12 | The Secret is Out

2015 Tree Hill, North Carolina

Dear Lucas,
I'm not sure what number letter this is, but I do have a secret I've been holding back from writing, maybe writing it out will be helpful, I'm not sure, but here it goes. I think I have an eating disorder. From all the things I've researched, it seems I have bulimia nervosa, but obviously, I haven't told anyone. Things get so hard at home, that I just turn to food for comfort whenever my parents stress me out or make me sad, but then I feel so bloated and heavy, and want it all gone. So, I go to my bathroom, on my knees in front of my toilet, and use my spare toothbrush to make myself throw it all backup. Obviously, I can't diagnose myself, but the signs are all there, and I know it's getting worse. I know I should tell someone, but in a convoluted kind of way, I think I deserve it. I know that doesn't make sense, it barely makes sense to me as I write it, but it's just how I feel. I don't know if I'll get over it, but I also don't know if I want to right now. How sick does that make me? If this makes you disgusted to the point that you don't want to keep reading the letters, I get it. But if we were ever going to get to know each other, you would've found this out eventually. Thanks for being able to be trusted with my secret.
Logan S.

Through a series of events, Logan found out that Brooke was no longer speaking to Peyton. She found out that while Brooke and Lucas were dating, Peyton got a call one night that her Dad might have been killed during a work accident, and she had to go identify to see if the body they found was her Dad. Lucas offered to go with her so she didn't have to do it alone. They stayed overnight in a motel and almost slept together. They stopped when Peyton's hair got caught in a puka shell necklace that Brooke had gotten for Lucas. Then, when they came back to Tree Hill, they were still sneaking around behind Brooke's back and Lucas broke up with Brooke after the car accident, Logan knew that last part.

Then Brooke found out that the real reason Lucas broke up with her was because of Peyton because she saw them together on Peyton's webcam. So now Brooke hates Peyton and Lucas, while Peyton misses her best friend and regrets the decisions she made, and Lucas feels like the biggest asshole on the planet. Logan was trying to stay out of it and not pick sides. The situation had nothing to do with her, so she wasn't going to cut off Brooke or Peyton for the sake of the other one.

Logan was also a lot happier staying with Keith. Her urges to binge have subsided because she hasn't been as stressed out from being dragged into the middle of her parent's divorce, and she felt so much better. However, Keith was still encouraging her to keep a relationship with her Mom. She spoke with Nathan every day, in school and outside of school on the phone, and the two planned a visit with their Mom together.

They pulled up to their house at the same time. Logan was in the same car she's always had, a 2015 Kia Telluride, whereas Nathan was in a brand new black sports car that Logan immediately knew was from their Dad. When the siblings got out of the car, Logan raised an eyebrow and pointed to Nathan's car.

"Dad?" She asked and Nathan nodded.

"You know," He said. Logan shook her head as the two of them hugged, and then walked to the front door together. Deb was already standing there because she heard the cars pull up.

"Hey," Deb greeted her kids.

"Hey," Nathan and Logan said together.

"Welcome home. I missed you guys," She said.

"It's only been a week, Mom," Logan said.

"I'm sorry for the way things ended the last time," She said. Nathan and Logan shrugged it off. They figured if their Mom wasn't going to tell them the truth, they weren't going to beg for it.

"Whatever," Nathan said. Deb looked over their shoulders and saw the sports car Nathan pulled up in. Logan could see she was trying to cover the shock and disappointment in her eyes.

"Nice car. Did Dan give it to you?" Deb asked.

"Yeah. So?" Nathan asked.

"I just never considered him bribing you. You know, it's a little hard to compete on that level," Deb tried to frame it as a joke, but Nathan and Logan didn't think it was funny, and Logan was close to regretting the decision to come here.

"I didn't want this, Mom. Neither of us did. We gave you the chance to come clean with us, but you didn't want to do that," Nathan said and Logan nodded.

"You have to believe me. I'm only trying to protect you," Deb said.

"From what? What could be worse than this, Mom?" Logan asked. When Deb remained silent, Nathan and Logan sighed while Nathan shook his head. "You know what? Fine. If you want to keep your secrets, go ahead and do that. I guess this means we all lose," Logan said as she brushed past Deb to go upstairs to her room. She heard Nathan's footsteps behind her. She couldn't wait for the weekend to be over.

She wanted to go back to Keith's.

⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎

Karen invited Logan over to have dinner in the cafe with her, Haley, and Lucas. Logan immediately agreed. Nathan had left to go meet up with Roman, they were hanging out at Josh's apartment, so Logan wanted any excuse to get out of the house.

"I can't remember the last time we did this," Karen said as they began to eat. Haley nodded.

"Yeah, it's just like old times. Plus one sister and minus one spleen," Haley said. Lucas wasn't entirely entertained by the spleen joke. "Oh, come on, it's a joke. Haha, alright, too soon," Haley said. Logan smiled at Haley and then she watched Lucas try to reach out for some of the food, but then he winced and pulled his arm back.

"Are you overdoing it at physical therapy?" Logan asked softly. She knows what it's like. When she broke her leg and had to do physical therapy, the first few weeks, sucked and her leg was so sore.

"Physical therapy is a waste of time," Lucas said. His tone was a bit hard and Logan sighed.

"Alright, let's try something else. How was school?" Karen asked.

"Well, let's see. Brooke hates me and Peyton won't talk to me," Lucas said and Logan frowned. She does let her friends vent to her, but she wasn't going to interfere on anyone's behalf, Brooke's, Lucas', or Peyton's. She wanted to stay as out of it as she could.

"See... it's just like old times, we just have an extra Scott at the table," Haley said as she smiled at Logan and Logan smiled back. Since Haley has been training her as a server at the cafe, they've been getting to know each other, and they both apologized again for judging each other too harshly when they first met. Logan liked that they were getting closer, and she was gaining another female friend.

"Oh, and you know what else? I saw Dan and he told me the reason he pulled me out of the wreckage was just so he could watch me suffer," Lucas said and Logan shook her head. She knew her Dad didn't mean it, he just wanted to mess with Lucas' head and it worked.

"Lucas, I'm sure that's not true," Karen said.

"Mom, don't defend him," Lucas said.

"I believe that he said it, but he didn't mean it. At least not how you think, and I'm not defending him, but everything with Dan is a manipulation tactic. He probably only said it to mess with your head," Logan offered softly. She knew Lucas was pissed and he had every right to be, but she wanted to try and calm things down.

"Logan is right. I'm not saying that Dan hasn't done some terrible things, but he did save your life. No matter his reasons or motivations, I will always be grateful that he saved your life," Karen said.

"Whatever that's worth," Lucas said while shaking his head.

"Oh snap out of it already. Come on," Haley snapped.

"You know what? You're right. It's time. Time for a change," Lucas said as he stood up from the table. Logan knew he was about to storm out, she'd seen Nathan do this exact same thing during an argument with their parents a million times.

"Where are you going?" Karen asked.

"Out," Lucas snapped before throwing the door open.

"Luke!" Haley called out after him.

"Don't wait up!" He snapped, and then he was gone. Haley and Karen both turned to Logan.

"I'm sorry you had to see that, Logan," Karen said and Logan shook her head.

"Nothing I haven't seen from Nathan a million times," She said, making Haley laugh. Logan laughed along with her.

"He's just upset about what's going on with Brooke and Peyton, but taking it out on the rest of us," Haley said and Logan nodded.

"Yeah, I've been trying to stay as out of that as I possibly can," Logan said and Haley laughed as she shook her head.

"I don't blame you," Haley said and Logan turned to Karen.

"Thank you for inviting me to dinner. Besides the storming out, it's been nice," Logan said and Karen smiled.

"Of course, you're welcome for dinner anytime. I'll let you and Haley hang out while I clean up," Karen said as she stood up.

"Are you sure you don't want any help?" Logan asked and Karen shook her head.

"You're both off the clock. Enjoy your food."

⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎

After dinner, Logan went back to her Mom's house. She told Nathan how Lucas stormed out, and what Dan said about pulling him out of the accident, which Nathan agreed was messed up and Dan probably trying to mess with his head. Peyton texted Logan to say she and Brooke found out where Lucas went, but when he left the bar he was at, he left his sling and he didn't leave alone. Logan put that out of her mind and she was playing NBA 2k with Nathan, and he was beating her.

Badly.

"Nate, Lo. Can we talk for a minute?" Deb Scott's voice rang from the doorway. Nathan paused the game and they turned to her. "I don't want to keep secrets from either of you, so I'm telling you this because I think you deserve to know the truth," She said. Nathan completely shut off the game and turned off his TV, and the siblings gave their Mom their full attention.

"Okay... what's up?" Logan asked.

"A while ago, your father and I were having some serious trouble because of something else that I will tell you after I explain this... during this trouble, I met someone else. I left your father to be with this man," Deb said. Logan's eyes widened. So there are two secrets that Deb is keeping.

"When?" Nathan asked.

"A few years back. Nate, you were at basketball camp for the summer and Logan was at cheer camp," Deb said. Nathan and Logan looked at each other, they remembered the summer their Mom was talking about.

"When we came back from our camps, Dad told us you were gone on a business trip," Logan said. Their Dad was horrible that summer, more horrible than he normally is. Logan spent a lot of time with Keith while Nathan spent a lot of time with Roman so they could get away from Dan.

"Please understand, I was confused and selfish. As soon as I realized I might risk losing the two of you forever, I called it off and came back, but I haven't forgiven myself," Deb said. Nathan started to pack up his bag. "You don't know how hard it's been for me to live with this guilt," Deb said.

"Hard for you!? Dad was a nightmare that summer, Mom. You know that, and all those nights Logan and I called you. I almost had to fight Dad because he almost hit Logan. We called you that night, and you didn't come home because you were off with some guy!? Don't you see what you did? You gave us up to him, Mom. You knew exactly how he was and you made us his property," Natan snapped.

"Oh, I never thought that...-" Nathan cut his Mom off.

"...-Everything he's turned me into! All of this. This is your fault," Nathan snapped.

"That's why I came home. For the two of you!" Deb exclaimed.

"No, no, you didn't come home for us. You came home because your fling ended. Just forget it. I don't want to be part of this family anymore. Go ahead and tell us the second thing," Logan said.

"The second thing?" Deb asked.

"You said that you and Dad were having serious trouble because of something else that had happened. What was it?" Logan asked. Deb sighed as she looked between her kids. She knew telling them this was going to change their lives forever, but they needed to hear it from her and not hear it in court.

"Logan...-" Nathan cut Deb off.

"...-Answer her, Mom. You said you were going to tell us everything," Nathan said.

"You two don't understand. This will ruin everything," Deb said as she shook her head.

"Help us understand, Mom! I'm tired of the secrets and lies. How can whatever you're holding onto ruin things more than they already are!?" Logan asked. Deb took a deep breath, the tears flowing down her eyes as she prepared herself to ruin her children's lives forever.

"Logan... you're not my daughter," Deb said.

As soon as the words registered in Logan's ears, she felt as if a weight had been dropped on her chest. She was stunned to silence. "Mom... what are you talking about? Logan's my twin. How is she not your daughter?" Nathan asked.

"Because she's not your twin, Nathan," Deb said. The second blow came and Logan felt like she couldn't breathe.

"What!?" Nathan yelled. He looked over at Logan who was frozen on his bed. She wasn't moving, she wasn't blinking, Nathan couldn't even be sure if she was breathing. She looked like a statue.

"When Logan was three months old, your father went to Karen's house and forcibly took her from Karen once I brought you home from the hospital. He wanted the two of you to be raised together," Deb said. Logan finally blinked. She turned her head from staring at Nathan's wall to looking at her Mom.

"So you're saying... Logan and Lucas are twins?" Nathan asked and Deb nodded.

"This isn't how I wanted the two of you to find out. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," Deb sobbed and something inside of Logan snapped. She went from shocked to angry.

"Are you kidding me!? How could you let Dan do that? How could you go along with this for 17 years knowing you were raising a child that wasn't yours!? And then you go into business with Karen? Were you trying to rub more salt into the wound!? What's wrong with you!?" Logan was now screaming.

"Logan! No, it wasn't like that. Just like Dan threatened Karen to take you, he threatened me too. There was one day when I tried to take you back to Karen and Dan caught me. He said if I ever tried to tell anyone the truth or take you back to Karen again, he would take you and Nathan and I'd never see either of you again," Deb said. Logan broke down into heavy sobs onto Nathan's bed. Nathan looked at his Mom and shook his head.

"Mom, please, just... get out, please," Nathan said. Deb nodded and left her son's room. Nathan immediately wrapped his arms around his sister as she sobbed, his own eyes starting to water. He grew up with Logan, she's his best friend, his twin sister, or so he thought. He knew this changed everything, but it also changed nothing, not for him. Logan is still his sister, he still loves her and trusts her more than anybody, but he knows everything just changed for her.

"This doesn't change anything, Lo. Not for me. You're my sister. Whether my half-sister or my twin sister, you're my sister, and that's the only thing that matters to me. I love you more than anyone in this world, this won't change anything, I promise," Nathan whispered as he kissed the top of her head. Logan continued to cry as she clung to him. She appreciated that it wouldn't change anything for Nathan.

But she knew nothing would ever be the same for her.

⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎

When Logan was able to calm down, she called Roman and asked if he would meet her at the River Court. She didn't know if she could go back to Keith's, because she was sure that he knew the truth and had known the whole time. The pair were the only ones at the River Court and Logan was grateful that Lucas and his friends weren't there.

As they sat in the half-court circle, Logan told Roman everything that Deb told them, first about the affair she had that summer when they were at their respective camps, by the end of the story, Roman was shocked. "I wasn't expecting that," He said.

"Neither was I. Now Nathan and I know why our Dad was such a nightmare that summer. Our Mom had left him for some guy," Logan said as she took a sip of her coffee. They stopped at Karen's Cafe on the way and Roman bought her some coffee. But he could tell that something else was going on. Logan looked exhausted, and not in the normal way school and cheerleading exhaust someone, but her body language was sunken as if she was trying to disappear into herself.

"Lo... you're telling me one thing, but your body language is telling me another. What's going on?" Roman asked.

"Leave it to Dr. Psychology to figure it out," She teased and Roman smiled. "Okay... you can't tell anyone. I'm sure Nathan will tell Haley, as long as she doesn't tell Lucas because we're both still processing this," Logan said and Roman nodded.

"You have my word, I won't tell anyone. I'll only talk about it with you and Nathan," He said and Logan nodded.

"The other secret my Mom was holding onto is that... I'm not Nathan's twin. Dan forcibly took me from Karen when I was three months old, on the day Mom brought Nathan home from the hospital," Logan said. She thought she was going to start crying again, but she realized she was dried out, she had nothing left in her to cry with. Roman's eyes widened.

"What?" He heard what she said, but he was so shocked, that was the only thing he could come up with.

"For 17 years, I've been raised by another woman, with my biological Mom still living in the same town. I've been celebrating my birthday on the wrong day. My Dad tried to condition me to hate my own twin brother. Could my life get any more screwed up?" Logan asked. Roman frowned as he grabbed her hand.

"I'm so sorry, Lo. I can't even imagine what you're feeling right now," He said.

"I feel like everything I know is a lie. If my parents could lie to me for 17 years about something this big... What else have they been lying to me about?" She asked.

"Do you think Lucas knows?" He asked and Logan shook her head.

"No... if he knew, he either would've told me by now or tried to encourage his Mom to. This is so weird, do I call Karen Mom? Do I call my Mom Deb? I don't know what to do," Logan said as she shook her head. The pair saw the headlights before the car and knew something else was pulling up to the River Court, when the headlights shut off, she recognized the car as Nathan's and she let out a breath of relief.

But then Nathan and Haley got out.

She figured Nathan would tell Haley what was going on, she is his girlfriend, but as long as she didn't tell Lucas, Logan figured they should be okay for now. Nathan and Haley walked over to Roman and Logan and joined them on the half-court.

"Hey, Nate... Logan just told me everything," Roman said.

"Nathan told me the same," Haley said and then she looked at Logan. "And don't worry, I won't tell Lucas. This isn't my secret to tell him, it's his Mom's. How are you guys doing with it?" Haley asked. Nathan and Logan looked at each other and Logan shook her head.

"Not good," Logan said.

"Our Mom cheated on our Dad, and then they've been lying to Logan and me for our entire lives about who she was, and... how do you even process something like that?" Nathan asked and Logan shrugged.

"By never speaking to either of them again?" Logan said and Nathan laughed a little.

"We actually came here because Haley and I were talking, and she told me since we're 17, we can legally emancipate ourselves from Mom and Dad. All we have to do is present our case to the judge, and with everything we just found out... there's no way we won't win," Nathan said and Logan nodded.

"That sounds like a fantastic idea... but where are you gonna live?" Logan asked.

"I've been looking at apartments, and hey listen. If you want to stay with me, you can, but if you want to stay with Uncle Keith, I get it," He said and Logan sighed.

"I'm sure Keith is another adult who knew about this, so I'll see how I feel when I talk to him and let you know," Logan said and Nathan nodded.

"We'll get through this, okay?" Nathan said as he reached for her hand. Logan nodded and squeezed his hand in hers. Roman and Haley smiled at the siblings.

"And you know Haley and I are here for you guys, whatever you need," Roman said and Haley nodded in agreement.

"Thanks... I don't think either of us would've been able to get through this without the two of you," Logan said and Nathan nodded in agreement.

"She's right," He said and Haley smiled.

"I brought some cards, we could play a game to take your minds off of it," Haley suggested and Logan smiled while nodding her head.

"Let's play spades."

⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎

After they played a few rounds of Spades, the siblings were feeling a little bit better, but overall, they still felt horrible. First, they went to meet with a lawyer and told their stories about what happened. He said they do have strong cases and would be granted emancipation, or Logan could file for Karen to be her legal guardian since she is her biological mother. Logan said she'll go for emancipation since they are almost 18. Then they came back to their Mom's house.

When they walked into the dining room where Deb was sitting, Nathan set a thick folder down on the table. "What's this?" Deb asked.

"We're filing for emancipation from you and Dad," Nathan said.

"What?" Deb asked.

"We talked to a lawyer. He said that Nathan and I have strong cases. Nathan will be getting his own apartment, and I will either move in with him or continue to live with Uncle Keith," Logan snapped and Deb's eyes fell as Nathan spoke.

"How does it feel to be abandoned, Mom?"

⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎

Logan took a deep breath when she walked into Keith's apartment. He was sitting on the couch, flipping through TV channels, but he muted the TV when he heard Logan walk in. "Lo, I know I'm not your parent, and I'm not going to put a lot of rules on you, but at least let me know when you're coming home late," Keith said.

"Oh, like you let me know that Karen is actually my biological Mom and not Deb?" Logan shot out before she could stop herself. She knew that wasn't fair, but she was just so angry now that all the tears had gotten out of her system. Keith shut off the TV completely and stood up.

"Logan," He said and she shook her head.

"You knew the whole time?" She asked and Keith nodded as he sighed. "That's why you spent all that time trying to encourage me to spend time with Lucas and see what happened. Was nobody going to tell me the truth?" Logan asked.

"It wasn't for me to tell you. It had to be your parents or Karen," Keith said and Logan shook her head.

"I don't believe that. You were there when Lucas and I were born, right? You could've done something, said something! Stopped your brother," Logan said.

"It was more complicated than that, Lo... I drank a lot more back then than I do now and Danny would've used it against me," Keith said and Logan shook her head.

"Not good enough," Logan said.

"I know it's not. I know I should've done something to stop Dan, but, he seemed to have an answer for everything," Keith said.

"He was 17!" Logan yelled. She started to go from angry to pissed. "He was a teenager, a minor. Couldn't you have gotten Grandma and Grandpa involved!?" Logan asked and Keith sighed.

"I'm sorry, Logan," Keith said and Logan shook her head as she rubbed her eyes. She didn't want to cry again.

"I'm sorry too, Uncle Keith... I think I'm going to help Nathan find an apartment and go live with him," Logan said and Keith nodded. He understood. He always knew and anticipated that Logan and Lucas would be upset with him when she found out the truth.

"I understand... but keep your key. You're always welcome here, kiddo," He said. Logan nodded as she went to her room and closed the door behind her.

Then she broke down into tears again.

⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎⇎
