It has been hours since we escaped from HYDRA. Bucky still doesn't remember much. He doesn't say a lot and he is as tense as a coil of wire. What should I expect? He has been used by HYDRA, frozen, tortured and mind wiped since 1945. I feel sleep start to wrap it's dreamful claws around my brain. I look at the digital clock on the dash board: 00:30. I have been driving for over 4 hours. We are no longer in Washington DC and we passed through Philadelphia a while ago. We must be nearing New York. I look over to see Bucky softly snoring away, murmuring random incoherent words of Russian every know and then.

Knowing that I am in no state to drive,
I pull in at the next Motel. It is a rather shabby place with an old flickering neon sign reading Mindy's Motel. I pull up and softly shake Bucky awake. "Bucky.....Bucky....wake up". He jolts away and seizes my throat with his metal made hand. I try to fight against him but his grip is like iron. His face is passive and empty of feeling. "Bucky!" I breath as the hold tightens. He suddenly snaps out of his trance and immediately let's go. I wheeze as the pressure is realised. "I'm so sorry Jude. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me, I never meant to hurt you", he begs guiltily. I nod. "We're here". I let out a breath as my heart rate falls to its normal pace. He nods shamefully. I try to rest my hand on his shoulder in reassurance but he pulls himself away. "Let's go". He mutters before opening his door and getting out without another word. I sigh and get out.

Bucky follows me as we make our way to the reception of Mindy's Motel. Before we enter the establishment I slip a cheap, silver ring onto my finger and place an identical ring in Bucky's palm. He seems to get the gist and slips it on. A metallic ding slices through the silent night air. A greasy haired woman behind the desk jolts awake at the sudden sound. "Hi I'm Ava and this is my husband James. Do you have any rooms available?" I say in my clearest Brooklyn accent I can muster. "Um yeah. We do. Can I have your last name?" "Ward. Ava and James Ward. Can we pay by cash?" The sleepy woman nods her head as she types in our 'names' onto an ancient PC. "$45 please. And it's room 5. Goodnight". She says as we make to exchange of dollars and keys. "Goodnight to you too". I say politely while Bucky manages a tight, forced smile. I take his hand and lead him towards our appointed accommodation.

I collapse on the bed in a heap as the door locks behind us. I roll over to leave Bucky some room. I hear him unzip his leather jacket and unbuckle his boots before pulling off my sneakers and placing them next to his own. The bed groans in protest as he lies down beside me. He lies as stiff as a  board until I accidentally roll into his side. "Sorry". I slur in my sleepy state. He doesn't reply he just wraps his flesh arm around my waist and pulls me in closer to him, so that my face is burrowed into his defined, muscular chest. "Aren't you moving a bit forward Barnes? Do you usually sleep with a woman that you have just met that day?" I mumble, almost silenced by his shirt. "We'll you were the one that made us husband and wife. I think that you may be the forward one here Lake". He chuckles softly, making his chest deeply vibrate. "Touché, Barnes. Touché". I whisper before nuzzling my way closer to him and falling asleep in his homely arms.

"Please don't do this! I made her HYDRA! She is! She doesn't need to be wiped!" Grant yells. "Grant what's happening?" I ask confused. "She will remember who she was but she will be easier to program." A man in a lab coat tells him. "So she'll remember who she was?" He says quieter than before. "Yes agent Ward. She will remember most things apart from the wiping and her brain will be opened to our commands." The doctor guy reassures. "Is she your weakness Ward?" A man with weird teeth says as he enters the rooms. He reminds me of a shark circling his prey. And I am the prey.

I look around the bare cold room to see a selection of HYDRA's finest. Even Pierce is here. I'm sitting in on a cold bed made of metal and leather. A metal contraption behind me, connected to wires that lead to a switch board.

"No Garret, She's just a very good agent and it would be a waste if her talents and abilities were forgotten". He states coldly. "Well then there is no problem of that. As the doc said, she will remember everything." Garret's voice is dangerous. "Grant? What are they going on about? What's going to happen to me? Grant answer me!" I shout as he walks away. "It will be okay Ava. It will all be okay soon. Remember that. See you soon Lake". His voice echoes as he disappears from view.

Without warning, I am shoved back into the chair and a rubber and metal mouth guard is placed in my mouth. I try to spit it out but I can't. I scream and fight as I hear the whirling of electricity running through metal. The team of agents whom I thought that I could trust, hold me down as the metal plates enclose on my scalp. "It will be okay, Agent Lake. Or should I say, Shadow?"

I am able to suck in a shallow breath of panic before the electricity hits my skull and my screams of anger and confusion morph into screams of agony and pure terror.

"Jude wake up. Listen to my voice! Jude! Ava Jude Lake, wake up!" I am awoken from my nightmare by Bucky shaking my shoulders vigorously. I am lay tangled in the musty cream sheets of the bed, drenched in my own sweat and tears of terror. Leaning over me is Bucky's lean figure, worry yet understanding etched across his handsome features. "They.....they...they.." "They wiped you too?" Bucky finished. I nod letting it sink in. "My best friend walked away as they tortured me into doing what they wanted". I whisper to myself. Bucky sits up and watches me fearfully. "Bucky I'm sorry. They did what they did to me on you and I stood by and let it happen. I could of-" "you couldn't of done anything. You would have been shot and then no one would have rescued me and I'd still be on missions, being wiped, being frozen over and over. You saved me. You don't have to apologise." He leans a bit closer. "But Bucky-" "but nothing. If you go to say sorry again, I'm gonna have to shut you up". "I'm sor-"

I'm cut off by Bucky's chapped lips pressing onto mine, silencing them. I pull myself onto his lap and kiss back eagerly. I run my hands through his lush, mahogany hair as he runs his though my auburn strands. His metal arm grips at my waist forcefully but not painfully.

As we break away for a breath I whisper, "do you do this to every girl you've just met?" He smirks before answering, "only the ones that save me". He cups my chin and brings our lips back together.

Bucky and I have been moving around everyday. Motel to motel. Car park to car park. Bed to bed.

We are now staying just north of New York City. I'm not exactly sure where we are to be honest. We prefer to stay in New York as there are more people, and it's easier to blend in when you look like 8 million other people.

I'm walking through the busy streets of the big apple by myself as Buck is out buying supplies somewhere. I keep my head down and try not to draw attention to myself as I pass Stark, I mean Avengers Tower. As I pass the humongous steel and glass structure, a blonde and a black man walk out together. They stand there a few moments before walking down the road, both sets of eyes locked with mine. I know that they want me. I harshly take a left turn into a alley, heroin needles scattered across the badly tarmac floor. I hear the men's footsteps increase in tempo, so mine do as well but before I can make it out of the alley, I am held up the crumbling brick, graffiti covered wall. I try to escape but the men's grips are as hard as steel.

"Let me go!" My scream comes out as nothing louder than a murmur when the black man puts his hand over my mouth. "Listen Shadow, where is the Winter Soldier?" The blonde man hisses. I shake my head, I'm never going to give up Bucky. "Oi HYDRA scum, he ask you a question: where is the Winter Soldier?" The black man shouts down my ear making me harshly cringe away. Their faces blur as my eyes fill with tears and my cheeks become wet as they fall. "Dude why is she cryin'? I thought you said that the Shadow was a emotionless robot. Why is she crying". The Harlem accented man said. The blonde looks at me oddly. "Where is the Winter Soldier?"
"I would rather die then let you find Bucky." I spit. They look at me confused. "Wait. You're protecting Bucky?" They both ask simultaneously. I nod. They both let out a sigh of relief and take their hands off me. "Captain Steve Rogers, everyone calls me Steve." He out stretches his huge hand. "Agent Ava Jude Lake, most call me Jude." I tentatively shake it. "Officer Sam Wilson". The other says. I nod in recognition. "We're trying to find Bucky. He's my best friend, please tell him where he is". Steve pleads desperately. "I don't know where he is at the moment. I last saw him earlier. I can tell you where we're staying. But he won't be back till late". I answer. "Oh okay. If you tell us where to meet you we can meet around midnight." Sam suggests. "We'll be at Tyker's Warehouse. Please don't bring anymore people. He's still not completely settled". I say sadly remembering his relapse last night which resulted in the plum like bruise that now decorates my abdomen. They nod. "See you then Ma'am." Steve says before turning away. Sam gives me a curt nod before following his friend. "Oh and Steve..." I call after them. "Yes?" "He remembers you." He gives me a sad smile and a glint of hope makes his gentle blue eyes sparkle. "Thank you". He chokes before walking out of the alley to Sam whom is waiting for him.

I make my way back to our most recent motel to find that Bucky is still out. I pass the receptionist on the walk to my room. "Mrs Ward?" The bleach blonde, spotty faced teen asks. "Yes?" I turn around to see that he is holding a fancy looking card. "A man delivered this. He said that it was important". He says as I take the car. "Thank you." I smile before continuing my journey to room 15. I shut the door behind me and sit at the edge of the bed. I open the envelope to see a luxurious congratulations card, inlaid with stones such as opal and Amber. I drop the card to the floor as I read the message:

Dear Shadow,
We know where you are. And we are coming to get you. However we have decided to be kind enough and give you a choice. Either you try and run with the asset and we capture you and mind wipe you both completely or yoi arrive at 6 Bingham Avenue at 7:30 and we will allow Winter to make it to summer.
So it's your choice.
I hope to see you soon Shadow.
Hail HYDRA.

I don't have a choice. Either way I'm going to get caught, but at least Bucky will have a chance. I wipe tears that have broken their boundaries and have settled on my cheeks as I think of how I won't see Bucky again. In the short time that we have spent together, I have a better connection with him than myself and Grant ever did, and I had been friends with him for years. I pick up a curtesy pen and scrawl untidily on a nearby piece of paper, conscious of the harsh, unfeeling ticking of the clock.

Dearest Barnes,
I've gone to save our asses. Mostly yours. I mean it is a spectacle to behold.
I'm running out of time so I have a certain set of instructions that you MUST FOLLOW. If you don't, this will have all have been for nothing. And I won't be happy with that.
At midnight you must be at Tyker's Warehouse. I met your old friend Steve, he is looking for you. He will probably be with a man named Sam Wilson. Please go with them. Be the man that you are meant to be. Be James Buchanan Barnes. Be Bucky. Leave Winter behind. I wish that I could be Ava Jude Lake with you, but I will always have the Shadow looming behind me.
I have to say one last thing, one thing that I have always thought but have never had the courage to say. I guess that I do now.
I love you. I love you Mr Barnes. And I guess that love does weird things to people.
Люблю тебя всегда .
Love you always.
Jude. Xxxx

A tear staines the paper and I place it on the bed. However before I leave, I place on of Bucky's dog tags around my neck. He gave it to me a while ago but I haven't really worn it. I will never take it off now, not if I can help it.

It will be the last thing that I have of Bucky. The last thing I will have of the life that I wanted, the life that was almost in my grasp but was stolen from me as I went to hold it tight. Stolen by HYDRA.

I hope that it won't hurt. I hope that they won't prolong the pain. Maybe they might just kill me. I'd like that. No pain. I would wait for Bucky. I would watch over him for all the years that he has left to live.

I will always protect Bucky. Not even death can get in the way of that. HYDRA has no chance.
