Chapter Three

The sun is high in the sky with no clouds blocking its heated waves. It's May and it already feels like summer. Only one more month and than I'm free from the judgmental stares and the gossip teams.

I'm sitting on the top steps near the front doors, facing the unorganized parking. This was the spot that Trent and I agreed on as our meeting place for today. My fingers are still fidgeting in anticipation. I still can't wrap my brain around the amazing idea of someone else being like me. He can see my world.

As I gaze over at the football fields next to the parking lot, I see four creatures swinging on the field goal posts. These creatures are much bigger than my blue scaly friend who is playing with my shoelaces at the moment. Three of the creatures are covered in brightly colored fur from head to toe. The colors are bright under the sun and they look like massive rainbows swinging on the posts. The fourth creature has only fur around its wrists and ankles, the rest of it's body looking like a smooth pink color. All four of them have three horns standing on their heads. I can almost hear their hoots and laughs from here.

A tug on my jeans diverts my attention back to my little friend. He gives me a toothy grin and sticks his tongue at me playfully. I stick my tongue out in response. He claps his hands out to me. I sigh with a smile growing on my lips, knowing what he wants. I lean over and pick him up and place him on  my lap, glancing around to make sure no one is seeing me pick up something they can't see. He wraps his hands around one of my blonde braids and tugs gently, a giggle coming out of his mouth softly.

"What's it's name?" a voice questions by my ear. I gasp and twist my head around to find Trent leaning over me, looking over my shoulder at the creature in my lap who squealed when I jumped. His face is close and his smile is blinding.

I let out a breath and tilt my head back. "You scared me," I scold him, playfully glaring at him. Trent chuckles and sits beside me, setting his backpack next to him on the steps.

"So," he says, "you didn't answer my question."

"Oh," I exclaim, remembering, "he doesn't have a name." Trent raises his eyebrows. "I don't give them names, but I guess I should name this guy. He has been with me for about two years now. He is super clingy." At that exact moment, the little guy untwists the hair tie from my braid and starts chewing on it, keeping one hand on my hair still.

Trent's smile widens at that. "I can tell. You should definitely name him though." He scratches the back of his neck instead of his usual habit of scratching his wrist. "If he's been around all this time and is so clingy as you said, a name might seal the knot for you guys."

"Sure," I chuckle at his reasoning. I stare at the little blue creature in thought. He stares off at the parking lot, still chewing on my hair tie. I remember finding him crying on my front lawn. He must have been a few weeks old at the time. When he saw kids walk by on the sidewalk and not notice him his eyes would fill up more with tears. I saw him though and that made him slowly stop crying and hold my hand as I brought him to my chest. He has always been near me since.

"How about Draco, like the dragon constellation?" Trent suggests. I shake my head. Even though he looks like a dragon, I don't think he has either of the qualities of being really big or being fearsome.

Trent hesitates before opening his mouth, wearing a mischievous expression. "How about Link?" I stare at him incredulously. "You know, the link for the both of you. Why did I say it like that? It sounds like I want you to name him after a video-game character," he mutters the last part.

I shake my head again. "That is way to cheesy, sorry."

He shrugs. "I tried. It's your turn now. What is the first word that you think of when you see him?"

"Blue," I say with no hesitation.

"Well, I don't think you want to name him after Blue's Clues," he laughs. "What is a better word for blue?" His mind goes elsewhere in thought.

   "Cobalt?" I suggest.

"That could work," Trent says. He looks down at the hair tie chewing creature. "At least he looks the part."

"I like it," I say with a smile and a poke at the critter's belly, rewarding me with his giggles. The large round gold eyes with black slits for pupils like a cat stare at me in wonder. "Cobalt." His eyes fill with knowing and excitement. "Yeah, Cobalt. That's you."

He drops my hair tie from his mouth and holds it up in the air like a victory fist pump. I titter and so does Trent.

"When did you start seeing them?" he asks. His gaze locked on me now and not on Cobalt. I push my glasses up on my nose slightly with a my pointer finger. A small nervous habit.

"I started noticing them walk around in my front yard when I was five." I say. "What about you?"

"I was nine years old. They were jumping on my trampoline in my back yard. I saw them through the my bedroom window." His eyes shifting, recalling the memory. "It was two of them. I thought they were dogs at first but they had weird looking tails that were black and had a fluffy arrow-shaped pink end. They didn't bark either, they just... hooted." I nod in understanding.

Cobalt tugs on my loosening braid again, harder this time. I look down at him and he stares and points to the parking lot. I sigh.

"It seems that someone wants to go home," Trent says, watching our encounter.

I nod. "I just live across the street from the parking lot." I look down at the concrete stairs and push my glasses up my nose again. "You can come over if you want to."

I wait for his answer. He doesn't say anything for a couple seconds but it feels like an hour.

"Sure, if it's okay of course," his grin is there on his face again. An amazing and friendly smile. I nod and return his smile.

We swing our backpacks onto our backs and I hold Cobalt close to my chest. Once I have adjusted my straps, Cobalt climbs up onto my shoulder and sits himself down, letting go of my disheveled braid and now gripping the hood of my sweatshirt.

I lead the way down the steps and around the parking lot. I haven't had someone my age come over to "hang out" since middle school. Near seventh grade it starts get very odd and weird that someone still has "imaginary" friends. Sure I talk to people still but I don't stay after school to meet with them. The exact thing I am doing with Trent. I bite my lip to prevent the smile that is forcing itself on to my lips.

We walk to the gate opening of the parking lot to the main road and wait for the on going traffic to pass by. Once it's clear, we cross the street and head for my driveway.

"You were not kidding when you said that you lived across the street," Trent laughs. He studies my house and nods slightly. My house is a one story one with yellow walls and white trim and shutters. There is a front porch in the same white wood and the front door is a dark brown with windows on either side. "Looks cozy," he compliments. I thank him.

The driveway isn't a long one so we are at my door in no time. I fumble with my keys as I try to unlock the front door. Never have been amazing at unlocking doors. After a few tries I finally get the door to open.

"After you," he says and follows me into the front room.
