Chapter Nine

The sound of the heart monitor was what scares Avi the most. Mitch was asleep, his eyelashes long and almost reaching his cheeks. Now that Avi could actually see what Mitch held under his clothes, it scared the psychologist. Scars and burns covered the little boy's arms, cuts as long as Avi's pinkie finger to his middle finger scattered all over the small legs. Bruises and what appeared to be hickies were on the little boy's neck, making Avi infuriated at Lila and Paul.

Especially Paul.

Who gives a five year old hickies?!

"Mr. Olusola?" A nurse asked quietly, a police officer behind him. Avi nodded, turning away from Mitch for a second. "Mitch must be asked questions now."

"Oh, okay," Avi replied, turning back to the small child. It broke his heart to wake up Mitch, but he had to do it. "Mitchy? You have to wake up."

Mitch's eyes flew open, breathing heavily as he blankly stared at the roof. Avi put a gentle hand on Mitch's arm, becoming worried as the little boy began to cry.

"Please don't put me in the Room! I overslept! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so-"

"Shhh," Avi whispered, brushing thebrunet hair back. Mitch looked up at him, calming down a bit. "It's okay. You're not in trouble. A nice man just wants to talk to you."

Mitch looked away from Avi, making eye contact with the policeman. He looked down at his lap, hugging the stuffed doll Kevin bought him. He waved shyly, partially hiding his face from the policeman's stare.

"Hello, Mitchell. I'm Officer Gordon. I need to ask you some questions, okay? We'll be done in no time."

"I-if I answer one wrong, do I have to go in the freezer with water on me?"

Avi looked over at Officer Gordon, his eyes wet with tears. The officer shook his head, thinking about his own five year old. He could imagine his son going through the same pain Mitch does. Kevin walked in, sitting right next to Avi as Officer Gordon looked back at Mitch.

"No, of course not, kiddo. You are not going to be punished anymore, okay?"

Mitch stuck out his pinkie, hugging the doll close to him. Avi put his head on Kevin's shoulder, trying his best not to cry loudly. Kevin wrapped an arm around his husband's shoulders, crying quietly as Officer Gordon looked at the small pinkie.

"Pinkie promise?"

"Pinkie promise. Now, let's begin. Mitch, could you remember the first time Paul...played the game?"

"I just turned four. It was my birthday present from him."

Avi started do cry, shaking his head as Mitch held onto the doll tighter. Officer Gordon wrote something down, looking up to see the doll in Mitch's hands. He cleared his throat, pointing at the doll.

"Could you show me where Paul touched you while playing the game?"

Mitch nodded, pointing straight to the doll's chest. He put one finger on one side and moved to the other side. Mitch sighed to himself, pointing the front of the doll's pants and unbuttoned them, showing the officer how he was touched. He turned the doll over, putting his hands on the doll's bottom and squeezed them a bit, slapping one side hard. He turned the doll over once more, biting the doll's neck while the adult had tears rolling down their cheeks. Mitch hugged the doll, looking up at Officer Gordon innocently.

"Am I doing a good job?"

"You're doing a great job, Mitch. You look tired, kiddo. Do you want to go to sleep?"

"Could I stay on the bed? I don't want to sleep in the cage anymore."

"There's no more cage, no more game, and no more Room. You're safe now."

Mitch smiled, hugging the doll close to him. He fell asleep instantly, causing the adults to whisper.

"Will he have to testify in court?"

"Yes."

"He's five!"

"I know, but we have to. It's the only way we could win. I have to go now. Bye."

Officer Gordon left, causing Kevin and Avi to gather their own belongings. Scott and Kirstie are at their grandparents' house, unable to see Mitch in this condition. It wasn't until they heard a small voice, causing them to look back.

"Sleep on the bed with me. Please?"

Avi and Kevin couldn't say no. They laid down next to Mitch, smiling when the little boy closed his eyes and snored quietly. They shared a look, grateful that this little boy was still alive.

~~~
"Mr. Olusola? You have to go up to the office. Scott and Kirstie are in there."
Kevin widened his eyes, leaving his teacher partner with the kids. He walked to the office fast, shaking his head when he saw a tall blond and short brunette. He walked up to them, squatting down as he tried to contain his anger.
"What did you two do?"
"I'll answer that," the principal spoke up, shaking her head. She pointed at Scott almost venomously. "He thought it was a smart idea to almost throw someone's chicken nuggets! He was told five times to not throw it away! He didn't, but he was sent up to face consequences, which I hope you give him!"
She pointed over at Kirstie, her finger practically shaking with anger. Kevin stopped glaring at his kids, knowing why they were in trouble.
"This one took a belt from lost and found and started to throw it around! She almost hurt someone! Something is wrong with your children and I expect you to fix it!"
"Will do."
The principal slammed her door, causing Scott and Kirstie to tense. Kevin looked at them seriously, putting his hands on their small shoulders.
"You two are not in trouble. You just need to understand that what Mitch going through is not nice. You do not hurt others, okay?"
"Wait, what's happening with Mitch?" Scott asked, his voice quieter than usual. Kevin widened his eyes a bit, not knowing how to answer that. "Is he okay?"
"I-I...."
"Papa, what's wrong with Mitch?" Kirstie asked, her hazel eyes confused. She looked at Kevin, her forehead creased with worry. "Is he sick? Is that why he is in the hospital?"
"He's not sick, baby. Something just happened that made him like that."
"Is that why he was breathing weird?"
Scott asked, tilting his head a bit. Kevin nodded, going up to the front office to sign his kids out. "Papa, I have a question."
"Yes, Scott?"
"Could I marry Mitch? I already have the ring."
Kevin widened his eyes a bit, turning around to see Scott holding a Ring Pop. The blond smiled, his eyes lighting up at the thought of Mitch.
"Pleeeeaaassee? I want me and him to be like you and Daddy."
"First of all, it's him and I. Second of all, you're too young to be married. You could propose to right now, but you have to wait. You don't even have a real ring."
"You don't need a ring to show someone how much you want to marry them."
Kevin smiled, wondering how in the world he was given an incredible son. Both him and Avi knew that since Scott could walk, he never liked girls. He liked boys and talked about how he had little crushes boys all the time. Besides that, he was always accepting and wise. He never once looked at a person with a psychical disability weirdly nor judged one. He was just always a loving person. Avi and Kevin didn't deserve him.
"You're right, buddy. I didn't give your daddy a ring until we were married. We just drew hearts on our fingers."
"See?! I could give Mitchy a Ring Pop and ask him to marry me! Maybe when we are olderer, I could buy him a really ring!"
"I want someone to propose to me with a Ring Pop," Kirstie murmured, crossing her arms. Kevin laughed, shaking his head as he took his children's hands. "Hey, maybe I could propose to Ariana! She's pretty."
"Maybe. You two are six though. You don't need to worry about commitment just yet."
"Okay."
"Why are we leaving?"
"We're going to see Mitch, but please be quiet when you see him. He's a big scared of loud noises. We'll get something to eat on the way."
Scott and Kirstie cheered, their voices echoing in the hallway. Kevin shook his head, a smile on his face while his children spoke animatedly. He hopes that his children find people that will love them forever.
And he can't help but realize that Scott found his forever love.
Mitch.
~~~

"Is he still asleep?"

"Nope, he's wide awake. He's watching SpongeBob."

Scott and Kirstie ran in the room, apply to see their friend. Mitch sat up, a big smile on his face. He ate a French Fry, a Happy Kid's Meal on a tray over his bed.

"I missed you two!"

"We missed you two," Scott exclaimed, taking the Ring Pop out of his pocket. Mitch tilted his head, wondering why Scott took his hand. "Will you make me the happiest boy in the world and become my future husband?"

Avi looked over at Kevin, raising his eyebrow. Kevin laughed, looking back at the little boys. Kirstie watched SpongeBob, not paying attention to anything.

"I thought you could only propose if you were forty. I'm five "

"I'm six, but it's okay to break the rules sometimes. What do you say?"

"Yes. I will be your future husband."

Scott smiled, opening the wrapper and putting the RingPop on Mitch's fingers. Mitch licked at it, a big smile on his face as he looked at Scott. He stiffened when he felt Scott kiss him on his lips, smiling when he kissed back too. It was a simple kiss, but it was the start to a beautiful relationship.

"Sorry for kissing you. That's just how my daddies show each other love."

"It's okay. I liked it."

"Liked what?" Kirstie asked, looking at the newest 'couple'. Avi and Kevin laughed, walking up to the small children. "I want to know!"

"You'll know when you're older, hon."

"I'm older than Mitch!"

"I know."

Kirstie huffed but smiled as she saw the look of love Mitch had for her older brother. As much as she loved Mitch, she didn't want him to be her brother. If he was, then him and Scott will never get married and have children.

"Avi and Kevin Olusola? We need to talk to you."

The couple looked away from the kids, hoping that the kids were distracted by the T.V. They were, especially Scott and Mitch. Scott held onto Mitch's hand, kissing it gently every couple seconds. Avi and Kevin walked out the room, coming face to face with Lila and Paul. Lila was crying, pointing at the couple with a shaky finger.

"That's them! They kidnapped my child and accused me and my husband of hurting our child! They're the ones that hurt our little Mitchy!"

Avi and Kevin felt their hands going behind their backs, sharing a look of despair while they felt handcuffs in their wrists. The children continued to watch T.V, oblivious to the scene right in front of the door.

"Avriel and Kevin Olusola, you are arrested for the false accusation of Lila Smith and Paul Robinson and the psychical and sexual abuse of Mitchell Grassi."
