They entered Xiao Hei's makeshift bedroom, and in there,Wei Wuxian started to see everyone in a different light.
There was Wen Qing, Jingyi, one man in all black with a dangerous aura, one man in all white with no less dangerous aura, and there were the two kids and last but not least, Lan Wangji.
How many of them were the mythical beasts aside from the kids and Lan Wangji?
If his hunch was correct, the only human in the room was himself, and probably Wen Qing, but he wasn't so sure anymore, and he had thoughts about that. But Lan Wangji seemed to sense his hesitation, so he took Wei Wuxian's elbow and guided him to the bed, where Xiao Hei was already up and looked at him with his beautiful, innocent eyes.
"Papa…" he hugged Lan Wangji and Lan Wangji gave the boy his softest smile and kissed his hair. It was obvious that Lan Wangji loves this boy very much.
Then the boy shifted his glance at Wei Wuxian and his eyes lightened up immediately.
"Gege! You're here too…"
Wei Wuxian's heart melted. He didn't understand why this boy seemed to make him emotional every time they met.
"Hello there, Xiao Hei. Are you okay?"
"Thanks to you, gege, you saved me twice now." Xiao Hei tugged at Wei Wuxian's sleeve.
"Twice?" Now it's Wei Wuxian's turn to be confused.
Xiao Hei suddenly panicked and he looked at Lan Wangji, who nodded imperceptibly. That gave him relief and he let out a big breath.
"En." Xiao Hei then pulled his pants up to show Wei Wuxian his ankle, which was bandaged.
"Uhm, I don't really remember… wait, you're that crow?"
"Crow?" Lan Wangji raised his brow. "Was that when you sneaked out for the first time?"
"And the second too, when you gave me the red stone? That was you, right?"
"Red stone?" Lan Wangji was so surprised upon hearing that. "You mean the Phoenix Blood amulet?"
Xiao Hei nodded shyly, then he turned to Lan Wangji.
"Are you mad, papa? I-I just feel like this gege is so nice, and smells so good, and he helped me… and…"
"Xiao Hei, the amulet is yours. You can give it to anyone you like, papa won't be mad." Lan Wangji patted his head and Xiao Hei grinned happily.
"En." Xiao Hei looked so happy and Xiao Bai hugged him from behind.
"Xiao Hei, next time you're not allowed to go alone without me or Xue Yang. You know you're super weak and won't be able to defend yourself if Xian-gege wasn't there. Right, Xian-gege?" Xiao Bai gave him a wink. She was back to her five years old form, the girl with silver hair who Wei Wuxian met back in Monaco.
Wei Wuxian never felt so overwhelmed in his life, he was speechless.
"Boss, I need to show you something." The man in black who was holding a tab, gestured to Lan Wangji who nodded.
"Go on, I'll keep the kids company." Wei Wuxian shifted closer to Xiao Hei's side, he couldn't keep his eyes off him. The boy looked just like when he was at that age and it really boggled his mind.
As soon as Lan Wangji moved away to the office adjoined the bedroom with the man in black and white, Xiao Hei shifted closer to Wei Wuxian and put his head on his lap while Xiao Bai watched him closely.
"You… are you feeling okay, Xian-gege?" She asked him while tilting her head.
"Mm? I'm okay, why?" Wei Wuxian gave her a smile. "Are you concerned about me?"
"Ha ha, that's funny, you're technically an enemy, so why should I care about you?" She blushed and pouted. "I mean, after you… touched the amulet Xiao Hei gave you… did you feel something different? Nausea? Dizzy? Unable to focus?"
"What? No, I feel fine."
"Hmm…" Xiao Bai looked at Wei Wuxian in curiosity, then she suddenly snatched Wei Wuxian's hand and felt his pulse. "Strange, you really are fine."
"Yuanyuan, you should call the room service and order food for all of us." Wen Qing suddenly came over and sat in front of Wei Wuxian. "Wei Wuxian. How long has it been?"
Wei Wuxian shifted his gaze to her, and his eyes went soft. They were childhood sweethearts after all, and also competitors for the shadow guard captain's position. Until one day when Wen Qing suddenly disappeared and Wen Ning told him that she went abroad and cut all contacts to him and everyone in her life, including the shadow guards.
"Qing. Long enough, I guess. How are you?" Wei Wuxian was curious as of why she just left back then, but he didn't rush.
"I'm… mostly fine." She looked somber while she tucked a stray hair off Xiao Hei's temple. Xiao Hei watched their interaction with his alert eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about the reason for my leaving back then."
"I know you must have your own reason."
"Yeah, I did." She stood up and looked closely at Wei Wuxian.
"Wei Wuxian, seeing as we were close friends before, I would like to give you friendly advice." She gathered her stuff and gestured to Jingyi, who watched them silently. "Do not trust anyone in shadow guards and the Wens. Especially the Wens."
"Including Wen Ning?"
"Especially him. I know it's hard to believe since he is my brother and all, but… anyway, you have to watch your six all the time, don't ever, ever low your guard." She ruffled Xiao Hei's hair fondly.
"So, are you a mythical beast too?"
Wen Qing looked so surprised when Wei Wuxian asked her that. Then she smiled.
"Lan Wangji already trusts you that much, huh?" She smirked. "Anyway, that's classified… maybe Lan Wangji will tell you later." There was a mischievous glint in her eyes, the one Wei Wuxian remembered from back then.
"Right. Asking him for information is like trying to squeeze blood from rock. I'll be so satisfied if I can crack that hard shell of him."
"Ah, no need to be frustrated. I've known him since kids and I still couldn't put any dent on that stony face, let alone a crack."
"What? You knew him since kids? How? Why don't I know? Did you withhold information from me? Your oldest and bestest friend?"
"That's…"
"Complicated." Lan Wangji was back in the room with an unreadable expression of his. But strangely Wei Wuxian could feel that he was kind of angry, and frustrated.
"Qing, Jingyi, take care of the kids' schedule, block them for the next week, no performance. Xue Yang, you watch them. Xingchen, I need you to set up arrays around the houses and notify Mingjue. And you," he pointed at Wei Wuxian, "come with me."
After Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian left them, Xue Yang whispered to Jingyi in his most secretive tone.
"You think they went out to… do the deed?" He scratched his chin.
Jingyi blushed.
"You… beast! How could you think about uncle like that! He's too pure to taint himself with that… that human!"
"Well Jingyi, for one, I am a beast, and so are you. Secondly, why do you think that your uncle is still pure?" Xue Yang scoffed. "You must've noticed it too, their scents mingled together."
"Shut up Xue Yang, I don't want to hear it." Jingyi pouted.
Xue Yang laughed out loud.
"You really have to grow up kid, and be happy that your uncle has finally ended his monkhood. His thing will shrivel to dust if he goes another millenium without ever doing the deed, like I said."
"Shut up."
