Chapter Sixteen

That night, Rocky sat in front of the fire. They had about two days left before they would go home. Back to school and work. Back to normal. Though, he couldn't help but think back to earlier in the day, when he nearly fell off the cliff. He couldn't shake the falling sensation.

Chase felt the same. Watching Rocky nearly disappear forever, his heart had dropped. Holding his son, knowing he had saved his life, he never wanted to let go. He still had yet to tell Skye, though he didn't want to. He hated keeping the truth from her, but he hadn't lied either. He simply said that Rocky had fallen, which was true.

Rocky turned his head and saw his parents sitting on the couch, watching TV. Everest had fallen asleep on Marshall's shoulder. Zuma was in the pool room swimming laps and Rubble could be heard in the kitchen. Rocky got up and walked over to the couch, sitting between his parents. "I love you guys," he whispered.

Skye looked up to Chase, wondering what was wrong. He only shrugged and smiled. "We love you too, buddy." They pulled and held him close for a few seconds before letting go. "Tired?"

"Not really." Rocky paused for a moment. "Dad? I- I want to try swimming again..."

"Are you sure?" Rocky nodded. "Well, alright. Go get your shorts and meet me in the pool room. Zuma's already there." Rocky got up and went towards his room.

"Honey, do you think he can do it?" Skye asked. "He's so afraid."

"He can conquer this fear, I know he can." He kissed her forehead. "And don't worry, I'll be there."

Marshall watched as he too got up and left. Skye glanced over at him and Everest and he blushed. "So, is it official?" she asked.

"I guess so," Marshall said. He held Everest a bit tighter. "She just makes me so happy, I wish she didn't have to go."

"You'll work it out, I know you will." She stood up and grabbed his empty cup. "Refill?" Marshall nodded his thanks and turned his attention back to the TV.

Rocky stood at the edge of the pool. Zuma had not come up for quite some time. He could see him swimming laps underwater gracefully, never coming up for air. "Wish I could do that..."

"You can," Chase said, startling him. "With a lot of practice, you could swim as well as Zuma. I know you can. Come on, we'll start in the shallow end." Rocky followed him over. Chase walked down the steps while Rocky stood at the top. "The first step is to actually get in."

Rocky let his feet touch the water and shivered slightly. He took a deep breath and continued until the water was at his waist. He gasped and reached out towards Chase. Chase came forward and grabbed him, keeping him upright.

"You can stand, it's only three feet." Chase waited until Rocky was standing on his own. "Good job, Rocky!"

"I-I remember when I was little... My dad taught me how to swim."

"Do you remember?"

"I remember he used to hold me when I would lie on my back."

"You wanna try floating?" Rocky nodded. "Do you feel ready for that?"

"I-I think so... As long as I don't go under."

"I won't let that happen." Chase held onto his son as Rocky leaned backward, slightly shaking. "To float, you've gotta relax, buddy, otherwise it won't work." Rocky sighed as he tried to relax. Images of air bubbles and him struggling flooded his mind.

"D-D-Dad?" Rocky looked at him desperately.

"You're okay, Rocky. I won't let you go." Rocky felt his legs rise and soon, he was floating. Water filled his ears and he couldn't hear much, but Chase was smiling down at him. Rocky smiled too, finally able to relax. He felt the water move around him, soothing him. He shut his eyes and moved his arms slightly.

Rocky was swimming on his own, although he didn't realize it. Chase debated whether or not he should let him go. He didn't want to betray his trust. He gently squeezed Rocky's arm. Rocky opened his eyes and smiled. "You can let go," he said. "I trust you." Chase smiled and let him go. Rocky floated by himself in the middle of the pool.

Zuma resurfaced on the deep end and saw Chase and Rocky. He smirked and dove back underwater. Chase was unaware that his friend stood directly behind him. Zuma attacked, laughing and pulling him under. Chase laughed as he was pulled under, leaving ROcky unattended. The two fought playfully underwater.

Rocky opened his eyes and lifted his head. "Dad?" he called out. When there was no answer, he tried to stand up. He couldn't feel the ground. Whether it was instinct or memory, Rocky began moving his arms and legs around, turning, looking for Chase or Zuma. "Dad? Where'd you go?"

Chase resurfaced, holding Zuma in a choke hold. "That'll teach ya!" he laughed.

"I give! I give!" Zuma yelled. Chase let him go. Zuma punched his shoulder before looking over at Rocky. "Oh my God!" he yelled.

Chase looked over. "Rocky!" he screamed, swimming over. "Rocky, I'm so sorry, are you-" He stopped himself. "You're swimming."

Rocky looked down, then back up. "I'm swimming! I'm doing it!" He sank a bit and whimpered, only to have Chase hold him up.

"You have to keep swimming if you want to stay up. Try getting to the wall." Rocky nodded and turned around. Zuma snickered as he realized how Rocky was swimming. It was a doggy paddle. Chase shot him a look which made him stop almost immediately. "You're almost there, Rocky. You've got this!" Rocky hit the wall and pulled himself up.

"Swimming... is awesome!" he said.

The next day was filled with more adventure for the group. Chase drove them out for some indoor rock climbing. Marshall tried to get out of it, but Everest managed to force him to come. Rocky was incredibly excited. He loved to climb. As soon as his harness was on, he ran to the nearest rock wall. "Wait up, Rocky!" Skye said, walking towards him. "You need a spotter."

Chase watched as Marshall struggled to even get a foot off the ground. "You're kidding me... You're telling me you're still afraid of heights? How on earth do you fight fires?"

"That's different!" Marshall retorted. "When I'm on a mission, I'm focused on saving lives, not potentially falling to my death."

"Honey, this is perfectly safe," Everest said. "You've got a harness and me, your spotter." She pulled him close. "You'll be fine."

"Fine," Marshall grumbled. Everest grabbed his hand and pulled him over to one of the easier walls. A buzzer sounded from above. Rocky had reached the top and was repelling down.

"Great job, Rocky!" Chase yelled. He picked one of the more difficult walls to climb. This had an auto belay system, which meant he didn't need a spotter. Rubble stood next to him and smirked. "What?" Chase asked.

"I'll bet you 20 bucks I can beat you to the top." Chase smiled. Rubble weighed at least twice as much as he, thanks to all his muscle.

"You're on!" Chase said.

Zuma chuckled and gave them a countdown. "Three... two... one... go!" They were off, Chase quickly taking the lead. Rubble wasn't far behind, his arms rippling as he followed. Rocky looked over and cheered his Dad on.

As they neared the halfway point, Chase felt his harness loosen up. He looked up and saw the ropes had come undone. HIs eyes widened in fear.

Rubble too paused. "Tired already?" he panted. He looked up as well. "Oh God..." Twenty feet in the air with no safety. "Chase, hold on!" Rubble started climbing over.

"It's going to be too much weight," Chase said. His arms buckled as he looked down. "I can climb..." He slowly began descending the wall, Rubble next to him in case he slipped.

The employees stood nearby, ready to act in case he fell. Five feet from the ground, he jumped, rolling as he hit the ground. "Sir, we are so sorry," the manager said. "We'd like to offer you a free season pass as reimbursement."

"Oh, that's great!" Chase rolled his eyes. "I could've died and you offer free climbing. I guess that's fair." Skye grabbed his arm and gave him a look. "Sorry..."

"Sir, when are your safety checks?" Rubble asked.

"For our auto belay systems, it's weekly."

"Make it daily," Chase ordered. "If that happened to my son or anyone's kid, you'd be sued to the roof. You're lucky."

Rocky had climbed down. He didn't see what happened, though it was evident tensions were high. Deciding to cool things down, he walked over to Chase. "Dad, come climb with me?"

Chase scowled at the manager, then smiled. "Sure, Rocky." He followed his son away from the closed wall. Rocky started climbing a lower wall with a steeper hang. Chase aided him in his climb, pointing out the easier rocks to climb to. Rocky slipped and would've hit the mats, but landed on Chase instead. The two laughed loudly.

Meanwhile, Everest watched as Marshall neared the top. "You're almost there, sweetie!" Marshall's foot slipped, but he regained his composure, slamming a hand on the buzzer. He had completed his first climb in a long time. He grinned and looked down, regretting it almost instantly. He felt dizzy and suddenly let go of the wall. He fell a few feet before Everest managed to grab the line. "Marshall?!"

Everest slowly let him down. His legs wobbled and gave out once he reached the ground. "I-I shouldn't have looked down," he chuckled nervously.

Zuma handed him a water bottle. "You okay, dude?"

"I'm fine," he said. "Just need a minute." Everyone chuckled and went back to what they were doing.

~~~
After rock climbing, they went out for lunch. It was a cozy little diner they had gone to as kids. The owners recognized them immediately, leading them to their usual table. "Who's this cutie?" Ruby, wife of Frank, said.
Rocky blushed as Chase and Skye introduced him. "He's our son," Chase said proudly.
"How old are ya, kid?" Frank asked.
"Twelve, sir." Rocky looked down, feeling unusually shy.
"Ya look younger," Frank said. "But if yer stickin' with twelve, that's fine by me."
Chase chuckled. "We used to fake our ages when we were younger."
"Chase," Skye scolded.
"Why would you do that?" Rocky asked.
"To pay less," Ruby said. "Parents do it all the time with their kids. Twelve and under get all you can eat for free."
Rocky's eyes lit up as he glanced over the menu. "Hey kid," Rubble whispered. "Mind sharing some of that all you can eat with me?" Rocky laughed.
They all ordered their food. Rocky had never had fish before and thought this would be the perfect time. "You mean you've never had fish sticks?" Chase asked him.
"No. My Mom always gave us takeout."
"Wait a minute," Marshall said. "Then how'd you stay so fit?"
Rocky smiled. "Running. I love it."
"Same here," Marshall said. "We should go sometime."
Rocky bit into a piece of crab. He grinned and dug in. "Is it that good?" Rubble asked. "Haven't had it in so long." Rocky nodded. His face paled and he began coughing. Rubble pat his back and handed him a glass of water. Rocky grabbed at his throat.
"Rocky?" Skye stood up and walked over. "Rocky, what's wrong?"
"He's choking," Marshall said. He opened Rocky's mouth. "His throat's closing, we've gotta get him to the hospital, now!" He picked Rocky up and rushed to the door. Chase was already ahead of them, jumping in the van and turning it on.
"Is he gonna be okay?" Zuma asked.
"I don't know," Rubble said. "We'll take a cab. Go, Skye." Skye nodded, tears streaming down her face as she ran. Everest stayed with Zuma and Rubble.
~~~

Chase drove down the road as fast as possible, sweat dripping down his face. He tried to concentrate on the road ahead, not on the sounds of his choking son. "Marshall, how much further?"

"Next corner, right." Chase turned the wheel sharply, pulling into the emergency section of the hospital. Nurses ran out, having already received the message. Marshall handed him over and watched as Chase tried to run in. Marshall grabbed him, holding him back.

"Let me go!" Chase yelled, pushing and shoving against his best friend. "That's my son!"

"I'm sorry, we have to wait for the results," Marshall said. Chase continued trying to shove his way past, but Marshall stood his ground. Marshall looked him in the eyes. "I'm sorry." Chase finally gave up, breaking down in his arms. Skye came forward and hugged her husband. They all went inside to wait inside the waiting room.

Meanwhile, the doctors worked on Rocky. "Airways closing up. Son, I need you to stay calm and open your mouth. Rocky struggled to do as he was told. His eyes began closing. "Rocky, stay with me now. Rocky! Alright, he's going into anaphylactic shock. We've dealt with this before, let's save him."

~~~
Chase and Skye had fallen asleep in each other's arms while waiting. The others arrived just a few minutes before, waiting patiently. Marshall paced back and forth in front of a double set of doors they weren't allowed through. The doctors still hadn't come back and it was worrying him. Chase and Skye already lost one baby, they couldn't lose another. There was no telling how they'd react.
Zuma walked up to him. "Did he know he was allergic?"
"No, none of us knew. But he should've been tested when he was younger." Marshall shook a finger. "I bet his parents never even told him, but they knew."
"It's a miracle he never ate fish at school," Zuma said.
"It was only a matter of time before this happened." Marshall sighed. "I just hope we got here in time."
The doors opened and a single doctor walked out, holding a clipboard. "Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd?" he called out. Rubble, Everest, Marshall and Zuma all stood and walked over. The doctor looked confused for a second.
"They're asleep," Marshall said. He pointed over to Chase and Skye.
The doctor nodded his thanks and walked over. He sat across from them and cleared his throat. "Excuse me, Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd?" They were startled awake, but slowly sat up. They looked at the doctor with concern. "I have some news..."
