Someone new

Doug was sitting on the roof of a building and watching the clouds pass by. Feathery whisps of white littered an endless blue color. Sometimes he wished he could be like them. Like the clouds that hovered hundreds of feet above him. He wanted to know what it was like to be free. He closed his eyes, feeling the gentle afternoon breeze, and smiled in content.

The sounds around Ergastulum was always clearer from above. Doug could make out the chatters of people, the laughter of playing children, the screeching tires of a passing vehicle. He just sat there quietly and listened to the city's music. That was until an unfamiliar voice called him out of his trance.

Doug looked towards where he had heard the voice, down in the dim alleys where Twilights like him would be able to roam freely. From there he spotted a young girl with a basket full of sandwiches. She was small and fairly thin, wearing a simple dress that was white and clean. Her head was covered by a white floppy sun hat with a black ribbon tied around it, making it hard for him to get a glimpse of her face.

He noticed that the girl was giving away her sandwiches to the children searching for their meals from the trash. In contrast to her neatness, their hairs were dirty and unkempt, and the clothes they wore were either tattered or too big for them to fit in. Doug silently watched as the children warily accepted the food.

A low rumble sounded and he flinched. He looked at his own stomach, having just remembered that he hadn't eaten anything since breakfast.

"I have an extra sandwich for you!"

"Huh?" Doug looked back at the girl and saw that she was alone now in the alleyways.

He glanced over his shoulder to look behind him. There was no one.

"Don't you want it?" She asked, waving the basket above her head.

He looked back down at where she stood. "Wait... You talking to me?" He pointed at himself in disbelief. It was a little weird that she was being so friendly. Hardly anyone is in Ergastulum.

"Yeah, I have one more here!" She said as she took out the last sandwich and held it out. "You can have it!"

Doug was a bit skeptical about accepting this stranger's offer, but hey. It was free food.

He jumped down the roof and landed in front of her. The girl yelped in surprise, clearly not expecting him to come down straight away. And from that height either.

Doug stared at the sandwich in her hand with an impassive expression, not sure why she would be giving out free food in a place like this. His eyes trailed up from her hand to her arm, her shoulder, then her face. The girl had short, wavy, dark brown hair and brown eyes. From the looks of it, she was Asian.

"Is... Is something wrong?" She asked worriedly. "Do you hate bread or something?"

He shook his head and shrugged, taking the sandwich from her and biting into it. She sighed in relief.

"What are you doing here anyway?" He asked her. "This isn't exactly a place where people like you should be hanging around."

"Yes, I know. My grandmother is going to scold me when she finds out that I wandered off." She sighed again, sounding more regretful this time. "But... I felt really bad when I saw them looking through the trash. I know it isn't much but I hope they liked the sandwiches."

Doug watched as a smile graced her lips after saying that. He smirked. How come he's never seen her before? Was she new to the city? His eyes scanned for a tag somewhere on her but found none, which meant that she was a Normal. A really naive but nice Normal.

"You're kinda weird," He teased.

"Wha-?! How rude!" She pouted.

Just as he was about to say something else, another voice was calling desperately, and she turned around to answer. That was obviously his cue to leave. He jumped from wall to wall and landed back on his spot on the roof, making sure his legs didn't dangle off the edge this time.

"There you are, lady Cloie! Please don't just disappear like that again!"

"Ah, I'm sorry. I was just talking to--"

"Talking to...? There is no one here."

"Oh. Nevermind then..."

Doug finished the last bit of the sandwich as he listened to their footsteps leaving the area. When it became quiet again, he looked over the edge and smiled thoughtfully.

"Cloie, huh..."
