Chapter Thirteen
Marshall gasped in horror. The world spun around and his knees buckled. "I could have killed him," whimpered Marshall. "How could I be so careless?"
Everest noticed his actions and ran to his side. "Marshall!" she called out, causing the others to turn to him. "Marshall" She knelt down to his side. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
Marshall couldn't speak as tears filled his eyes. "I can't believe I was so thoughtless," whispered Marshall, still not looking up. "Chase will never forgive me, I could have taken Rocky from them." Everest pulled Marshall into a hug realizing what had happened. Chase had come over once he knew Rocky was okay. He, too, realized what had obviously happened.
Part of Chase was instantly furious, but pushing it aside as fear, he felt pity for Marshall. "I know you would never do something like that on purpose Marshall," said Chase as calmly as he could. "It's not like you to forget something like that, but we were all excited about the day and accidents happen. Thank goodness no one wasn't hurt."
Marshall looked up at Chase with tears in his eyes then immediately hung his head again, unable to face Chase. He feared that Skye would never speak with him again. Everest drew him closer and held him as he sobbed.
Chase returned to Skye who was trying her best to talk Rocky out of the driver's seat. Rocky was still gripping the steering wheel tightly and shaking. "It's really okay Rocky," Skye said in a soothing voice. "You're safe, you can let go."
Rocky looked at Skye and blinked. "Mom?" Rocky burst into tears and wrapped his arms around Skye. Skye helped him from the vehicle and held him.
Chase looked over to the tractor trailer. The fire department had been able to gain control of the fire and was mopping up the hot spots. A police officer was over taking the report information from the driver. He looked up and acknowledged Chase. "Officer Shepherd, you got one hell of a kid there. His reaction probably saved him."
Chase smiled. "You're right, he's quick and smart."
"I'm going to need to speak with the driver of the van," said the officer.
"I'll get him," said Chase turning to where Marshall and Everest were sitting on the ground. "Marshall?" Chase said as he approached. Marshall still couldn't bring himself to look Chase in the eye.
"Yes sir?"
"The officer needs to speak with you since you were the last one driving; I'll go with you. We'll get through this. Like I said, accidents happen." Marshall nodded as Everest helped him to his feet.
Marshall spoke with the officer and explained that he had stopped to get fuel and left the vehicle in neutral without setting the parking brake. The officer took the information and explained that Marshall would need to provide insurance information for the van since it was rented in his name.
Rubble and Zuma had checked the van and, other than some dirt from running into the ditch, the van was completely unharmed. "You think Marshall will be okay?" asked Rubble.
"He is really beating himself up about this," said Zuma. "It could have been any of us that could have done the same. Marshall is a stickler for safety and it may take a while for him to forgive himself."
"Do you think Skye and Chase are mad at him?"
"I think since Rocky is okay, they'll be fine. I'll offer to drive us back to the cabin." Zuma walked over toward Chase to speak with him. "Chase, Rubble and I are going to take the van back to the gas station and finish filling it up."
"Ok, See you two in a minute" said Chase turning back to the officer. When Chase finished, he walked back over to where Skye and Rocky were sitting and talking. Rocky had calmed down. Chase smiled as he thought of the fact that Skye had the same effect on him. Chase sat down next to the two. "You okay bud?"
"I'm okay" said Rocky. "I just... woke up and saw that the van was moving and no one was in the van. I just reacted. I'm sorry I caused the wreck."
"You didn't cause the wreck," said Skye. "You saved yourself and no one got hurt. The truck can be replaced."
"Your reaction not only saved yourself but you managed to not hit anything and get the van stopped. You did great," Chase explained. "Marshall is very upset that he put you in that situation."
"But it was an accident," said Rocky. "He didn't forget the brake on purpose."
"Do you feel like talking to him?" asked Chase. "I don't think he will forgive himself anytime soon, but it might help."
Rocky looked over to where Marshall and Everest were standing. "I'll talk to him." Chase and Skye followed Rocky as he made his way over to Marshall.
Marshall saw them approaching and considered running but instead looked down at the ground. "I'm so sorry," said Marshall as they walked up. "I know you'll never forgive me, I could have gotten you killed."
"Marshall, it was an accident," said Skye. "Any of us could have done the same."
"I don't blame you Marshall," said Rocky.
"I should have been more responsible, I know better than to leave a vehicle without checking the brakes." Chase, Skye and Rocky all group hugged Marshall
"It's okay, accidents happen and luckily no one was hurt and we can all learn a lesson from this," said Chase.
Zuma and Rubble had returned after fueling the van. Everyone got back in to head back to the cabin. "I hate to be a pain," said Rocky.
"What do you need little dude?" said Zuma looking back in the mirror.
"I really need to go to the bathroom," Rocky said, blushing a bit. That brought a laugh from everyone except Marshall who just stared out the window.
"We can take care of that," laughed Zuma, turning around and heading back to the gas station.

They arrived at the cabin and everyone began gathering everything to take inside. Rocky got out and walked towards the cabin. Marshall saw that everything had been carried in he looked around and saw Rocky walking toward the cabin and ran to open the door for him. "Thanks Marshall," Rocky said with a smile.
"You're welcome" Marshall said. "Do you need anything? I could get you a drink if you need it."
"No, I'm fine thanks." Marshall watched as Rocky walked into the living room and sat down. Marshall sat nearby and watched Rocky.
Everyone slowly moved to their bedrooms. It had been a long day and everyone was getting sleepy. Goodnights were said and everyone went to sleep. Everest had taken one of the empty bedrooms. Skye and Chase were asleep when Skye heard someone moving in the hallway. She walked to the door and peeked out. Skye watched as Marshall moved down the hall. 'Sneaking to Everest's room are we?' thought Skye. Marshall stopped in front of Rocky's door and slowly opened the door peeking in before walking inside. Skye slowly stepped into the hallway. She paused at the door noticing that Marshall had left it open. She looked in and found that Marshall was standing at the foot of the bed looking down at the sleeping 12 year old.
"I promise I will make this up to you," Marshall whispered ."I'll die before I ever let anything else happen to you." Skye turned and walked back to her room closing the door behind her as quietly as she could.

Skye laid down beside Chase who instantly rolled over to look at her. "Marshall and Everest?"
"No, Marshall was checking on Rocky. He's very upset about this."
"He should be, he was careless and could have taken Rocky from us," whispered Chase.
"You know he didn't do it on purpose." Skye pulled Chase's face toward her. She noticed the tears running down his face.
"I've been through some of the worst situations, but that was the most scared I can ever remember being," Chase whimpered. "I feared so much that he was gone. Once I realized what had happened, it was all I could do to not tear Marshall apart."
"But you didn't," said Skye. "You knew in your heart that is was an accident."
"I keep telling myself that," Chase replied. "But I'm so angry."
"You have to find a way to forgive him," Skye said. "Just like you have to find a way to forgive yourself. Good night honey, I love you."
"Good night Skye, I love you too."

The next morning, Skye was up and making breakfast. Marshall wandered into the kitchen and saw Skye at the stove. He turned to walk back out of the room when Skye saw him. "Coffee's ready Marshall, the cups are already set out," Skye said. "I've got biscuits cooking. Gravy will be ready shortly."
"Uh, thank you," Marshall said walking over and pouring a cup.
"Do you mind waking everyone?" asked Skye.
"No, I'll do it." Marshall went to wake the others but stopped at the door to look back at Skye. He shook his head and walked toward the bedrooms.
Marshall was knocking on all the doors, letting everyone know breakfast was ready when he came to Chase and Skye's door. As he went to knock, Chase opened the door. Marshall immediately looked at the floor. "Um, breakfast is ready," Marshall whispered and turned away. Chase started to say something but instead walked over to Rocky's door he knocked and then opened the door.
"You awake?" Chase asked, noticing that Rocky had pulled the pillow over his head. Chase smiled and sat on the edge of the bed. Rocky lifted the pillow and looked at Chase. "How you doing this morning bud?" asked Chase.
"Really dad," Rocky replied. "I'm fine. Yeah, it scared me, but I'm fine."
Chase frowned at first but then forced himself to smile. "Your mom's got breakfast ready. Smells like biscuits and gravy, you hungry?"
"I'm starved," said Rocky, jumping out of bed at which point Chase noticed he was wearing nothing but his underwear. Chase's eyes were immediately drawn to the scars on Rocky's back and a lump caught in his throat. Immediately the anger returned and Chase stood. "I'll see you at breakfast," Chase said as he left the room. Rocky watched as he left and shrugged.
Chase walked through the living room and straight out the door onto the deck overlooking the meadow below. Chase was shaking he was so mad. He began pacing back and forth along the railing, his fists clenched as he thought. Marshall had seen him walk out and followed at a distance. He stood at the door trying to gather the courage to confront Chase, though, he knew in his heart that Chase was mad at him.
Finally, he stepped out and as the door closed behind him Chase turned and glared at him. "Now's not a good time," Chase snapped.
"Look... I know you're angry with me, Chase" said Marshall. "I don't blame you." Chase stopped and just looked at Marshall. He wanted so bad to tear Marshall apart, his heart told him Marshall was regretful about it but there was something else, something he could identify. "Chase, we've been best friends for a long time," Marshall whispered. "I would never do anything to hurt someone, let alone Rocky or you and Skye for that matter. I know how you feel about death, I could have easily take Rocky from you. I don't expect you to forgive me. I promise I will make this up to all of you, somehow."
"You have no idea how I feel Marshall!" shouted Chase, causing Marshall to flinch. "You've seen people die, but you've never been the cause. Trust me, you don't know how I feel and you have no idea how close you came to knowing how that feels." Marshall started to reply but Chase continued. "You didn't have to look in her eyes as she fell to her death. You have no idea what death is until you caused it." Chase collapsed on the deck gasping. Marshall immediately ran to his friends side. Needless to say, everyone had heard the yelling and came to investigate.
Skye ran onto the deck. "Chase!"
Marshall held up his hand to everyone. "Chase, is that it? You think you caused her death? Chase, you did everything in your power to stop it. Yes, you watched her die but you didn't cause it." Chase looked up at Marshall with tears in his eyes, then he snapped and began hitting Marshall.
"You almost took him away!" screamed Chase. "What were you thinking?" Marshall had taken a few blows before Rubble stepped in, holding Chase back.
"Chase, stop!" cried Skye.
"Chase, I don't blame you for hating me," Marshall whimpered. "I know there is nothing I can do to make this up to you." Chase slowly stopped resisting until he could no longer hold himself up. He started sobbing and Rubble eased him down to the ground. Marshall grabbed Chase into a tight hug. "I'm so sorry," cried Marshall. "I never dreamed that I could have ever been so stupid."
Rocky had watched the argument with his own eyes. He could feel the tension settle. He and Skye both stood in front of Chase and Marshall. "Skye, I hope someday you can forgive me," Marshall continued. He looked down at Rocky. "Rocky, I am so sorry I put you in harm's way. I'll never forgive myself."
Chase grabbed Marshall tightly. "I know you didn't do it on purpose," cried Chase. "But it scared me so badly. I thought I had lost Rocky, that I had lost another one, and there was nothing I could do but watch."
"Marshall," Rocky said, speaking up for the first time. "I don't blame you." said Rocky. "Dad, I love you more than anything. I just did what I thought you would do."
Chase laughed. "Rocky, you did great. If you hadn't reacted the way you did, you would probably be dead. Marshall, I'm sorry I hit you. I don't know what came over me. You're-you're right, I didn't cause her death, but I can't help but feel guilty."
"Chase, I know you hurt for her loss," Marshall said. "You are the most selfless person I know. You would have died if you could have done anything to save her."
"And I know you would have taken Rocky's place if there was a way," Chase responded.
"Boys, now that you're done beating the crap outta each other," Skye finally said standing up. "You two go clean yourselves up and and let's eat the breakfast I've prepared." Chase, Marshall and Rocky looked at each other, Chase began laughing followed by Marshall and Rocky. They pulled into a tight hug among the three. Marshall helped Chase to his feet and they turned to the crowd who all stood with the mouths hanging open.
"What you've never seen a heated discussion before?" smirked Marshall.
"Uh, whatever dudes" said Zuma.
"I'm just hungry," said Rubble. Everyone laughed and went in to eat breakfast.
After breakfast, Chase pulled Marshall aside. "I forgive you. I'm really sorry I blew up like I did."
"It's okay," replied Marshall. "I promise to be more careful from now on. But you have to admit, Rocky is a quick thinker. Most kids his age would have panicked and froze. Maybe you should teach him to drive. I know he's too young to have a license, but we learned about his age."
Chase laughed, scratching the back of his head. "Yeah, I guess you might be right."
"Thanks Chase," said Marshall "I'd really understand if you and Skye didn't forgive me."
Chase hugged Marshall once more. "We're family. I love you, bro."
Marshall hugged him back. "I love you too, bro." They held the moment a few more seconds, until they heard the snap of a camera shutter. They turned to see Rocky holding up his iPad.
"Perfect," he giggled before running off.
Chase and Marshall smirked before chasing after him. "Rocky!" Laughter could be heard throughout the cabin as the day went on.
