The Dream
I woke up, screaming into the night. I looked around, searching for any sign of Death or Drake. Slowly, I came to the realization that I was in a hospital. Needles prodded my body, and I could hear the beeping of my heart rate, reassuring me that I was indeed not dead.
My mom jumped up from her spot by my bedside and rushed to me.
"Are you okay?" she asked quickly.
I nodded, and swallowed. "H-H-How long was I asleep?"
She immediately began speaking fast. "Well, it all started the day that you were part of a car accident when You were only a year old. You survived, but you suffered from hallucinations occurring from time to time. One day a coupled of weeks back , you told me that you had seen these shadowy figures that no one else could see. That was when I knew the hallucinations had taken a turn for the worse."
"When you took my old Ford truck, I realized that something was wrong, so I took the Toyota SUV and followed you. I couldn't help you when I saw you run through a red light and watched you crash into another car attempting to make a U-turn. Your body flew out of the car and hit a nearby tree. It turns out that you both were speeding above the speed limit of 50."
"Immediately, I dialed 911, and the ambulance came. Once we reached the hospital, I was informed that you had fallen into a coma because of the impact from the car crash. For one week, I barely ate and slept. I--"
"Mom--" I whispered, prepared to tell her of my adventures.
She looked up at me with wide eyes, and I knew that I couldn't frighten her anymore, at least for today.
I smiled, and patted her shoulder. "I have a lot of assignments to make up, don't I?"
She chuckled. "You do, but don't worry about that yet. The doctor says you need to stay in the hospital for a couple more days so that they can monitor you while you recover."
She looked at the clock that hung above the white door. "Well, I have to go. I already told my boss that I would do this shift. I'm so sorry, honey." She reached down and hugged me hard.
She turned around, and walked out the door, her heels clicking down the hallway. I mentally slapped myself as I realized that I had forgotten to see how she was. The memory of her was fuzzy and hazy.
Ultimately, I decided to rest. I could already feel myself slipping off when I heard a strange voice whisper, "You're next."
I sat up, searching the room for any signs of an intruder. The voice had almost sounded like...Death himself.
I shook my head, reminding myself that that was all a dream. But a small part of me still believed that I had gone through all of that.
The next few days were a blur. All I remembered was the doctor coming into my room, informing me that I could leave. The next minute, I was in my mom's Toyota and we were driving away from the hospital.
I looked out the window, and almost froze in my tracks when I saw a figure standing in the park.
I shouted, "Wait!" My mom slammed on the brakes, causing a horrible screeching sound to occur.
"What?! What?!" she yelled, looking around for the source of my command.
I grinned back sheepishly. "Can we go to the park?"
She sighed deeply, and put on the best fake smile she could. "Sure, honey."
Once we had parked, I ran off, trying to find the figure I had seen.
Finally, I found him. I held my breath while I observed him. It couldn't be.
I slowly walked up to him, and he turned around and gave me a heart warming smile. It was.
"Ebony!" I yelled in delight. His smile disappeared and was replaced by a frown.
"Harley?" he questioned. I nodded, and he looked around.
He leaned closer, and whispered, "Did you have that dream? The one with Death and the clues and the secrets?"
"Yeah, why?"
"I was told that I was in a coma when I woke up, what about you?"
"I was too!" I whisper-yelled.
He looked around, making sure that no one was listening. "I think this is a trap. Death probably made this world for his amusement."
I nodded. "So what do we do?"
He smiled. "We fight back."
