[ Prologue ]

❝Wait, where did Spencer and Alison go?❞

It was Labor Day weekend, aka the last free weekend before school started. It was a weekend to let loose before the stress of the new school year started. Six teenage girls were currently gathered in the barn behind one of the girls' house. Well, it was supposed to be six, however, one of them hadn't shown up yet. Although the other girls knew that she would show up eventually, she always did.

The five girls were laughing as they blasted loud music from a speaker. They passed around several cups that they had filled with alcohol stolen from Spencer Hastings' family's liquor cabinet. It was Spencer Hastings' house and since her family wasn't home, the girls basically had free range of the kitchen and had raided it before gathering in the barn.

The lights suddenly shut off and all the girls suddenly went quiet. Diana turned off the music as they all looked at each other. The sound of the rain and the thunder got louder as the girls sat in silence for a minute before Emily Fields spoke up.

"Whoa, what happened?"

"It must be the storm." Spencer looked around and found the candles that she had set aside in case the power went out.

Aria Montgomery and Diana Bryant grabbed the flashlights from the floor where they'd been sitting and switched them on.

There was a creak from outside and the girls all froze.

"Something's out there." Aria whispered.

"Or someone." Diana added.

The barn door creaked open but no one was out there.

"Guys?" Hanna Marin's eyes widened as she looked at the rest of the girls who were all still sitting. All of the girls slowly stood up then and started creeping towards the door, holding onto each other. Diana gripped onto her flashlight, prepared to use it as a weapon if need be.

Suddenly there was the sound of glass breaking, though none of them knew where it had come from, but it made all of them scream and then jump. However, no one appeared so they kept inching towards the door. When they had almost reached it, someone jumped through causing all five girls to scream once again in unison.

"Gotcha!" A blonde girl in a yellow top laughed at the other five girls.

The five girls relaxed, noticing it to be Alison Dilaurentis, aka the sixth best-friend and leader of their group.

"That was so not funny, Alison." Spencer scolded.

Diana and the others all sighed in relief though. Diana should have known that it was Alison, because she definitely loved to pull these kinds of pranks, but despite her doing it hundreds of times, Diana still hated it.

"I thought it was hilarious, girls." Alison said, linking arms with them and leading them back over to the seats.

Diana sat down on the couch next to Hanna and Spencer, vacating a spot for Alison to sit in. Diana curled her legs underneath her as she just watched as they all talked.

"Have you downloaded the new Beyonce yet?" Hanna asked.

Alison sat down in a chair, "No not yet."

"I'm loving her new video!" Emily grinned at them.

"Maybe a little bit too much, Em." Alison said, and Diana furrowed her brows at her.

Despite being friends with Alison and the group for awhile, Diana didn't feel close to Alison. In fact, she felt like she and the others were often manipulated by her, but most of them were too scared to speak up because when they did they were either yelled at by her or frozen out for awhile, and they liked being a part of a group too much.

Emily deflated at Alison's comment but no one asked what Alison meant by it and Emily didn't look like she wanted to talk about it either.

Alison handed Aria one of the red cups filled with alcohol, "Your turn Aria."

Aria gave a small timid smile and took a large sip of it.

"Careful Aria, take too much and you'll tell us all your secrets." Spencer joked, sending the other girls into a fit of giggles.

Alison though had a genuine smile on her face as she leaned forward, "Friends share secrets. That's what keeps us close."

All the girls stopped giggling and stared at her with small smiles. Yeah, they all liked being a part of that group.

"Di. Di, wake up." Diana felt someone shaking her.

Diana realized that they had all fallen asleep and Aria was shaking her awake. She had no idea what time it was but it was still dark outside so Diana figured not too much time had passed. Diana looked beside her to see Hanna had fallen asleep on her, her head on her lap.

"What?" Diana asked, rubbing her eyes as she sat up, trying to focus on her friend, "What's going on?"

Emily and Hanna were currently fast asleep but Spencer and Alison were nowhere to be found. The barn door was wide open.

"Wait, where did Spencer and Alison go?" Diana asked.

"I don't know." Aria shook her head.

Diana sighed, "Maybe they just went to the bathroom, inside the house."

"Maybe." Aria said but it was clear that she didn't think that.

"Okay fine. Let's wake Hanna and Emily up." Diana said, immediately shaking Hanna awake, "Han. Wake up."

"What?" Hanna lifted her head from Diana's lap as she looked around, squinting, "Wait where's Ali and Spencer?"

"We don't know." Aria said, as she shared a look with Diana.

Diana grabbed the flashlight that she had dropped next to her, and followed Aria who had started towards the door.

A figure suddenly came into view and both girls asked in unison, "Ali?"

The figure turned out to be Spencer as she walked into the barn, "She's gone."

"What do you mean she's gone?" Aria asked while Diana asked at the same time, "Where did she go?"

"I don't know. I've looked everywhere for her." Spencer paused as she looked at every girl in turn before answering, "I think I heard her scream."
