As the hollow sound of the stranger's horrible laughter filled Sophie's ears, her hopes rose- but her gut churned in sharp contrast. Why was he laughing? What was he going to do? 

She bit her lip in earnest, her eyelashes itching to be tugged. But her hands were bound- as were the rest of her body. Pulling at her thick binds, she looked up into the shadowed face of the unknown man. "Why are you laughing?" She demanded. When the elf didn't answer she shouted, desperately trying to find a reaction. "WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING?" The darkness pressed down on her from all sides, pushing against her eyeballs. Sweat trickled down her tunic, as tears of anger coursed down her face. 

The elf chuckled again, the grating noise sounding like fingernails on a chalkboard, rubbing against her traumatized brain. "And why would I tell you?" He asked. 

Sophie sighed in defeat, her shoulders sagging in frustration. Closing her puffy eyes, she rubbed her wet face against the shoulder of her tunic, her hands shaky and trembling. She was the Moonlark. She was hope. She was a bigger future. She was a light to others... But all in all, she was nothing. No matter how many times the Black Swan would tell her that she was special and created for a unique purpose- it wouldn't stop the odds rising up against her. Her feeble attempts at fighting back at this very moment. She was a poor excuse for some hero, some Moonlark something that was meant to fulfill the plans that they had for her. How many more times would she have to be rescued?

It was no use, she was the one being rescued this time- not her going to help other people. How many countless times had she had to be rescued from her friends, just barely escaping a brush with Death itself. And now, the only thing she could do was wait and wait and wait for rescue, and hope that this net of lies and betrayals she was tangled within would eventually let her out.
