Chapter 7
[WARNING: This story is being completely revamped, so this chapter will make absolutely zero sense and will look hideous. You have been warned- read at your own risk.]
"But first, we need to kill Insanity." I said
"No more killing. No more fighting. Forget her, and stay with me." Hurricane said, looking at me.
"I can never forget her! She murdered my parents! There is no justice in that whatsoever!" I stood up.
"Stop!" He tried to grab me, but missed. "Don't do this!"
"I have to. It's the only way I can forget her." I said, refusing to return his gaze. "I enchant this orchid to direct me to the icewing Insanity."
The white bloom swiveled in my palm, pointing towards the healer's hut. I followed it, leaving Hurricane behind.
"Wait!" He called, trying to catch up. But he didn't grow up in the rainforest, so he kept on whacking tree branches and getting mouthfuls of moths.
I landed on the roof of the hut. "Hello, again." I said coldly.
"I have been expecting you." The icewing said. "Ready to duel, DreamCatcher?"
"Very." I glared at her.
She hissed frostbreath at me, and I returned it with fire. She sliced her claws at the air, missing me by a scale. I ran at her, landing on top of her back and pinning her to the ground.
"Time to die." I hissed.
She laughed. "Go ahead! Just try."
I wrapped my claws around her neck. "Oh, I will. And I will succeed."
I wrung her neck, killing her instantly.
"But DreamCatcher..." Hurricane said from behind me.
"What?" I snarled. "She deserved it."
"This isn't the way you're supposed to do things! Send her to prison, or tell the icwing queen about what she did."
"So you're my ethics teacher now?"
"No, I'm just saying, you shouldn't kill dragons for your own personal vengeance! Only kill when necessary."
"Blah blah blah. Nobody remembers her in the ice kingdom. Plus, she was evil. She deserved it."
"We'll talk about this some other time."
I rolled my eyes. "She's gone. There's nothing more to worry about. It's not like I'm going to go on a DarkStalker killing spree and try to murder all the icewings."
"Oh. Wait. You should probably go talk to Moon about this whole thing."
"Maybe." I looked at the ground.
"It'll be fine. What's the worst that could happen?"
"Still don't like this!" I called behind me as we walked to the night village.
"I told you already, you'll be fine!" He called back. "Ow! Why are these branches so sharp?"
I laughed. "You're pathetic."
"I am not! I live in an ocean where there are no trees and no forests."
"Still pathetic!"
"Who are you, and what do you want?" A nightwing growled.
"I am DreamCatcher, queen Glory's adopted daughter." I said.
Should I mention I'm the new queen? I thought.
"Adopted?"
"Yes, I only found out recently."
When she died.
"Very well. You may enter."
"Also, do you know where I can find MoonWatcher?"
"Sure, she's with that sandwing by the river." He pointed up ahead. "Straight ahead, you can't miss it."
"Thank you." I walked briskly.
Sure enough, I found them. "Hello? MoonWatcher?"
She turned. "Yes? Who are you?"
I tried to block my mind. I wanted to tell her myself. "Your daughter."
"Moon, what happened?" Qibli asked, turning his head to look at her.
Moon's eyes went wide. "What?" She looked confused for a moment, then it hit her. "Oh, no. No, no, no, no."
"Moon?" Qibli looked concerned.
"She really is my daughter. But she's also DarkStalker's. Something happened, I don't know what, but I ended up with his egg. He checked with his magic."
"You sure you don't know what happened?" He looked skeptical.
"YES Qibli! He was UNDERNEATH THE MOUNTAIN when I had her egg!"
"Fine. But then why didn't you keep her, or tell me about it?"
"Someone destroyed Glory's egg, and I couldn't take care of a dragonet, so I gave her to Glory. Also, DreamCatcher, how is she?"
"She-" my voice cracked. "She's dead."
Moon crumpled to the forest floor. "What? But how does the rest of the double kingdom not know?"
"She and DeathBringer were just killed by an icewing."
Who I killed, then SOMEHOW she came back to life. THEN I had to kill her AGAIN.
You KILLLED them? Moon thought.
Oops. Forgot to block my mind. That was stupid.
"I didn't kill Glory! I killed the crazy evil dragoness!"
"You shouldn't have killed her. You should have-" I cut her off.
"EVERYBODY is ALWAYS say 'oh, you shouldn't have done that! Or 'killing is super bad!' I just saved at least FOUR OTHER DRAGONS!" I groaned.
"But that doesn't change the fact that you killed someone." Qibli said.
"Oh, like you've never killed anyone." I whipped my head around to stare at him.
"Actually, I haven't."
"Uh huh."
"It's true!"
"Stop arguing." Moon said, putting her arms in front of us like a barrier.
"But Moon, what did you do with my father?" I asked her.
"Well..." she looked nervous. "That's only for me, Qibli, Kinkajou, and Hope to know."
"So you're telling me," I said. "That you're not going to say anything about where my father is or what he did that was so bad?"
"I'll tell you what he did. Then, I'll see about telling you more."
"You better." I muttered. "Because I'm your queen."
"He put everyone who saw him except me under a spell that made them trust him. For some dragons, it was different. He made Winter worship him and think he could do no wrong. He planned to take the nightwing throne as king, but with no queen. After he brought most of the nightwing to the old kingdom, he attempted to murder all the icewings with a magical plague. We found out and gave the whole continent earrings to protect them from his spells..." Her voice faded into the background. I knew the rest.
"So that's what he did." She concluded.
"Now, tell me what you did to him."
"But you promise you won't try to get him?"
"I can't promise anything about the future."
"I don't know..."
"Just TELL ME!"
"Fine. We turned him into a dragonet."
"Which dragonet?"
"Qibli, should I tell her?" Moon asked.
"Probably. He is her father, after all."
"PeaceMaker."
"The bouncy hybrid that is obsessed with strawberries?"
"Yes. But don't try to free him, or we're doomed, ok?" Moon said.
I didn't answer.
"Now, we have work to do. See you around, DreamCatcher!" Qibli said.
We left. "Well." I said once we exited the gates. "Now I know where he is."
"Please, DreamCatcher, don't free him. He might kill you!"
"I'm not going to free him."
Yet.
"Good. How about we announce to the double kingdom that you're the new queen? The nightwings might like that. They want a nightwing queen." Hurricane suggested.
"Ok. I'll show you the way to my house."
We took off into the trees.
Ok, now, how do I get him out of the dragonet without everybody noticing? Obviously, I have to enchant something. Maybe I should make the dragonet stay, but have DarkStalker leave the body. But I have to make it so he's like he was before. This'll need a bit of time to think about.
"We're here, Hurricane!" I said.
He smashed into a tree as a response. "That tree" He panted. "Is beyond evil."
I smirked. "You think everything that you smash into is beyond evil."
"I do not! It's just that one tree. I swear I crashed into it the last time we went flying in the rainforest."
"You really hate that tree. Or you love it, because you remembered exactly what it looked like."
"This is where you live?" He asked, peeking inside.
"Yeah. I know it's not a palace, but I'll have to do."
"I'm glad it's not a palace. Living in one was annoying, I never knew where I was."
"Huh. But didn't you get all the alone time you could ever want?"
"I guess. But I'm not an introvert, so it felt really lonely sometimes."
"You, lonely? Doesn't sound possible, having your parents."
"They had other stuff to do. But anyways, what are we going to do now? It's too late to announce you being queen, because of the rainwings and their sleep schedule."
"I'm a bit tired. Let's sleep. I don't have an extra mattress, and the closest pond is a mile away.
"I'll be fine on the floor. I'm not that spoiled."
"Ok. Good night, Hurricane."
I crawled into the damp warmth of my moss bed.
Home, sweet home. Well, sort of. Except for I'm apparently DarkStalker's child and my old parents are now dead.
"Good morning, DreamCatcher." Hurricane said quietly.
"Urrrrggg... what time is it?"
"Eight on the dot."
"YOU LET ME SLEEP IN?" I lept out of the bed.
"You needed the sleep. Sorry." He looked slightly guilty.
"Help me gather everyone. We need to announce my new role."
"Sure, be back in a few hours. Wait, where should we meet up?"
"Here. I don't want to go to the council pavilion."
"Sure. See you in a bit." He left, crashing into another tree as he did so.
Ok, he's gone now. I can summon DarkStalker. Here goes nothing. I enchant PeaceMaker the hybrid to turn back into DarkStalker, my father, but have PeaceMaker's body still exist and have his future be intact. Have DarkStalker come instantly to me, and have all his memories be there from the moment Moon and the others overthrew him.
I heard a thud. "No! I will not be turned into a dragonet!"
"Calm down." I said. "You're not a dragonet anymore. You're with me now."
"Who are you?" He looked down at me. "I don't know you."
"You sure about that?"
"Wait... I think I do know you. What's your name?"
"Well, what name did you give me before Moon took me away?"
"Y- you're DreamCatcher? You're my daughter?"
"You named me DreamCatcher? I thought Glory and DeathBringer named me. Doesn't sound like a name you would like."
"Well it was Moon, but I liked it. What happened after I was... captured?"
"Another prophecy. Still working it out right now. I'm the new double kingdom queen, and both Glory and DeathBringer are dead."
"Whoah. Lots of stuff. Also, do you have any powers?"
"Yes. I'm an animus. Plus, I have both mind reading, and a very small prophetic power."
"Good. Am I allowed to rule the kingdoms until you're seven?"
"NO. Glory assumed the throne at my age, so why can't I?" I said. But then I heard wings. "Quick! Hide somewhere!"
"Where? I'm a gigantic nightwing, there's hardly anywhere to hide my entire body."
"Then enchant something! You are an animus, right?"
"Fine. I enchant this rock to hide me from all the dragons in the rainforest for one hour, then bring me back to normal as soon as that time is up."
He disappeared.
"You guys wait out here for a moment! I am going to get her!" Hurricane said.
He walked inside. "Come on out, DreamCatcher."
I did. I was greeted by hundreds of rainwings and nightwings, all staring up at me.
"The king and queen are dead! She has left the throne to me, her only heir to the throne." My voice rang.
There was a collective gasp, and a small blue-grey rainwing popped out of the crowd. "No!" She burst into tears.
"Kinkajou, Is that you?"
"Y- yeah."
"Come inside, I will talk to you separately."
"O- ok." She stammered.
"Hurricane, talk to them about what happened, but say that no more revenge is needed."
"Ok."
"So."
"Why did you challenge her?" She was now a flaming red. "She was a much better queen than you'll ever be! You're a nightwing, so that means you'll only be half as good."
"I didn't challenge her. An icewings who really, really hates me killed them. What's wrong with being a nightwing? Moon's a nightwing, so does that mean you don't like her as much as the rest of your friends?"
"You didn't challenge her?"
"No, I thought I just explained that."
"And no, it doesn't make Moon worse than my other friends. Because she didn't torture the rainwings."
"And I did, being less than an egg? I wasn't even hatched when that happened."
"Oh yeah. Right."
"Now that you understand, there is no need for revenge. The icewing is dead."
"How'd they die?"
"I killed her."
"Why d-"
"WHY ARE DRAGONS ALWAYS SAYING THAT? IT'S NOT THAT BAD! She was EVIL. She killed them for no good reason, so I had to get revenge."
"But you shouldn't-"
"ENOUGH. What's done is done. There's no turning back, and frankly, I don't see why you would want to."
"Fine. I give up."
"Good. Now you can go outside with the others."
She left, and Hurricane came in.
"That is a lot of angry dragons." He wiped his brow.
"What do they want?" I sighed.
"For you to talk, not a stupid pampered seawing prince."
"I'm assuming that's what the nightwings said. What did the rainwings say?"
"They just got really sad. They loved Glory, you know?"
"Yeah, I know. I'll go out and talk."
I stepped out into the chaos.
"Explain what happened!"
"WE WANT ANSWERS!" The crowd roared.
"Hurricane already said everything, but I will do it again. AND I'LL ONLY DO IT IF YOU SHUT UP!" I yelled.
They fell silent instantly, all eyes turned to me.
I told them everything that happened with Insantity, even Hurricane's proposal. (Minus the song).
"So you're saying" A nightwing said. "That we are supposed to accept a seawing as the king?"
"Yes."I said through gritted teeth.
"Great. Just what we need. More strange hybrids taking the throne." He growled.
I ignored him. "Any more stupid questions?"
Silence. "Good. My wedding will take place at this time and day next week."
I walked back into the house.
I let out a long breath. "If only they could all shut up."
"Eh, well, we all wish that at some point." Hurricane said.
"Yeah."
"So." He broke the awkward silence. "A week, huh?"
"I had to say something quick, I don't want to sound like a child in front of my subjects!"
"Ok, I get it, no need to yell."
"You two are crazy." Blizzard said from the back of the room. "Getting married after a week of knowing each other? Your lives are so easy. You both meet your literal soulmate at age four, you both get a throne at age four, and have animus magic. What could be better?"
"Shut up and deal with it." I said. "Why do you care so much? You 'sacrificed' if you can call it that, a piece of your soul to get me to my parents, which didn't even do anything in the end, except force my untrained buttocks apon a throne, with the majority of my new subjects hating my guts. So, no, no complaining about my life being SOOOO much better than yours."
He opened his mouth to say something, but a flaming red rainwing burst into the hut.
"I'LL HAVE YOUR HEAD FOR THIS!" She roared, looking like she could have snake rising out of her ears and nose. "WHY DID YOU KILL HER? DON'T YOU ARE SAY YOU DIDN'T, I SEE THROUGH YOUR LITTLE ACT!"
"Whoah, whoah, whoah. Calm down, Miss Super-Angry." Hurricane said, stepping between me and the flaming mad rainwing. "Sit down, and we can talk about this like sensible dragons, with no killing involved.
She growled at him. "I WANT JUSTICE NOW! SHE MURDERED MY QUEEN, AND SHE'S GOING TO PAY!"
"She did not kill queen Glory. We have explained this plenty of times." Hurricane said calmly.
"For all we know, you could be lying just so you could be king! The majority of us can't read minds, you realize that."
"Ok, we do see that. But the few of you who can read minds will be able to say that DreamCatcher didn't kill Glory."
"Hurricane, really, it's me who should be talking. Let me, please."
"But-" He protested
"Enough." I turned to the angry rainwing. "Listen, we can bring in MoonWatcher to prove it, or any mind reader. Tell us what you want us to do to prove it, and we'll do it."
"Oh, we'll need animus magic for that." She was looking right at me.
What do I do, what do I DO? HELP ME! I thought frantically.
Are you ok, DreamCatcher? I heard Hurricane's voice. What's wrong?
SHE'S LOOKING AT ME.
Wow. You really need help there.
BUT SHE ASKED FOR ANIMUS MAGIC AND SHE STARED RIGHT INTO MY SOUUUUULLLLL!
Are you sure about that? I think you're overreacting. We better stop talking like this, though, or it's going to look mighty suspicious.
FINE. BUT IF SHE FINDS OUT, IT'S YOUR FAULT.
"Did I miss anything?" I asked.
"Excuse me, but are you SERIOUS? Falling asleep RIGHT NOW?" The rainwing roared.
"It happens sometimes."
"Uh huh. Sure, I really believe that."
"You just have to accept it, whether you like it or not."
She growled.
"Please, whoever you are, let's put this all behind us and MOVE ON. My mother is dead, and I'm the queen now. DEAL WITH IT." I was really starting to hate all this 'you killed my queen!' stuff.
"Oh, so this is how you treat your subjects, hmm? I'd like to see you try and lock me in a dungeon."
"I never said anything about a dungeon. I'm just..." I didn't know what to say.
"Just what, exactly? Scared you'll get caught lying?"
"No." I grit my teeth. "You rainwings wouldn't understand. You never heard them tell you that you were never their real daughter, and you never watched them die before your very eyes. You don't have two whole tribes getting underneath your scales saying you killed their queen."
Her gaze softened. "So you really didn't kill her?"
"Of course I didn't! I've killed to protect her. I would never, ever, even in two thousand years kill her or dad, for that matter."
"Well then. I guess I'm sorry for accusing you of doing so. I'm Color, by the way."
Seriously, she believed you just like that? And I thought she was loyal to Glory.
Dad, just leave me alone while I deal with my kingdom.
If you say so...
"DreamCatcher, if you didn't know already. And I'll need your help with all the other dragons who think I killed her. They're more likely to listen to you than to me." I said.
"All right."
We continued telling everybody the same story over and over again until it was long past midnight.
"Ok, all of us need some sleep." Blizzard said, steering me to my bed.
"But..." I said, yawning widely. "My subjects..."
"You can talk to them tomorrow. Right now, you need rest."
"Need... to go... back..." I murmured, but I just zonked out on the soft moss of the bed.
"I love you, DreamCatcher." I heard Hurricane whispered before curling up near me.
