-Chapter Eleven-
It's been two days since the meeting with Alpha Trevor, and things have lapsed back into their normal routine. Almost normal anyway.
For the last two days I've been training with the warriors more, frankly because Seth had to go to the neighboring pack for business. So, I've been splitting my time between training and paperwork, much to Adrienne's dismay.
Avery, in response to missing me because of my lack of visits, came to see me at the packhouse. We went to the office and I showed her the large fish tank full of jellyfish, the translucent creatures both beautiful and deadly.
After it was time for her to go back, I got a mind link from Gamma Marcus. He asked if I wanted to join on a patrol run around the territory line, and I said yes. Which is currently where I am now, running in wolf form with the Warriors. Our shift is almost over, and a new one will be coming in shortly, so I duck behind a tree and pull on one of Seth's shirts and a pair of his boxers. I am not wearing jeans without underwear, period.
With the others wearing basketball shorts, we wait quietly for the trade off, listening intently for any signs of wolves. The sound of a branch snapping catches my attention, and I whip my head towards the sound, the others follow suit when they notice my stare.
Another snap, this time to the right of the first one. I lean forward slightly and sniff the air, and just as I'm about to brush it off, the faint scent of blood and rotting flesh hits my nose. I growl, hating the putrid smell.
"Rogues!"
I call out, and everyone tenses just before a large chorus of rabid growls cuts through the trees. Dozens of large, dark, hellish wolves leap out of no where. The red eyes an obvious sign.
There are two kinds of rogues: the unaffiliated, and the insane.
The unaffiliated look like normal pack wolves, but they just smell like a dog who hasn't had a bath in years.
The Insane are the equivalent of hellish beasts, their forms a twisted shadow of what they used to be. The stench of decaying flesh and rotten blood follows them around like a shadow, with their eyes glowing as red as the sustenance they crave. Blood. Werewolf blood. The insane are cannibalistic creatures with no sympathy or remorse...and the reason why werewolves are painted in an evil light. Because they'll eat anything with a pulse...including humans.
The others along with Gamma Marcus shift back into their wolves, clothing shredding left and right as they run towards the rouges without hesitation. I throw off my own clothes before shifting as well, charging into the fray without a second thought, following my instincts.
I mind link the entire pack to be on guard before I lock onto the neck of the first rogue I come close to, sinking my teeth into its putrid flesh as we tussle and hit the ground rolling. I snap through it's throat and whip my head back and forth until it neck snaps, pushing its limp body to the ground as I get up to fight another.
I cut through three more, snapping their necks and dropping them to the ground. Their blood a foul taste on my tongue and staining my muzzle, I'll have to wash my mouth out after this is over, swallowing too much rogue blood can turn you psycho as well. Like a toxic high.
A sharp cry of pain pull me back into focus, and I turn to see one of the youngest warriors in trouble, a rogue on his side with its jaws clamped on his shoulder. I snarl and barrel into the disgusting creature, sending us rolling and snapping at each other in an attempt to find a kill spot. He blindly latches on to my front leg, his red eyes glowing brighter as he bites down and the bone cracks, making me cry out in pain.
I quickly grab its neck in my jaws, and whip it's head as hard as I can to the right. My anger putting in extra force, making it snap in half with one swing. After he drops, I carefully pull myself up off the ground, my right leg throbbing painfully. I don't think it's broken, but it's definitely fractured...and hurts like hell.
As I get up, what little remains of the attackers are running off through neutral land. All the warriors surround me worriedly as I limp towards them, and a shirtless Marcus runs up to me with a look of horror on his face.
"Luna, are you all right?" He asks, a bit of terror in his tone.
~I'm alright, just a fracture in my front leg. It'll be healed in a couple of hours.~
A younger wolf walks towards me, bowing his head in respect. I can tell he's the one I knocked the rogue off of.
~Thank you, Luna. I would be dead if it wasn't for you.~
~No need to thank me, I just did for you what any of you would have done for me.~
They all nod, and I go through the links of the pack to check for any signs of more rogues, relieved to find none.
"Come Luna, we should get you to the pack doctor. Just in case." Marcus encourages, holding up my clothes to take in my mouth. I won't be able to shift until I know for certain it isn't broken, doing so will make it worse and much more painful. So I begin limping back to the pack house to wait for the doc, Marcus staying by my side to assist with the walking, helping take some of the pressure off my leg.
~Contact the next patrol and tell them to be on high alert, add extra members to that patrol shift as well. We don't want to take any chances.~
A chorus of 'Yes Luna' is heard before I go back to walking, me and Marcus remain silent as we reach the pack house. He had already contacted the doc and she's waiting for us as we speak.
As we enter the pack house, the woman I can assume is the doctor rushes towards me with a bag in hand.
"Luna, I'm Dr. Raya, if you don't mind coming a little further inside, I'll get a look at that leg."
I nod and let Marcus help me, knowing he'll refuse to leave even though I can handle this myself. With Seth and Tyron gone, he sees it as his duty to look after me.
Sitting on my haunches, I raise up the injured leg so she can look at it. She runs her hands up the length and bends it ever so slightly, and I can't help the slight whine that escapes my muzzle when the pain flares up with a vengeance.
"The bad news is, it's actually broken. But the good news is that it's a clean break, the bone is only slightly misaligned, so it won't take too long to heal. Maybe 2-3 days at most."
I growl in response, the sound mixed with a huff. This means it has to be set, and that son of a bitch is painful. She grabs the leg and looks at me, and I nod.
"This is gonna hurt a bit." She warns just before deftly realigning the bone with a snap of her wrists. A string of curses come out as growls, this may not be my first broken bone but, it doesn't make it less painful. She pulls a needle out of her bag, and I know exactly what it is. The liquid inside is a combination of steroids and pain killers, the former quickly sets the bone enough to shift back while the latter makes the shifting less painful. Injecting it into my leg, she looks up and smiles at me.
"I take it you know that it will take 15 minutes for this to kick in, and you'll have to shift back slowly."
I nod, I've done this drill before.
"Katrina! Are you okay?!" Adrienne yells, running into the room at breakneck speed before sliding to a halt in front of me.
"She's alright, just a broken arm. It's already been set, now she just needs to wait to shift and have it bandaged."
Adrienne sighs and looks at me, a slightly scolding look on her face.
"And you say I'm the one who gets in too much trouble."
I roll my eyes and she chuckles, turning to Marcus she crosses her arms and gets that curious look in her eyes.
"I've been wondering Gamma Marcus, do you have a mate?"
Leave it to Adri to be nosy. He shakes his head, a longing look in his eyes.
"It seems that particular part of my life has not come yet, but I'm still holding out hope that my mate is out there somewhere."
I hope he does find them, whoever they are. He deserves to have that happiness, he's earned it.
After the time passed, and Marcus politely turned around. I shifted back and pulled the clothes from earlier back on, and Doc tightly bandaged my arm with thick tape and Ace wraps. Telling me not to shift or train for the next couple of days until she gave the go ahead. I was expecting that, so I'll have to do something else so I don't go stir crazy in this house.
I went upstairs and changed into my own clothes after taking a shower, careful not to get the bandage wet. I've spent the last two hours in the office doing a few documents, but the sound of hurried footsteps thumping in the hall catches my attention just before the door flies open. Standing in the doorway is my worried mate, out of breath and a little ragged.
"Se--"
I get cut off when he clears the office and pulls me into his arms, crushing me in a bear hug that thankfully my arm isn't caught in.
"Katrina, I heard what happened and I felt your pain! Are you alright?" He asks, fear leaking into his usual confident voice.
"I'm fine, love, I just hurt my arm. It's already healing."
He quickly, but carefully pulls my sore arm up for inspection, a scowl on his handsome face.
"It's broken, don't sugar coat it."
"I'm fine, it's not my first injury."
His scowl deepens.
"I'll make sure the warriors are pushed to their limits." His voice angry, I grab his arm.
"They aren't to blame for this, I was out there with them on patrol when the attack hit. It's just a part of being a warrior."
His eyes tighten, a fury in them I haven't seen before.
"I'll make sure they never drag you along for patrol again. It's no longer your duty."
"They didn't drag me anywhere, I volunteered to go." I reply, starting to get a little angry myself. What does he mean it isn't my duty? I'm a Luna, protecting the pack is my biggest job.
"Why? It's not your job to go on patrol, you are a Luna." He raises his voice in frustration, clearly not happy about me fighting him on this.
"And what am I supposed to do? Stay here and sit in a house? Run and hide when trouble shows up and let our pack fight in my place?"
"Yes, you are! And I'll make sure that every single wolf in this pack follows that order!"
I pull out of his arms and glare at him, my blood boiling through my veins. Ziva tries to tell me to calm down, but I have no intention of doing so.
"I refuse to stay in this house like a house pet!"
His eyes turn black at my words, and it's the first time that it wasn't from lust.
"You will not fight with the warriors like that again! That's an order!!"
The sound of his Alpha tone chills my blood, an all new form of rage burning in me. Ziva growls inside my head, furious at the sound of our mate trying to force us into complete and total submission.
~How dare he order us!!~
Before I can say a word he storms out, leaving me alone with the echo of his Alpha tone still ringing in my head.
I am not his subordinate! I am his equal! And he's going to learn that the hard way. Following his lead, I exit the office in a haste, going into our bedroom and slamming the door, locking it behind me. I pull out one of my old duffle bags and begin throwing any necessities I need into it. Clothes, bathroom supplies, shoes, some books and my iPod and charger.
I am not gonna stay in this house with him until he remembers exactly who I am.
Slinging the bag over my shoulder, I throw the door open and sprint down the stairs angrily, mind-linking Tiana. Just as I reach the bottom floor I see Seth staring at me, and I turn my back to him and head to the door.
"Where are you going!" He asks angrily, sending that chill of fury back through my blood. And I push even faster to get out the door.
"Leaving! I refuse to share a house with someone who treats their mate like an inferior!" I call back without stopping, ignoring his growls.
"No!!" He yells, grabbing the uninjured part of my right arm harshly. Out of both instinct and fury, I whip around and shove him off with my left arm, the force knocking him to the floor. I feel guilt as I glare at his shocked face, it warring with my anger.
"I am leaving! And I'm not stepping foot back in this house until you pull your head back out of your ass!"
I turn around and slam out the door, listening for a second before I take off running. Halfway to Tiana's I use the masking spray to cover my scent, knowing if I don't use it Seth will just follow me. I completely shut off the link with Seth, making sure he stays out of my head. No sooner than I did, his pained, angry howls echo through the night. But right now, I'm too angry to feel hurt by them...at least not enough to turn back around.
