Chapter One

"Scott, Kirstie! It's time for school!"

Avi looked upstairs, hearing giggling someplace in the house. He smiled as he shook his head, walking up to find his children. Not that he needed to look for them since he already knew where they were. They are both six years old, but they aren't that smart at finding clever places to hide.

"I'm going to getcha!"

"Not you're not!"

"Kirstie, shut up!"

"You shut up!"

Avi smirked when he heard their vices echoing in the bathroom. He made his steps quieter, making sure that his kids didn't hear him. He put his ear on the door, hearing Kirstie's giggles echo through the bathroom.

"I think he can't find us!"

"Yay!"

Avi opened the door, causing the whispering to stop. He walked over to the bathtub, the curtain covering it from all who could see. He could his children's breathing, putting his hand on the curtain.

"Maybe if we say quiet, he won't find us."

"I like that idea!"

"Found you!"

Avi opened the shower curtain, causing his children to scream. He laughed loudly, shaking his head as his children refused to leave the bathtub.

"Come on, kiddos. It's the first day of school. It's time to go."

"I hate school," Scott whined loudly, crossing his arms. He huffed loudly, shaking his head. "I'm only six! School is for grown ups."

"I went to school when I was your age," Avi told his oldest child,  laughing when the small blond widened his eyes. "Let's get out of the bathtub now. I'll get ice cream at the end of the day."

"Ice cream," Kirstie exclaimed, hopping out of the tub. She grabbed Scott's hand, smiling at him. "Come on, Scott! Ice cream!"

"Fine," Scott mumbled, smiling nonetheless. He went out of the bathtub, smiling up at his dad. "Dad, what is your job?"

"I work with children who are hurt by their parents. I help them find better homes."

Avi worked as a child psychologist that helped children who suffered from abuse. So far, he has helped a number of children find better places for them to live while trying to keep them in the school they go to. He rarely had to move a child to a different state or town, but if he did he did it for the child. He didn't know how to describe his job to his children because they firm understand why abuse was. They did know that if they were older and someone that they were dating hurt them, they would have to report it right away. That's all Avi had told them so far and he plans to explain abuse to his children when they were older.

"Where is my family?"

Avi smiled when he ears his husbands voice as Scott and Kirstie ran downstairs, hugging Kevin's legs when they go to the bottom. Kevin smiled as he looked down at kids, shaking his head.

"How are Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum doing?"

"Good."

"We just don't want to go to school."

"Your teacher is Miss. Kelly though! You love her!"

"Not as much as you."

Avi smiled when heard that, walking up to Kevin. They shared a quick kiss, looking down at their crazy children. They shook their heads, looking out of the window when the bus beeped its horn.

"Time to go to school," Avi announced, getting their backpacks. Scott and Kirstie retrieved their backpacks from their dad, ready for school now. "Papa will be driving you home."I'll see you two later."

"Okay," Kirstie told her dads, smiling up at them. "I love you."

"I love you too, sweetie."

Scott smiled up at his dads, hugging them once more before he had to go. He took Kirstie's hand, looking back at his dads.

"I love you."

"I love you too, sport."

The kids walked to the bus, holding onto each other's hands while Kevin sighed happily. He took out his paper to see which students he will have this year, hoping it will be a good class. He's a kindergarten teacher and he loves working with little kids. He looked over the list, stopping at one name in practicable.

Mitchell Grassi, age five

"Avi," Kevin called out, getting his husband's afternoon. Avi nodded, looking at the piece of paper. "I have Mike and Nel's kid in my class this year."

"Really? Wow."

Mike and Nel were good friends of the Olusola's. They used to hang out all the time before the Grassis moved down to Texas before Mitch was born. Now they're back, but why?

~~~
Mitch looked around the kitchen, making sure everything was clean. He nodded his head in approval and took a plate out of a cabinet, putting pancakes, eggs, and sausage on it. This was a chore for the small five year old. He made breakfast for his aunt and her boyfriend everyday and had to make sure that he didn't make a mess.
"Thank goodness I made them breakfast before they woke up."
That was another rule. He had to make breakfast for them before they woke up. He don't want to risk getting in trouble for doing the opposite of that. He put he plate on the table, his stomach growling just a bit.
I'm hungry. What is there to eat?
He walked away from his aunt and her boyfriend's breakfast, trying his best to find an apple that was old. He found the one that had the least brown, hoping that this would fill him up before he had to go back home.
"Let's hope for the best."
He picked up his backpack, hearing sounds from his aunt's room. He tensed, hoping that it wasn't about him. His heart dropped when he heard his name, wondering what will happen to him when he went back home.
"Probably nothing. Or maybe a chore."
He walked outside, the heavy door quite hard to open. He opened it with all his might, hoping that shutting it won't make his aunt's boyfriend, Paul, angry. He had anger issues and they scared Mitch to death.
"Let's go now, I guess."
Mitch began to walk, wondering where his school could be. He knew it wasn't that far away because his aunt, Lila, drove him to school during the summer and told him that he better have the route memorized because she wouldn't do it again.
"At least I know where it is."
He did know, but the only problem was that the walk was almost an hour long. He rarely made it when the bell rang, only running faster despite his heavy breathing and sweatiness.
"Please don't let me late! Please!"
He made it to school okay but stopped when he realized that no one was on the playground, meaning that he was all by himself. He frowned as he felt his eyes well up with tears, wiping his eyes.
"Where is everyone?"
"Hey, kid! You're supposed to be in class!"
Mitch looked up to find a yard duty glaring at him, looking at his feet immediately. The yard duty shook her hand and grabbed his arm, causing him to tense.
"What is your classroom number?"
"I-I don't know," Mitch answered quietly, taking out a piece of paper. The yard duty took it, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, miss."
"Sure you are. If you were, you would've made it to class on time."
Mitch yelped when the yard duty took him to a row of classrooms, wondering why the yard duty was being so rude to him. All he did was go to school late. That's not bad.
Right?
"Here's your classroom," the yard duty told him, shaking her head. Mitch nodded as she let go of his arm, rubbing it immediately. "Mr. Olusola, I have a kid here who was being stupid enough to not know where to go. What do you want to do?"
Mitch looked down at his feet, ashamed of his actions. He could hear the kids get quieter as they looked at him, waiting to see if he will get punished on the first day of school. He could hear footsteps walking up to him and saw someone squat in front of him, causing him to look up and come face to face with a kind face.
"I don't think he should be punished. He's only in kindergarten," Kevin told the yard duty, shaking his head when she scoffed and left. He looked back at the little kid, smiling happily. "My name is Mr. Olusola! I am your kindergarten teacher. What's your name?"
Mitch smiled as he looked back at his feet, his shyness making a special appearance. Kevin waited patiently for his response, his jaw almost dropping at the answer.
"Mitch Grassi."
