✨Chapter 30✨
"I need my son to pull through this," he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. The words were barely audible, a desperate plea to the universe, a silent prayer escaping his lips. He couldn't envision a world without his son's light shining in it. "I can't imagine living my life without him in it," he continued, his voice laced with a raw vulnerability. New tears began streaming down his face, hot and unchecked, tracing paths down his stubbled cheeks. They were tears of fear, of love, of the unbearable thought of loss.
A heavy silence hung in the air, thick with unspoken anxieties. Avery watched Jax, his normally vibrant energy extinguished, replaced by a raw, exposed vulnerability. His face, usually etched with a charming grin, was now taut with worry, his eyes reflecting the turbulent storm within. Every flinch, every suppressed sigh, spoke volumes about the internal battle he was waging against the unknown. The weight of uncertainty concerning his son's health pressed down on him, a tangible burden that stole the color from his cheeks and the light from his eyes. Avery's heart ached, a profound, empathetic pain that resonated deep in her core. It shattered into a million pieces, each shard a testament to her deep affection and concern for Jax.
Although fate had denied her the opportunity to hold the precious, vulnerable baby close, a bond as profound and mysterious as any maternal embrace had already formed between them. Little Abel, a testament to resilience, a miniature warrior battling daunting odds in the neonatal intensive care unit, had, in the most unexpected and poignant way, laid claim to a special place within the deepest chambers of her heart.
Witnessing Jax's distress made the reality of the situation starker, more immediate, more agonizing. It was no longer an abstract worry; it was a tangible, painful reality etched on the lines of Jax's face, heard in the tremor of his voice. The vulnerability he displayed, the raw, unfiltered emotion, made the baby's plight devastatingly real and undeniably worse. Each passing moment seemed to stretch into an eternity, each silence pregnant with unspoken fears and hopes. Avery could only stand there, a silent witness to his pain, her own heart heavy with a shared grief and an unwavering hope for the tiny life hanging in the balance.
"The doctors are doing all they can for him. You just gotta have faith that things will be okay." Said Avery, tears streaming down her face.
"I know. It just kills me that there is nothing I can do to help. I hate this feeling of being incapable of helping fix this." Said Jax.
"I know, baby. I know." Said Avery.
A profound silence settled between them, thick and heavy like a velvet curtain, as they occupied the worn bench outside of the hospital. Each lost in their own thoughts, they pondered the vast, uncharted territory of their shared future, a future that shimmered with both promise and uncertainty. The air vibrated with the unspoken questions and tentative hopes that hung between them. Suddenly, the piercing, insistent ring of Jax's cell phone shattered the quiet reverie, jolting them both out of their introspective moods. The unexpected sound, so discordant against the tranquil backdrop of the park, made them jump, hearts racing as if startled from a deep sleep.
Instead of letting Avery climb out of his lap, he shifted so he could get to his phone in his pocket. Dragging it out, he answered.
"Hello? Okay, We're on the way." Said Jax before ending the call.
"Was that John?" Asked Avery.
"Yeah. The doctors on the way up to tell us about Abel." Said Jax.
"Come on then. Let's go see what he has to say." Said Avery as she stood from his lap and reached for his hand.

A wave of relief washed over the gathered family members as Dr. Hayman, his scrubs still slightly damp and a weary but reassuring smile on his face, stepped into the waiting room. The tense silence that had filled the air for hours was finally broken. "Good news, everyone," he began, his voice calm and steady. "Abel has made it through surgery." A collective sigh escaped the group, their shoulders visibly relaxing. "Though he's not completely out of the woods yet," Dr. Hayman cautioned, holding up a hand slightly. "We're going to need to monitor him closely over the next day or so. Post-operative recovery is a delicate process, and we need to make absolutely sure there aren't any complications. We'll be watching for any signs of infection or internal bleeding very carefully." He paused, his gaze sweeping over each face, offering a quiet reassurance. "But," he continued, a touch of optimism entering his voice, "it seems right now, based on everything we've seen, that he will make a full recovery. He's a strong little boy."
"Wonderful!" Avery exclaimed, tears running down her face as she embraced Jax tightly.
"Absolutely." Gemma responded, tears flowing freely.
"I told you, son, didn't I? Things always turn out as they should." John remarked, giving Jax a pat on the back.
"Thanks, Doc," Jax exclaimed, a wide grin spreading across his face. He carefully lifted Avery into his arms, her small frame feeling surprisingly light. With a joyful whoop, he began spinning her around the room, her delighted giggles filling the air. The heavy weight of Abel's uncertain fate, which had been pressing down on him for so long, suddenly felt lighter, as if a tremendous burden had been lifted from his shoulders. The tension that had knotted his muscles and clouded his thoughts had finally begun to dissipate, replaced by a sense of relief so profound it made his head spin almost as much as the motion of their dance.
"No problem. I'll let you know if there are any updates. I recommend that you all head home, get some sleep, and return in the morning. Exhaustion won't help him." The doctor stated.
"Understood." Said Jax as he looked down at Avery.
"Let's go home baby." She said quietly.

"You sure your mom and dad aren't going to mind me staying the night?" Asked Jax.
"No, not at all. Mom knows we're together. And she doesn't live under a rock. She knows what we've been doing when I've spent the night with you." Said Avery.
"I guess that's true." Said Jax.
"Are you okay?" Asked Avery when Jax sat down on the edge of her bed to remove his shoes.
"I'm getting there. I was so fucking scared, Vee. I don't remember ever being that scared in my life." Said Jax.
"I know, baby," Avery whispered, her voice thick with emotion, as she gently scooted over on the plush, floral-patterned bed. The soft cotton sheets rustled beneath her as she moved closer, reaching out to wrap her arms securely around his broad back. She could feel the tension radiating from him, the same knot of anxiety that had been twisting in her own stomach for hours. "I was scared too," she admitted, her breath warm against his skin. The fear had been a cold, sharp thing, slicing through the usual warmth of her love, and she knew he felt it too. It was a shared burden, this overwhelming protectiveness of their son. "I love that little boy with my whole heart," she continued, her voice trembling slightly. Each word was a testament to the fierce, unwavering bond she felt, a connection that transcended anything else in her life. "I would kill me," she declared, the raw intensity of her statement echoing in the quiet room, "if something happened to him." The thought, even just the mere possibility, was a horrifying abyss she didn't dare look into for too long.
"Sounds like we're on the same page," Jax affirmed, a hint of weariness in his voice, yet a spark of resolve flickered in his eyes. The long day had taken its toll, but the matter at hand was too crucial to ignore.
Avery watched Jax intently, a deep concern etched on her face. She reached out, gently taking his hand. "Let's go to bed," she suggested softly. "We'll go see him first thing in the morning. There's no point in rushing now. Right now, you need rest. You're exhausted, and thinking clearly is more important than anything else." Her words were a gentle mix of command and care.
Jax sighed, the tension seeming to drain out of him in that moment. He knew Avery was right. Pushing himself further would only lead to mistakes. "Okay," he conceded, a small smile touching his lips. "Okay, you're right. Rest sounds good." He leaned into her touch, feeling a wave of gratitude for her unwavering support and pragmatic approach. The weight of the situation still pressed heavily, but for now, he could set it aside and allow himself a moment of reprieve.Avery watched as Jax stood from the bed and made quick work of removing his kutte, shirt, and jeans before climbing out of bed and slipping on the night gown she'd had on prior to his phone call.
With a soft click, Avery extinguished the warm glow of the bedside lamp, plunging the room into a comfortable darkness punctuated only by the faint moonlight filtering through the curtains. She nestled into the bed, the cool sheets a welcome contrast against her skin, and reached for Jax. Her arms wrapped around him, her fingers lightly tracing the contours of his back, and she felt the immediate shift in his posture. All the tension that had been coiled within him seemed to unravel as he relaxed fully against her, a sigh escaping his lips as he melted into her embrace. The shared silence was comfortable, filled with a sense of peace and belonging, a testament to the quiet intimacy they had cultivated together. The gentle rhythm of their breathing filled the space, each exhale a silent acknowledgment of the comfort they found in each other's presence. It was a moment of quiet connection, a simple yet profound expression of their shared life and love.
"I love you baby." Whispered Avery.
"I love you too." Said Jax.

Avery stirred from her slumber, a comfortable warmth enveloping her. It took a moment for her groggy mind to register the sensation, the feeling of being held close. She opened her eyes to find herself nestled against Jax, his arm draped securely around her waist. His proximity sent a pleasant shiver down her spine. A wave of contentment washed over her as she realized they had spent the night intertwined. She hadn't expected such closeness, but now that it was here, she found herself unwilling to break the spell.
Jax must have already been awake, for when she attempted to subtly shift her position, just wanting to turn and properly face him, he spoke, his voice still thick with sleep. "Good morning," he murmured, the sound a low rumble against her ear.
Her heart skipped a beat at the sound of his voice so close. She responded with a soft, "Good morning," her own voice slightly raspy from sleep. She gently craned her neck to catch his eye. "Been awake long?" she asked, genuinely curious how long he'd been watching her. She hoped she hadn't been snoring.
"Not too long. I was just watching you sleep." Said Jax.
"That's kinda stalkerish," said Avery, stretching.
"Maybe so. But you looked so beautiful I couldn't help myself." Said Jax before leaning over and placing a gentle kiss on her lips.
"If you say so. Are you hungry?" Asked Avery.
"I'm hungry for you but that's not what you meant is it?" Said Jax.
"No, not at all." Said Avery laughing. "I'm sure mom's whipping up something delicious. What do you say we head down and see what she has?" Asked Avery.
"Sounds good to me. Although I gotta admit, I'm not looking forward to them wondering why I spent the night here." Said Jax.
"If they ask, I'll explain. It's all going to be okay. I promise." Said Avery before kissing him once climbing out of bed. "Let me put something else on and we'll both head down okay?" Asked Avery.
"Okay." Said Jax.
After rummaging through her things for a moment, she pulled out a denim skirt, its faded blue a comfortable and familiar sight. A bright coral crop top followed, a splash of color that seemed to inject a bit of optimism into any day when it was needed. Finally, after a brief hunt, she located her undergarments, a lace bralette and matching panties.
Gathering a small collection of garments, Avery carefully laid them out on the plush surface of the bed. With a swift, practiced motion, she pulled the silken nightgown over her head and efficiently began dressing. The soft fabric flowed against her skin, a comforting sensation as she prepared to face the day.
"Have I told you how much I love your body?" Jax remarked, his voice filled with admiration. He lounged casually on the bed, his gaze fixed on Avery as she moved about, a playful smile gracing his lips.
"All the time, baby," Avery replied, her eyes meeting his with a mischievous twinkle. A warm, confident wink accompanied her words, a silent acknowledgment of their shared affection and playful banter.
Once fully dressed, Avery and Jax made their way down the grand staircase, the polished wood gleaming under the soft light. They descended together, hand in hand, ready to face her parents, their steps steady and their demeanor composed.
