Chapter 28

(Jack's P.O.V.)

I sigh, putting my fork down.

"You okay there Jack?" Kate asks. I nod.

"I'm just not hungry." I say. Kate nods and goes back to eating. It's dinner, Saturday night, and my parents invited Kate over since she's still hanging out around town. They absolutely love the pork Ma made, but I just don't feel hungry. The three continue conversation, and I continue nodding when it's appropriate but otherwise ignoring the conversation. That is, until Kate turns to me.

"So, Jack, how's school been?" She asks. I stare at her. I'm not used to be called on at the table, and I do not like it. I think Kate picks up on this, which just makes her smile. We're best friends, and best friends love to annoy each other.

"You mean besides almost dying? Fine." I say, shrugging. I really don't want to be on the subject of my life cause my life is my life and I don't feel like sharing that with my family. Kate nods.

"Good, good. Find any girls you like?" She asks. I just stare at her. She did not just ask me that. Please tell me she did not just ask me that. But I know she did mainly because of Dad and Ma's hopeful stares as well. I shake my head.

"No. And who cares?" I ask. Dad sighs.

"Someday. I am determined to see you with a girl someday. A nice girl who I can talk too about art." He says. I close my eyes, groaning.

"Please stop." Is all I say, though I say it quietly. Ma ignores this and stays on the topic of the "perfect" date for me.

"Yes, an artsy girl. Oh, that would be perfect for you Sean. And if she loved to cook too, oh my god. It would be wonderful." Ma says. I bite my lip. Kate chuckles.

"The only girl I see Jack with is a girl that likes music and fits his standards." She says. I sigh, mixing another groan in there as well, trying to show my agony. It fails apparently. Or it works and they ignore it or take pleasure in seeing me in agony.

"Art, music, cooking and standards. Perfect girl for..." I cut Dad off.

"You." I say. I open my eyes to see the three looking at me. I shrug. "Everything you just said I don't necessarily care about in a date. That's stuff you three care about." I say simply. The three just stare at me. Ma then sighs.

"I guess you're right. You'll find a girl soon enough though, won't you?" She says. I scoff.

"No promises." I mutter. God, if they found out about Brittany though they would try with all their might to get us together. Oh god, please please please don't find out about Brittany.

"Hey, what about that girl that stopped you on the way to the car? Brittany I think I heard you say?" Dammit. I shake my head.

"Nope." Is all I say. Though Ma and Dad are already asking Kate questions about this mystery girl. Kate shrugs.

"I didn't stick around. He told me to go to the car. But she looks pretty, athletic, she had a cheerleader uniform on. You guys didn't talk long but it looked like it was a good conversation." I have to stifle my laughter at this. "No, I mean, if we find out more about her I can totally see her being a perfect date for Jack." Kate finishes and I shake my head. Please just shut up. Ma nods.

"Yes, of course. Ah! We'll have to find out more." She says. Dad nods as well.

"Yes, I'd love to know more about this Brittany." He says. I raise my hand a bit.

"May I speak?" I ask. The three turn to me. I lower my hand. "Thank you. You see, I know Brittany and no way am I ever, ever going to date her. Learn all you want about her, but it is never going to happen." I say. Kate smirks.

"That sounds like someone who already has a crush. Who is it?" She asks. Ma gasps.

"Really? You do? Oh, honey, please tell us her name." She says. Dad chuckles.

"Don't bother telling us her name, invite her over!" He says. I shake my head and get up without another word.

"Sean!" Ma calls.

"Jack come on." Kate says. I just keep walking towards my room.

"Nope! I'm done!" I say and I run up the stairs. I slam my bedroom door shut and I plug my phone in, blasting my music like normal. Ah a meal in the life of me. Isn't it fun?
