(August 2016)
--------------------------------------------

Y/n stared out of the window, smiling tiredly. There was no window in her bunk so she lay back on the couch in the rec room of the Hermes. The Stars were so beautiful, too beautiful for mere words.

Back on Earth, every night she would make a hot chocolate and sit on the roof of the red brick apartment building where she lived in Columbus. The light pollution obviously obscured her view but she could faintly see the constellations above her, dancing across space.

It made her feel so small and alone. The stars that she saw where already dead but out there more stars were being created. She could name all the constellations and individual stars, she knew their theoretical distance from Earth and the meaning behind their obscure names. Her knowledge of the stars helped her become one of NASA's best astronomers and then one of NASA's best astronauts.

"Did you know that the word Astronaut means Star Sailor?" Y/n said to the person that walked into the room.

She didn't look up to see who she had spoken to and continued to stare out into space. She could imagine Watney out there on the red planet staring up at the same stars as she could see. She missed her friend dearly. She missed his humour- and although she had Martinez and Beck- she missed him.

"No I did not, thank you for that piece of knowledge, Dr L/n". She could hear the smirk in the masculine voice. "What are you doing L/n?" He asked as he sat on the couch, near her head. Beck leaned over so his face was over Y/n's, like they were about to create that iconic moment from Spider-man.

"Just staring at the stars." She answered and smiled at the man.
"Well I was, but now my view has been blocked by a doctor with bad breath". Beck suddenly shot away and breathed into his hand, trying to assess how bad his breath was. "Just joking, you smell like mint." She chuckled and sat up to look at him. He scowled and pouted. "Why'd you do that?" He said 'sulkily'.

"I wanted you to get out of my view." He joined in the chuckling as well. They both went quiet and looked out of the large window. She liked the quiet that had fell upon the room, it was content and peaceful not awkward.

They remained like this before Beck gulped and asked, "what's your favourite star?" Y/n moved over to where he was now sitting and took his large hand in her's. She didn't realise how close their lips were until her heart started to thud like marching band drum.

Beck stared at her in confusion, curiosity and a little bit of excitement. She slowly placed his hand on the cold glass.

"Beta Ursae Minoris, also known as Kochab, in the Ursa Minor Constellation." She answered. She pulled her hand away from Beck's and placed it in her lap.

"Why?" He questioned again. Her eyes were burning into her lap but he noticed that an eyelash had landed just above her cheek. Without a second thought he held her face in his hand and swiped his thumb across her cheek to get rid of it. She looked up and locked eyes with his sparkling, cerulean ones. His eyelids, decorated with delicate long, dark eyelashes, closed before opening and resuming the stare.

Y/n took and deep breath and explained, not breaking the gaze.

"Kochab is the second brightest star in the Ursa Minor constellation, it's only slightly fainter than the Alpha- Polaris- also known the North Star. But everyone knows the Polaris, but no one talks about Kochab even though it's the brightest star in the Bowl of the Little Dipper. No one about it.

"I have a brother called Isaiah and he is amazing. He was always getting high grades, he was amazing in all sports and was the quarterback in his school football team. My parents adored him so much, and I did. He was the one that taught me to love the stars. But we always knew that my parents loved him more than me. For starters he was their first born, and their son. And he also didn't bring a same-sex date home one Christmas". She blushed a little.

"I wasn't as clever as Isaiah, I wasn't as athletic as him and I sure as hell wasn't as good looking as he was. I'm not saying I was terrible at everything, our score were almost the same, but his were always just that little bit higher.

"He works at Ohio State now doing something in sports, and he's got a kid and wife. Every Christmas when the whole family goes around to my parents, they bring out all of this trophies and awards and his diploma. But my PhD in Astronomy and NASA acceptance letter is only worthy of the back room.

"When we were younger we called each other Polaris and Kochab. He was Polaris because he was bigger than me, but as I got older I realised that he was always just that little bit brighter than me, just like Polaris and Kochab. Everyone's favourite is Polaris, but it was always my one hope that someone would think of Kochab as their favourite. And so it became mine."

Y/n didn't realise that tears were slowly dripping down her face. Beck felt entranced by the way her passionate eyes caught the light and the darkness. He felt the raw emotion as she spoke about her life before Ares, something she had never done before. His heart broke unexpectedly when he realised that she had never felt the admiration that she deserved from the people she loved the most.

Beck had always known that Y/n was beautiful. Watney and Martinez had made jokes about how he had a crush on her, but he knew that he didn't. Until now.

Her face was an artistic masterpiece, greater than anything MichaelAngelo, Da Vinci, Raphael or Sargent could even contemplate. Her mesmerising lips were so close to his, so close that he could feel her slow, shallow breath. A indescribable urge to kiss her surged through him, and with one hand on her cheek and the other gently placed on her waist, he leant forward.

He pulled away after a moment. Y/n sat stunned. She hadn't been able to kiss back, she had been too shocked to return the kiss that her heart so dearly desired.

"I'm so sorry Y/n. I don't know what came over me. I'm so sorry. Oh god I-" His ramblings were silenced by her loving lips on his. He immediately kissed back and sighed softly when she ran her hands through his hair and held onto his neck.

It wasn't a rushed and heated kiss that only fueled lust. This kiss was slow and mind consuming. It was the type of kiss that you wished would never end because in that brief moment you are flying in the clouds and dancing among the stars and planets.

They pulled away slowly so they could breathe a little. Their foreheads were pressed gently against each other's and their lips lightly brushed.

"Do you want to know my favourite star, y/n?"

Y/n blushed at how elegant her name sounded on his tongue. She nodded, "Yes, Chris"

He smiled and placed a slow peck on her lips.

"Kochab."
