Five months later
"IS IT TRUE THAT YOU ABUSED MITCHELL?!"
"ARE YOU TWO GOING TO BE FIRED FROM YOUR JOBS?!"
"WHY WOULD YOU WORK AS A TEACHER AND PSYCHOLOGIST WHEN YOU ABUSED MITCH?!"
"ARE LILA SMITH AND PAUL ROBINSON GOING TO SUE YOH TWO?!"
Avi slammed the door, shaking his head. Five months have passed since Lila and Paul were arrested and Mitch has been living with them since then. It was a weird adjustment for all of them, especially Mitch. He needed someone to live with and since he didn't have any known relatives, Kevin and Avi took him in.
Big mistake.
Not that Mitch moving in was a mistake! They loved having Mitch living in their house; however, news got around town that Kevin and Avi were the ones that abused Mitch. No one besides their closest friends believed them.
Scott and Kirstie were bullied horrendously because of it and had no one to hang out with at school besides each other. Mitch wanted to be homeschooled because even though they were in jail, he didn't want to be kidnapped by them. He didn't want to go back.
Kevin and Avi were okay with it. They hired someone to be Mitch's teacher and they couldn't be anymore happy because of it. The teacher believed them and actually recommend his wide for being their lawyer. She knew how to win cases and she will not stop until they win.
"Mr. Avi?"
Avi looked down, Mitch's big brown eyes full with tears. Avi frowned, squatting down so he could look at the little boy.
"What's wrong, baby?"
Mitch sniffed, wiping his eyes before looking down at his feet. They were light-up Sketchers, something he has never had before. He wore them all the time and loved how pink they were. He took a deep breath, looking at Avi sadly.
"I made myself throw up. I'm sorry."
"Mitch, that's bad. Why did you do that?"
"Auntie Lila's voice is in my head."
Avi frowned, standing up and leading Mitch to the weighing machine. He picked Mitch up, putting him on the machine to see how much he weighed. After a minute, a number showed up.
36.6 pounds
Avi took a sigh of relief, happy that Mitch was okay. He was a tiny boy and didn't really gain that much weight in five months, but it was better than before. He had red on cheeks and he looked perfectly healthy. Besides the cuts on his body, he was okay.
Physically.
"I'm sorry, Daddy. I didn't mean to. I just feel like I need to lose weight. Please do-"
"Mitch, I'm not mad," Avi promised, looking at the broken boy in front of him. Mitch nodded, looking up at Avi shyly. "You're okay, baby. You're away from your auntie and Paul. They cannot hurt you anymore. You're free. You're no longer going to be hurt."
"Avi?"
"Dad?!"
"Daddy?!"
Avi smiled, taking Mitch's hand into his as they walked downstairs. Kevin looked serious, a Manila folder in hand. Scott and Kirstie ran over to Mitch, the three of them giggling as they ran upstairs. Avi widened his eyes a bit, looking at the folder in surprise.
"Is that-"
Kevin nodded.
"When is it?"
"Tomorrow at 3."
"Lila and Paul will be thrown in prison?"
"For a long time I hope."
Avi began to cry, happy for Mitch. He won't suffer anymore. Kevin hugged his husband, tears in his own eyes as he kissed Avi's forehead.
"No more, baby. Mitch will be okay."
~~~
"All rise."
The judge went to her seat, allowing everyone to sit down. Lila and Paul walked in, their orange jumpsuits making them look scarier than ever before. Mitch whimpered, being held by Avi right away.
"May the plaintiff come up?"
"That's you, Mitchy," Kevin whispered, taking Mitch off of his chair. Mitch held onto Kevin's hand, biting his finger nails nervously. "It's okay, Mitch. Avi and I will be right there watching you."
Mitch nodded, climbing onto the seat so he could be talked to. There was a phone book, law book, and a stuffed animal there for the small boy, making sure he saw the judge and that he didn't get scared. Mitch hopped onto the seat, squeezing the stuffed animal tightly as Lila and Paul's lawyer walked up. A place officer placed the Bible in front of him, making him out his right hand on it and his left one up.
"Do you swear to the tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"
"What does that mean? Who is truth? Are they nice?"
Everyone, especially Lila and Paul's lawyer and the judge, aw'ed a bit. The police man chuckled, thinking of something else to say.
"Do you promise to say what happened to you and tell it exactly how it happened?"
"I pinkie promise."
Mitch stuck out his pinkie, smiling when the police officer offered his pinkie. They pinkie swore, letting Lila and Paul's lawyer come up. He smiled a bit, looking at Mitch seriously.
"Hey, kiddo. I know it's scary up there. Are your auntie and her boyfriend mean? Did they hurt you terribly?"
Mitch nodded, squeezing the stuffed animal tightly. He could hear whispering in the crowd, wondering why they were talking when the lawyer was talking.
"Excuse me, people. You're not allowed to talk when other people are talking. That's what Mr. Olusola taught me."
Everyone smiled and laughed except for Paul and Lila. They both scoffed, shaking their heads at the boy. Kevin and Avi shared a look, smiling at the innocence Mitch withheld.
"Thank you, Mitch. Now, could you describe the abuse you endured? Who started it?"
"OBJECTION!"
"Shhhh," Mitch hissed, looking at his lawyer. She raised an eyebrow, quiet confused. "Use your inside voice. Yelling is for outside."
"Sorry, Mitch. Objection for both of the questions."
"Approved. Lawyer Bryant, please rephrase that."
"Okay. Why do you think the abuse started?"
"My auntie didn't like my mommy and she didn't like me. She wanted to prove that to me by hurting me. She also made Paul do it. He made me do big boy stuff."
The lawyer nodded, looking back at the other lawyer. She nodded too, taking off her cardigan to show her badge. Mitch saw the other lawyer take off his jacket, raising an eyebrow at the words on badge.
Undercover Cop: Protecting Children from Abuse
"That's all I needed to know," the undercover cop responded, smiling at Mitch sweetly. He walked over to Lila and Paul, shaking his head. "Lila and Paul, you are arrested and sentenced for life for killing Mike and Nel Grassi and neglecting and physically and sexually abusing Mitchell Grassi."
"THIS IS A SET-UP," Lila yelled, trying to fight back. Paul didn't so anything. "YOU BRAT! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"
Mitch shivered, still afraid of Lila and Paul. What happens if do try to kill him? He looked at the police man from earlier, pulling on his sleeve to get his attention. The police smiled at him, nodding as he waited for his response.
"Yes, Mitch?"
"Wha-what happens if they escape?"
"They won't, Mitchy. They're going to punished terribly. They won't get you. You're free."
Mitch smiled, hugging the police office tightly as Kevin and Avi walked up to him. He smiled at them, his smile genuine.
This is his first genuine smile in a long time.
"I'm free."
"Yeah you are," Kevin responded, noticing how the police officer was looking at Mitch with tears in his eyes. "Are you okay, sir?"
"Yes, I am, it's just...," the man took a deep breath, smiling at Mitch sadly. He looked back at Kevin and Avi, his big brown eyes similar to Mitch's. "I'm Mitch's older brother Joseph. I'm been looking for him everywhere. See?"
Joseph took a picture out of his wallet, handing the picture to Kevin. Kevin gasped, tearing up as he looked at the photo. It was Mike and Nel with Jessa, Joseph, and little Mitch. Joseph looked at least eighteen, his smile wide as he stood behind his family. This picture had to be at least five years old.
"I-I thought I lost him after the fire. I was in England when it happened and I couldn't see them. Lila and Paul killed my parents and little sister. Seeing Mitch makes me so happy. I thought I lost him too."
Joseph kissed Mitch's temple, tearing up as he looked at Kevin and Avi. They looked at each other, knowing that they can't keep Mitch for much longer.
"D-do you mind if I could, you know, let him live with me?"
"Of course not," Avi murmured, looking at Mitch one more time. Mitch smiled, holding onto his older brother. "Mitchy, you're going to live with him."
"Wait. Avi and Mr. Olusola?"
They nodded, smiling when Mitch hugged them around their necks. Before the brothers left, Mitch mumbled one last thing that both broke and mended Kevin and Avi's hearts.
"Thank you for making me happy again."
And Mitch and Joseph left.
