Allegory: Symbolic device in which characters or events in a story represent or symbolize ideas or concepts. Many people believe that Aslan's death in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is an allegory for Christ's crucifixion in the Christian Bible.
Alliteration: Repetition of an initial consonant sound. This literary term is often used in poetry. "Shatter every window till it's all blown away, every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away"
Allusion: Figure of speech where the author refers to a subject matter such as a person, place, event, or literary work in a passing reference. "That you were Romeo, You were throwing pebbles, And my daddy said, Stay away from Juliet."
Anagram: An extremely popular form of literary device where wherein the writer jumbled up parts of the word to create a new word. It is a type of wordplay!
Analogy: Comparison between two things for the purpose of explanation or clarification. One of Obama's speeches compares the economic recession to a car driving into a ditch.
Antagonist: A character, or group of characters, or institution that opposes the protagonist or main character.
Anti-Hero: In literature, a central character who lacks conventional heroic qualities. They blur the lines between hero and villain. MOVIE: Shrek
((Heh... side note here. We all know that Shrek is a villain, if you know what I mean. -cough shrekisloveshrekislife cough-))
Anthropomorphism: Occurs when a human quality, emotion, or ambition is given to a non-human object or being. In Alice in Wonderland, there are numerous examples.
Antithesis: Used when the writer puts two sentences of contrasting meaning close to one another. "You're hot, then you're cold. You're yes, then you're no. You're in, and you're out. You're up, and you're down."
Apostrophe: Figure of speech in which the speaker addresses an object, concept, or person (often absent) that is unable to respond. Consider the film "I Am Legend". Will Smith, the last man on Earth, seeks comfort in attempting to speak to a mannequin.
Archetype: A concept, person, or object that has served as a universally understood prototype of its kind. Archetypes are immediately identifiable and can be overused.
Atmosphere: Created when the setting/scene creates an emotional response in the reader/viewer. "In the gloom of the courtyard looked of considerable size, and as several dark ways led from it under great round arches... I have not yet been able to see it by daylight."
