Dry where I stand. Wet where I had stood.

When I arrive home I run through the door. Yes, through the door. I just thought to myself 'I don't have to open that door' and just like that I didn't have to. Dad smiles at me from his comfy green recliner. Did he not just see that? My sister looks up from her tablet, mouth hanging wide. She defiantly saw it. So I am not dreaming. I'm sure of it.

"How did you do that?" my sister asks me.

I shrug my dry shoulders. "I don't know Ana."

She looks to Dad who is still smiling at me. Then I remember it. I had wished he wouldn't be mad when I got home. He's not mad. She blinked at him a couple times before looking back at me.

"He was just mad like five minutes ago and now he isn't even yelling at you. What the heck? So not cool. I would be in sooooo much trouble right now. And all he is doing is sitting there smiling at you like he is proud or something. And I'm almost positive you just walked THROUGH that door. This dont not make any sense!"

I begin to laugh. This all seems so silly. How could all these things I just thought in my head be happening right in front of my eyes. Hmm.. I wish Ana would try it.

Slowly Ana stood and walked to the front door. Her face smacked right into it. I began laughing so hard that I had tears rolling down my cheeks. Dad's mouth was wide as he ran to her.

"Ana why did you do that," he asked her, sounding shocked.

She shook her head. "I wanted to do what Victoria did."

"What," he said turning towards me.

I straightened and stopped laughing. "What did you do?"

"I walked through the door. Didn't you see?" I replied.

"Well of course you did. How else would you get in here?" His tone was angry. He was irritated.

I shrugged and looked at my feet. Ana stood and walked over to me. Her long skinny fingers fit with mine as she grabbed me and pulled me to her room. She walked me to her bed where she sat me down on her fluffy purple comforter. I looked around as she walked back to shut her door. Heroes from stories stare at me from every wall and every corner. She is way too obsessed.

She snaps her fingers in my face. "Hey. So tell me."

"Tell you what," I ask her waving finger, smiling.

She relaxed her hand to her side. "How did you come in the house without a drop of water on you?"

Thunder sounds through the house. I jump.

Ana's pale hand lands on my shoulder. "It's just thunder. Now tell me how."

I shake my head and close my eyes. "I don't know Ana. I was just walking and I thought to myself Oh hey, I do wish this rain was off of me and that is exactly what happened. I was suddenly dry. Just like that. And then I wished that dad wouldn't be mad. He wasn't. Then I wished you would try to walk through the door. You tried... It just didn't work." At that thought I smiled a little.

"Yes, I realized. Stop smiling idiot." SHe rolls her brown eyes.

"Hey. Be nice. I can control you," I laughed.

"What the heck Victoria. That's creepy. I wanted to try it. You didn't make me try it."

I raise an eye brow at her. "How do you know I didn't make you think you wanted to try it?"

She shrugged and pushed me hard.

I fell back on her soft bed. "I'm just sayin Ana."

"Well I don't know Vic. Are you like some lame super hero or something?"

"LAME," I yelled. "I think it's pretty cool."

"It's lame. You can control stuff and what not. But you can's fly or run really fast. You don't have amazing strength. You aren't like stretchable or anything like that. So whatever you have. It's lame."

"What do you have," I ask.

She laughs. "I have this."

Suddenly she is gone. Speed. Then she is back and she's floating. Feet touching absolutely nothing. Great she's flying. I stare at her.

"And I know that right now, in your head, you just said 'How the heck did I not see these things before?'"

She laughed at me as her feet made contact with the floor. "Well you didn't see them before because you'd tell everyone."

"No I wouldn't," I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Yes, you would have. I can tell when you're lying." A smug smile rose upon her face.

"So we can do things? Shouldn't you have told me so I could have tried to figure this out a while ago?"

"Now what fun would that have been," she laughs. "I figured out mine on my own. I also figured out how to control mine on my own. With no help from the lame My thoughts can control things girl that's sitting on my bed still wondering how she missed this."

Her smile was playful and it made me laugh. Usually I'd be mad at her for being smart with me but I could tell that this was the start of something fun. I knew if we could do things like this, other people could too. Just not in public I guess. Or maybe other people couldn't do things like this and I shouldn't tell anyone. I don't know but ohwell. My little sister can and that's for sure so I'm fine with just the two of us. It'll still be fun. I smiled to myself as she laid down beside me. We just stared at the poster on her ceiling until we both fell silently asleep.
